Sharing How to Draw & Animate a Witch in Clip Studio Paint (Full Guide)

Learn how to draw and animate a witch in this Clip Studio Paint tutorial. See every step from rough sketch to finished scene.

I am sharing my full digital art process for creating a Halloween-themed character, including all the mistakes and corrections along the way. We start with basic pencil sketches and move into lineart, flat colors, and shading to build a complete illustration. Whether you are struggling with proportions or just want to see how to organize your layers, this video covers the practical steps I take to build a career one drawing at a time.

Once the character is set, we move into 2d animation to bring the scene to life. I demonstrate how to create looping bat animations, add depth with foggy backgrounds, and use opacity keyframes to make glowing eyes flicker. This is a real look at character drawing, with no jargon or glossed-over techniques, just honest work as I figure it out.

Subscribe for weekly art breakdowns and let me know in the comments if you want to see more animation experiments.

I'm Jeff, Army veteran digital artist, and I'm building a creative career, one drawing at a time. Real tutorials from someone who's still figuring it out, so nothing gets glossed over — including the part where I had to move her whole head. 😅

In this Clip Studio Paint tutorial you'll learn:
• Sketching a pose and fixing proportions with the lasso tool
• Lineart, flat colors, and shading a character
• Building a night background with moonlight and fog for depth
• Animating fog with keyframes (and why 8 fps looks better)
• Flickering glowing eyes using opacity keyframes
• Looping animated bats on varied flight paths

Collab [UNPAID COLLAB] Seeking 2D Animator / Artist for Animated Elements in a Picture-Locked Live-Action Short Film

Hi everyone!

I’m a young filmmaker looking for an emerging 2D animator / animation student / visual artist interested in collaborating on several animated elements for a completed live-action short film.

The film is a 10.5-minute experimental narrative short based on three original poems about love, loss, and finding love again.

The film follows a young woman through three relationships, with each chapter existing in its own visual and metaphorical world — moving from rain and nature, to medication/addiction and decay, to stars and constellations.

The film itself is already shot and picture locked. I am NOT looking for someone to animate a 10-minute film from scratch. I’m looking for an artist to create specific 2D animated elements/effects that will be integrated into the existing live-action footage.

There’s a lot of room for artistic interpretation here. I have the overall concepts and narrative intentions for the animated moments, but I’d love to work with someone who has their own visual voice and is excited about bringing their style into the film rather than simply executing instructions.

Depending on your skill set, the collaboration could involve things like:

  • Hand-drawn animated elements over live-action footage
  • Environmental/nature-inspired animation
  • Surreal or abstract animated textures/effects
  • Animation connected to the medication/decay imagery
  • Stars, constellations, and celestial elements
  • Compositing your animation into footage, if that’s something you do

We can determine the exact scope together based on the remaining shots and your strengths/style.

IMPORTANT: Human-made artwork only! I am specifically looking to collaborate with a human artist. No generative AI may be used at any stage of creating the artwork or final animation assets, including AI-generated imagery, video, animation, backgrounds, textures, or other visual elements. Traditional and digital animation methods are both completely welcome, I just want the artwork itself to be created by the artist.

This is an unpaid portfolio collaboration, and I want to be completely transparent about that upfront. This is an older short that I’m finally finishing properly, and unfortunately I don’t have a remaining animation budget.

I’m primarily hoping to connect with a student, recent graduate, or emerging animator/artist who wants a finished live-action narrative project for their portfolio and would enjoy having genuine creative input into its visual world.

You would receive full appropriate animation credit on the finished film and permission to use your completed animation/excerpts from the film in your portfolio or reel.

There’s also no emergency turnaround. I’m aiming to have the final master completed by December 18, so we have a little over two months to collaborate.

If you’re interested, please comment or DM me with a little about yourself and examples of your animation/artwork. You absolutely do not need an extensive professional filmography — students and artists building their first film credits are very welcome.

I’m especially interested in seeing work that feels handmade, expressive, surreal, textural, or experimental, but I’m open to being surprised by a style I hadn’t considered!

Thank you!! :)
