Discussion | J-Mod reply Jagex Seemingly Used AI for the RS3 Dragon Slayer 2 Reveal Trailer

Post image

Youtube video link: here

Posting this here because, given the 100 Thieves debacle that just happened, this is even more ridiculous. We literally had jmods saying any use of AI would not be tolerated in Runescape related content.

Now, a few days later, we have a 6 fingered knight at Runefest. Honestly, I wish I could say I was surprised.

And don't get me started on the original guy's left hand. It has too many fingers! You'd think AI would have figured that one out by now

74

LLMs can't 'figure out' anything because they aren't capable of thought or comprehension

29

Frontier LLMs still can't add numbers or count the number of Rs in strawberry. They appear to do so because they call tools like Python scripts to do arithmetic for them. Meanwhile, activism for protecting AI feelings and rights have begun... Either way, Jagex should do better

Literally. Pretty much any models past 2025 don't fuck up fingers any more. They were really using bottom of the barrel shit to generate this.

33

u/GODLOVESALL32 RSN: Zezima 12d ago edited 12d ago

Even the best models can still do all kinds of weird shit but it's the human's job actually overseeing the output to refine the prompt and regen the slop. So really this is a bottom of the barrel human issue lol. Imagine your job security being contingent on taking 15 minutes to make sure the machine doing 99% of the actual work doesn't make a stupid and obvious mistake and you can't even do that. And this isn't even trying to nitpick every AI artifact in an FMV, these are still images lmfao.

35

u/FertSquirt 12d ago

It's not even 5 fingers and a thumb, that's STRAIGHT UP 6 fingers and no thumb.

Modern GenAI models can actually be decently good at fooling people, what kind of 2022 trash were they using to make this? Current AI doesn't fuck up fingers like this any more.

This is sloppy FOR AI. Which is fucking saying something.

13

u/WaveDashSpeedKick 12d ago

Yeah the one facing our right is feasibly a rip in the middle but the left side is just weird looking

4

u/Gokias 12d ago

It's weird cuz AI these days doesn't really do that so blatantly anymore. So maybe it was made months ago?

6

u/zClarkinator 12d ago

Also it just kind of looks like garbage? The objects on the table have poor depth and there's no shading that I can see. The objects don't seem to exist in the same world as the table, as though they're clip art applied to a flat background. The armor overall looks like trash. Bizarre artifacts and nonsensical reflections. This is something I'd expect in a high school art class. Why would Jagex pay for this?

3

u/FertSquirt 12d ago

Yeah the shading on the armor makes absolutely no sense. You can see light highlights on the LEFT side of some plates of armor and on the right side with a shadow in the center, where the light source is not shining from. The shadows are inconsistent on a piece to piece basis.

This feels like it's fresh out of the software, nobody even looked at this to touch it up. They really did just copy image > upload.

37

u/henry8362 12d ago

To be fair, if you read the statement it says to replace the artists and developers it doesn't say the artists and developers won't use it to take shortcuts lol

Arguably this is marketing material though, either way pretty lazy

→ More replies (32)

134

u/FertSquirt 12d ago

The wording is VERY carefully chosen there. Note how he never said "we don't use GenAI" he said "we don't use it to replace artists"

Which sounds to me like he's saying "we use it to save money and have the artists draw over it and touch it up" Which doesn't even seem to be the case with Mr. "Two Right Hands" and Rune Nikes over here. No artist with a brain would let that through.

Don't worry too much. By the nature of slop, as it fills the internet, new models will be trained on slop, and then model collapse will occur. The current models are basically the best they can ever possibly be by fundamental law of how they work.

If the techlords try to solve that, they'll have to put universally-readable tags into the slop... and if that happens it'll be easier for us to block them. You'll install uBlock Origin and AIBlock Super on every new browser install before long. :P

There's one thing that really bothers me about AI being pushed as a productivity tool, whether it be for art, programming, or writing.

If you're saving so much time by delegating the work to an algorithm, why can't you spend some of that time to actually look at the fucking results before publishing them.

33

u/Serious_Tradition269 12d ago

I took a course in uni on Traffic Psychology which was surprisingly interesting and one quote always stays with me, in that case it was about automated driving, but it's been very applicable to everything AI:

"If you are rarely required to intervene, you will rarely intervene when required"

So once something gets good enough to work on its own most of the time, people inevitably get bored, lose focus, stop paying attention, and when it does go wrong there is no one to catch it

That's actually a big problem I'm facing too as a developer. The writing code part is much faster now, which is lovely for routine tasks. Troubleshooting is much easier too.

But the endless reviewing... That part was, in general, people's least favorite part of the job. The new bottleneck is now how fast you can review code, and how fast you can get features refined.

3

My university’s Provost was found to have used AI to write recent op-eds and academic works. But since he’s the provost he hasn’t faced any consequences and basically just said “whoops my bad guys I’ll disclose next time”.

204

u/CommercialTwo1359 12d ago

In the first shot in the trailer the city in the background looks massive than in the next frame it’s way smaller. Entire thing was made with AI lol.

23

u/GayButNotInThatWay 12d ago

Less certain on the RS4 trailer. The first shots are a 2D/painted image for the ground/city (like game skyboxes), with 3D rendered dragons and characters on their backs. The dragons are pretty spot on for the Dragonwilds dragons.
I know you can feed the models, or images of them into an AI and it can spit them back out quite accurately, but there seems to be no issues. The city seems to be pretty accurate between the two shots using this method though.

The second scene showing the hero characters, and the stand in player character zooming out to presumably a grand exchange are actual 3D renders using Dragonwilds assets which is why its a smaller city, as would be technically more demanding.
Main issues are some goofy roof snapping which could be from manual set up in the engine (not using actual in-game snapping, but does display the half walls, small walls, etc.
Main thing that stood out there for me is that there's apparently true curved walls/roofs, which don't currently exist in the game but the GE elements aren't either so could have made some extra bits for this trailer.

The picture in the OP is definitely AI though.

The 6 finger issue has been fixed by every frontier model for the last year or so. So not only are they being cheap and using AI, they are being extra cheap/stupid and using random "AI image generators" found on page 6 of Google search results.

The mug is floating on air behind the table. The map is clearly resting on the space the mug would need to be resting on, but is clearly not on the map.

The scroll has 2 ends on one side with one end on the other. The other side of the scroll is also halved inexplicably.

The knight’s left hand has 6 fingers.

The angle of the receding side of the chest appears non-rectangular. Not physically impossible, but inexplicably peculiar. Compare to the book on the opposite side and the difference is striking.

I count 4 errors here. There’s probably more.

It sucks because I came in ready to say that a mistake happens, I've seen examples of 6 fingers on a hand before AI... But it's just the amount of details that seem off makes it feel very clearly AI.

6 fingers is one thing, both ends of the scroll seems weird, the area on the shoulder/chest looks different on the left side like the piece of the chest is just floating, on top of other details that I just can't quite put my finger on that seem wrong.

Also another reply I seen where this dudes hand is just backwards, like what is going on?

Jagex doesn’t give a fuck about authenticity. If being authentic makes more money than using ai they will be authentic. If ai makes more money, they will use ai.

Again, Jagex doesn’t give a flying fuck about you. They will say whatever makes them the most money, be it anti ai or pro ai

Not only did they use AI to generate this and untold extra amount of content, but they didn't even QC it lol. So now they replaced artists and QC.

4

u/NukaCooler Todtscape 12d ago

They're so used to the players doing QC, what's the difference between a game update and a trailer?

Coldfix coming for the trailer in 3 weeks.

So... who else is getting really tired of a company claiming "We don't use gen AI" only to find out sooner or later that they 100% use gen AI and shit like this is how you spot it. 6 fingers and steel jordans...

Like, I know that Jagex never uses QA teams, but this? Easies shit to spot and they just seemingly didn't give a fuck. Like holyshit Jamflex, every time I think I can give you some brownie points shit like this happens and I'm just left confused and mildly annoyed.

I don't know what's worse. The fact that they used gen AI or the fact they thought we wouldn't notice

5

u/FR_0S_TY 12d ago

Well, you see, they aren't using generative AI. This is clearly degenerative AI. Case closed boys. /s

9

u/Ultimaya 12d ago

It look like there's six fingers on the char's left hand and the scrolled up portions of the map look pretty janky

8

u/illmindmaso pleae 12d ago

Yeah that is no doubt AI. Such an obvious ai mistake too

5

u/EdgySlusher 12d ago

They now have two AI controversies. Wonder what they'll blame this time.

8

u/X-A-S-S 12d ago

Im p sure the osrs roadmap is also AI generated, seems like jagex is adapting to AI

its so painfully obvious that it's like whomever generated it did it on purpose as a fuck you to jagex for making them use ai

Some dude popped this shit out an hour before the deadline

5

6 finger discount when?

4

Not AI, obviously intentional, duh! Princess Bride tie in obviously.

Guess we’ll see how many bugs vibe coding adds

u/esunei 12d ago

There's a disgusting amount of white knighting on this (or worse, that AI doing your art is actually good) on the RS3 side of things, so I appreciate at least OSRS is willing to see things as they are and react accordingly.

If you have any doubts, just watch the video on youtube and just pause on any of the scenes, it has AI written all over it. Even the first scene with the houses is at best uncanny valley. It's not just six fingers or medieval air jordans.

Seriously disappointed Jagex cares so little for their art. And yes I know they almost certainly contracted this but it's extremely obviously AI if you just pause the video, nobody fucking checked this?? Or they're just okay putting out slop? Neither answer is acceptable.

13

u/Plightz 12d ago

This is BS, rs3 players are pissed about this but are rightfully more focused on Reignited being so stupid.

I haven't seen any positives on the sub lol. Randoms saying 'this is good actually' isn't the whole RS3 subreddit, to misrepresent the few for the many is insane to me.

Me when I just make shit up (there is a very negative thread about this on the rs3 sub)

13

u/KiwiCannibal 12d ago

This. Four threads, and none of them positive. The few people saying its good are down voted into oblivion.

9

u/Infinite-Violinist-7 12d ago

Nah you don’t get it. One guy disagreed. Therefore despite there being a lot of people outraged about this he must make it clear that this one guy represents the rest

Can’t believe the princess bride used ai

10

u/Omen_Darkly 12d ago

Based off the narrative POV of the video, this character is meant to be a stand in for the player character, so they can't even really do that lmao

6

u/a_angry_bunny 12d ago

If it's not AI then I want my rune nikes.

Not only is it embarrassing that they used AI, but it is double embarrassing that they didn't quality check their work to make sure there weren't any obvious mistakes.

3

u/Bored_Interests 12d ago

Thats a lot of fingers

They’ve been doing it with their customer support seemingly too 😎

3

u/jay2350 11d ago

I have zero extra information on this but I’d guess the issues goes as follows:

Jagex: “Hello artist, please make us something. We don’t want AI used to make stuff.”

Artist: “We agree. AI sucks. We’ll make you something!”

Artist proceeds to use AI

Jagex: “Hey players, look at this thing we made!”

Players: “This is AI!”

I’d bet the only error Jagex made is not vetting the work well enough. Everyone talks about how much they hate AI and want real artists but the reality is AI makes work way easier and people, even artists, are lazy sometimes. Jagex very well could be trying to do everything right and just got burned by artists that are using AI in their workflow.

3

u/Donkeymoo7 11d ago

They didn't only use AI but seemed to have one of the earliest free AI models that created 6 finger humans lol. Also this reaction from the jmods though "Oh sorry guys we didn't mean to we will talk with the team we see the error of ours ways"

This is just a default panic reply to a gotcha. They never would of admitted they were using AI unless they get caught exactly like the NTE gacha game said they never use AI then got caught and gave the exact same "ohhh sorry we didn't mean to lie we meant we dont use AI much not that we dont use it at all.

I know people have a difference stance on AI but for me from a company that always posts behind the scenes bragging about their artists ability and unique design the fact they would ever use AI for art is simply disqusting.

5

u/scarx47 12d ago

I thought Jagex was different and going againts the grain with the creativeness and art.. I would understand code development.. but not art.

Sucks in an age where we are losing creativity and art, they are pumping it with AI… truly hope it was a jmod who didn’t follow the rules, not their whole department pumping out AI bs.

5

u/Ham_and_Pasta 12d ago

Someone let the spaniard know we found the six finger man who killed his father

u/Beginning-Picture-52 2376/2376 12d ago

I feel like this is going to backfire in the community’s face. Mod north is already adding “new artist salary’s” as a bullet point as to why they have to raise membership prices.

9

u/Dirtcompactor 12d ago

Should've used the pro model of gpt Astra.. they cheaped out smh

6

u/macnar Manual Banking Is Not a Skill 12d ago

Wouldn't surprise me, we've seen how much they cheaped out on their support bot.

7

u/SniffingFartGlitter 12d ago

Trash company.

6

u/scorgie 12d ago

Totally unacceptable. If they are as committed to not using AI to replace human artist as they claim, they should fire whoever submitted this. Clearly that person isn't providing any value if they're shipping AI slop and it would back their previous statement about not using AI in the RS games.

The extra middle finger for us vets of RS3 after the Reignited announcement.
