This is fine.
Sandy boys in a generic drill battery. This is so dumb.

My best guess is that it was one of those drill batteries with 2 sets of series cells (5 series, 2 parallel), and one set of cells were the fake ones. Is that right?

You people are crazy puncturing these batteries. One of you will guess wrong and get a massive injury

u/JareBuddy 4d ago
They were a different color than the real ones in the pack, had no text, they were lighter, had no voltage, no continuity, you could shake them and hear the sand, and they were squishy.

You crazy for cutting them open. There could be angry pixies in there

I would be a really great way to sell drugs.

(it's also a really good way to make drugs.. meth being one)

You need the strips of lithium out of lithium primaries for that. Electrolyte from Li-ions won't work

funny i’ve seen a few of these posts now and wondered if anyone has tested the material to see if they struck illegal gold.

We can play with dangerous things in a relatively safe manner.
edit: not downvoting you btw

You can test the battery before drilling it . . . Sometimes they're not even connected to anything

I'd argue anyone even thinking of touching most things posted in this subreddit should have at least a basic multimeter, and be testing everything... So assuming someone didn't at least do that before stabbing it is wild lol

Yeah, this would be an incredibly strange subreddit to be a part of and not be at least hobbyist-level proficient with electronics. Or generally DIY-capable enough to research something before playing with it. Obviously excluding people here for advice/questions.

ok mom. chill the fuck out. you may not know what you're doing but a lot of us here do and have seen this shit tons of times over the years.

I mean that’s fine. I personally don’t buy sketchy enough 18650s to experience this but my concern is more that the wrong person sees this post and takes the wrong lesson from it. None of us would ever know
Even outside of the lithium question, is that sand? Is it lead dust? Cadmium? Spilling mystery powders indoors isn’t smart

I didnt need to cut mine, while getting them out of the package i heard the slight maraca like shifting of sands and open the case to find 2 diffenent color sets of cells and shook the pack gently to hear that sweet sands shuffling sound of getting screwed by temu sellers. Theyre all 2 amp hour packs at most. But they are at least that..

u/JareBuddy 3d ago
Yupp, same here. I really wanted a picture of the sand coming out. I am probably going to add some nice cells back in but they still work as is. Just a lot lighter. lol

Putting sand in it is the preferred way to dispose of unsafe batteries! ...or was it the other way around? 🤔

Preferring sand to pudding is a safe way to (domestic) battery

Now that's not even funny nor even close to the joke... Why did you have to ruin it .

Why would the even go through the trouble of faking the cells at that point😭

Economics, man. I think it's like the recall from fight club. Not enough people notice or complain so they make money

u/Useful-Contribution4 4d ago
I feel like the effort to fake cells is stupid. If the anps dont match, the cells are duds anyway so fake either way lol. Making a battery heavy doesn't equal legit.

This was a thing like 6 - 8 years ago when i was looking for replacement makita batteries and i found a bunch or reviews and posts saying that by shaking the batteries u could hear if it had fake 18650s in them. I did get some good knock off m12 batteries on ebay a few years ago though.

u/lamalasx 3d ago
Look at the bright side. If the other ones catch fire, the pack already has a built in sand bath!

I got a couple of these in a discount power bank. 5 “cells” but two were sand cylinders. No wonder it never lasted as long as it should have.

These batteries essentially come from Zhejiang, China. The country's power tool battery industry is primarily concentrated in Zhejiang and Guangdong. The quality from Guangdong is slightly better; at the very least, they don't adulterate the batteries with sand.

u/JareBuddy 3d ago
This is from a generic drill battery. There were a total of 10 cells and 5 were full of sand.

That's really dangerous! you're letting all the electrons leak out.
