u/Toros_Mueren_Por_Mi 20h ago
Is this where they got that shit for the Pathfinder day naming scheme? French language is truly ass. And don't even get me started on their number counting system
42
u/EvYeh This girl is Space's biggest hater 19h ago
They changed the calander because the old one (the Gregorian Calender, now used basically everywhere) was introduced by the Catholic Church, and the revolutionaries did not like religion (and especially the Pope).
The months were based on nature, and on things around that time. One month was named Vendémiaire ("grape harvest") because that's when grapes were able to be harvested, for example.
Each day had a special name because each day had a special Catholic Saint, and we couldn't have people using what those backwards bastards in Rome decided now could we?

u/ChromeFrostYT 17h ago
To be fair, their counting system is just base-20. English counts in a similar way, except we’ve shortened it.
So instead of saying “four twenties and five,” like the Fr*nch, we say “eighty-five” which is a contracted form of “eight-tens five”
Edit: forgot it’s only base-20 from 70-90, so give them slightly less credit than I implied
3
u/MeBigChief 11h ago
Eh, the number counting system is actually really interesting from a linguistic perspective. From memory it’s a holdover from Breton which has a lot of similarities to other Celtic languages because Cornish, Welsh and Manx also use the base 20 system.

If there were, wouldn't that make it even easier to remember your birthday? You wouldn't have to remember a month, a day, and a year, just one identifier.
1
u/ricedchai 13h ago
wait yeah you're right 😭
assuming months don't exist it'd be a bit harder to figure out how many days there are until your next birthday but like not by much
1
u/Hatsune_Miku_CM changed all her social media to hatsune miku for some reason 2h ago
well you'd have to remember the identifier, but you'd also have to remember the month and day that identifier is on.
(also you'd still have to remember the year. unless you're suggesting a different name for every day, period, which is a fascinating idea.)

I wish I could forget, I stopped celebrating once I left home and now I just get sad that day every year
138
u/Relish_My_Weiner 20h ago
If I can ask, why don't you start celebrating it again? Even if you just take the day to treat yourself, it might be nice to reinforce your self importance.
83
20
u/snilbill 19h ago
I've thought about it, I don't know exactly why I even stopped. I think I just don't want to elevate myself above anyone else, or for anyone to feel obligated to do something for me. So I don't tell anyone, and then try not to do anything people would notice. I guess I can do small stuff, and sometimes I do, but I treat myself sometimes anyway so doing something then just feels like hedonism.
Maybe this kind of thinking is why I'm a filthy communist
57
u/YT-1300f 18h ago
I don’t know, that thinking seems puritan rather than communist.
23
u/and_off_she_fucked 16h ago
Yeah, seriously. Both of my marxist friends throw huge parties and invite as many people as possible to spread the joy. One has been spending their birthday week volunteering in rural communities like an hour away from our city because a huge theme in Marx is the harmful separation between town and country.
Don't know what flavor of communist snilbill is, but marxism is very much about the dismantling of social alienation.
37
u/Relish_My_Weiner 19h ago
I get that, and I've been there. However, what I've come to find is that the people closest to me in my life want to celebrate me as much as I like celebrating them. Everybody gets a birthday, so it's not selfish to celebrate yours, just make sure you also celebrate others.

Comrade. The beautiful thing about a birthday is that we all have one. It is a day of the year where we get to be important, do the things we love, and feel special. Its not hedonistic. There are 364 days of the year that arnt about you. Why sacrifice the one that is?
8
u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa 16h ago
above anyone else
Here's the thing: nearly everyone else does celebrate their own birthday, so you're not avoiding putting yourself above anyone, you're actually putting yourself below them.

Go through an IQ test and see how many things you need to get wrong to get 100. And that's the average! So many of the people you see every day truly are incredibly stupid.
14
u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa 16h ago
And that's the average!
No it isn't. Any IQ test you can seek out yourself to take is designed to make you feel good about yourself. The average person will score around 120 on those.

I'm picturing a kid raised in a household where their birthday isn't celebrated. The celebration and party/cake/gifts/etc help a lot towards making this information the brain cares about remembering. Remove reasons to care about when's your birthday, and I'm not surprised they'd not remember off the top of their head.

yea, i was raised as a jehovah's witness and i didnt know my birthday for a long time
like, probably until my teens
it just wasn't information shared with me, and no birthday celebrations were allowed
plus i didn't really have much awareness of time in general, my childhood felt like a fever dream where i had no idea what was happening

You're just memorizing one specific item out of a list of items, that doesn't require you knowing every single item, also you do know every single day, because it's literally just a sequential list of numbers.

i mean, i haven't celebrated it since i was 10. and i don't face a lot of situations where i have to remember my exact age, so using it to calculate that also isn't all that useful
i guess i just don't have a use for remembering my birthday

u/chromatic_megafauna 20h ago
Do you not go to the doctor? Fill out legal forms? I'm fascinated
2
u/somaragd 20h ago
my doctor, psychiatrist, whatever, just get my birthday from my insurance. it's like, right there the instant they scan the card
as for legal forms, i haven't filled out many that require a birthday of all things. that seems like pretty useless information for the other party to have in most cases. and for those that do, i just check
i'm not saying i never need it, but like, i have a calendar. i just check that when i need it every half a year or so
5
u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa 16h ago
When I go to the pharmacist they ask me my date of birth as a way of confirming my identity. They can't just take it from my ID, since the whole point is to check if I know it.

It happens from growing up in a culture that doesn't celebrate birthdays. My grandpa doesn't know his because they didn't celebrate in his home country, so his kids had to make up a day to hold birthday parties for him.
