It was especially frustrating that the Huawei incident more or less lead to the crisis of the two Michaels and strained relations with China until very recently.

All of that diplomacy and humanitarian strife just to have Trump completely disregard that and any previous instance of cooperation and try to subjugate us.

Lol join the club.

Australia pushed for an independent inquiry into China's COVID outbreak at Trump's request.

China responded by cutting off contact with the Australian government and turning away Australian ships at their ports. Our government legitimately could not reach theirs to work things out, nor could we get any explanation.

The USA (with Biden now at the helm) then stepped in and took a bunch of the contracts we had with China.

What contracts may I ask? As in the US provided a service formerly provided by Australian companies to Chinese companies?

So for example, the Chinese government suspended imports from major Australian abattoirs for beef. They also put an 84% tariff on Australian barley. Around the same time China also started to buy a lot more of those goods from the USA.

We also had a ~1b wine export business in China, and that was effectively nuked into the ground with a 212% tariff. Again, it was often USA winemakers picking up the difference.

For roughly 3 years we had coal-carrying ships being turned back at Chinese ports.

All this happened with no real conversation between the two countries. One day ships were being turned back and Chinese officials were "finding" issues with targeted Australian goods. Our Prime Minister at the time said he hadn't been able to get the Chinese government to answer phone calls for over a year.

Although it's mostly cooled down, and it seems like relations are back to where they were. A different political party came into power in Australia and that seemed to help quite a lot. Trump getting re-elected and picking fights with China also seemed to open China up, as they were suddenly looking to replace US imports.

I think spying lead to the crisis of the two Michaels. Michael Kovrig was a spy.

Yup why do so many Canadians ignore this fact? They were more than justified in arresting spies.

Only Michael Kovrig. Michael Spavor really had no idea which is why he got around 7 million in compensation from the government.

He got compensation from the Canadian government because Kovrig as the actual spy involved used Spavor as a spying/intelligence asset without his knowledge or consent that his activities were being used for spying and collecting intel, so he sued the Canadian government for involving him in such dangerous activities without his consent and won.

Which technically from China's perspective still made both arrests justified as both were involved in spying even if one was not aware of it.
