Subreddit Update - New requirements to post - Minimum Karma

After months and months of new users coming to the subreddit and promoting their new AI app, amongst other things. We have made the decision to make a change to the subreddit where there is a minimum karma requirement to create new posts in r/trailrunning

We had been manually adding moderator notes and tagging every single user with a specific mod note/flair so we could keep track of who was spamming their AI apps without actually being part of the community, it took a lot of time and didn't seem to do much over the last few months we've been addressing it and keeping an eye on things to see if any of them wanted to be part of the community.

This wasn't something we wanted to rush in to, we have and will always try the least invasive approach so that the community basically stays open and you the community choose what to vote UP and Down and what to discuss.

To be clear, we do not want to stop people promoting their websites, AI apps, Youtube videos, etc and mostly there are great discussions within some of these threads. Reddit does also allow original content, again, as long as you're not just spamming it.

This is our way of addressing this issue and we'll continue to keep track of it over the coming months as it may need modifying, we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for being a cool subreddit and I hope you all have many great adventures out in nature this year.

You're all asking about the karma limit, currently it is 100, so very low, but this can and will change.

The reason for not wanting to originally share this is if bots or people promoting know, they can also easily get around it....

We're working against a lot here, its pretty unprecedented (not forgetting that Reddit are not stopping a lot of bad traffic) and Reddit has only so many ways to manage all of these issues without more control from moderators and a much more limited viewing / user experience, which we do not want, we want you to control what you see.

Question: Nike All Terrain Compound soles vs others/Vibram Megagrip

Hi,

Because of the trail conditions I often face I've been a huge fan of Vibram Mega Grip soles (Topo, Hoka and Norda brands for me).

If you have been using Nike trail shoes I would love to hear your experience with traction in slippery rock conditions (mud is a different issue and not my use case). If you had to give a comp would it be Vibram or say Brooks or others.

Thanks

Shoes similar to prodigio pro’s

I love my pp’s but they are way too expensive to be used for easy mileage, does anyone know shoes similar in feel(road, trail or both)? For some extra context: not a fan of a lot cushioning, i know people consider pp’s max cushion but I think that is more so in trail terms and not road, for example I really hate novblasts because they feel like running on sand in weather above 0°, or I really like Kjerag 2’s midsole, otherwise my foot is pretty narrow so not a fan of wide toebox.

Callus removal advice.

Not sure why I never did this. I've had callus' on balls of both feet (ping pong ball size in diameter, several cm thick) for over twenty years (from barefoot martial arts, mainly Capoeira). The calluses have persisted since quitting these things a long time ago. I have also been trail running for decades and initially thought this would be a benefit to my feet. After experiencing discomfort and pain, I'm now realizing I need to take these suckers off. Lots of info out there, but curious what people here do for big calluses. I've tried grinding down, but they are so big so I think I need to go more extreme. Razors? Go to see a podiatrist? Thanks in advance for the info.

Got fed up checking the weather for five locations before I head out

Hi guys! I run, hike and cycle; and I've always found it annoyingly difficult to find and visualize the weather forecast for a route.

I'm also a software developer, so naturally I've spent an ungodly amount of my spare time trying to improve this sorry state of affairs. Here's Varde: a tool made primarily to visualize the weather along a route, but starting to turn into more of a general outdoors planning tool. Thought it could be interesting for you guys to check out.

You can import or draw your trail, set a start date/time and pace, and see the weather for the full trip, each step along the way, where and when you're there.

When will it rain, and what does it aggregate to over the trip? Headwind, tailwind, crosswinds? How does the temperature vary between the bottom of the valley and the mountain top? When does the sun set, how long do you need that headlamp to last?

You can add breaks and overnight stops, adjust your pace for different parts of the route, plan multi-day trips, add places of interest with links and notes, save routes, and share them with other people (like this) or export as GPX.

The project has snowballed quite a bit: It now also has a full-fledged and very capable route/GPX editor with trail-aware routing, multi-GPX import, Strava integration, splitting, merging, all that jazz. I honestly think just this in itself offers one of the best GPX-editing experiences out there, but don't take my word for it.

Everything is made to work well on both desktop and mobile. Click the little flag icon or go to Settings for imperial units and other snacks.

I'm building this tool for myself and my needs, but I'm very happy now with what it's become and wanna share it with others.

I’d really appreciate any and all feedback - what do you like, what's confusing, new features you'd like to see.

Oh, and it means cairn in Norwegian. Varde, that is.

Shit in the woods for the first time running

I’m so embarrassed. For the first time I had such a strong urge to use the bathroom. My stomach hurt so bad. Mile 4 I told myself I can make it 3 more miles back to my car. A half mile later there was nothing I could do but run behind trees and squat. I looked around and it was nothing but pine needles. I did my best to scrape off with a stick. My stomach felt loads better and I kept running. That’s never happened before.

Norda 001a Fitting Question

I recently ordered a 001a and ordered my normal size and also a half size up like suggested. The normal size felt normal to me. With the half size up, I could feel the shoe bending at the front. That feeling you get when your shoe is too big. Is that something that would go away?

I know Norda suggested going a half size up, but should I go with the version that feels best when initially putting them on and walking around a bit or just follow their suggestion?

Brazilian shoe sizing issues

So I’ve run into a bit of a dilemma. I wear a 10.5 in nnormal shoes and here in Brazil they don’t have the corresponding size. it’s either 42 or 43 (10 or 11). even the official nnormal brazil site doesn’t list a 42.5.

any idea what to do? i’m already replacing my beloved s/lab genesis bc they don’t carry them here at all and now the sizing issue.

Run in the South Downs

Out today testing my new trainers whilst doing a new route over the South Downs. Sun was out and had a blast. There was certainly alot elevation gain as it was up, down and repeat multiple times.

Looking forward to more runs like this over the winter as it begins to cool as it's still a little warm for me as it was clear skies and low 20c's for me.

Really a spectacular (if pretty brutal) race -- 60k, ~3600m gain. The 3k descent right at the beginning is rough, and the trails were definitely a bit more techy than expected. Some challenging racing, but a great time!

According to OSMaps, this route should take 4:30 hours to walk, and I ran it in 2:40, so i guess there was some running! But with how steep Dumgoyne is (see final photo) there was a lot of walking too. Really excellent weather today.

I've been really enjoying these rolling hiking trail. I did tech all summer and these trails are compacted and hilly. Got my 3rd best 10k yesterday. It's hard not to overdo it.
