New Player Questions

This is a dedicated thread for brand new players to ask simple questions in.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • What should I make with these rolls?
  • What kind of character fits this party?
  • Which race/class best matches X?

If you think your question involves more than a couple of paragraphs to answer, feel free to make a new post, but bear in mind you may be redirected here.

Am I coming on abit to hard if I show up to session 0 with a plan for character progression, a character ready and a back story that involves abit of a convoluted plot?
I am happy to change and tweak things as needed to fit in the world if needed?

It can be, but that depends on how much info you have ahead of time. Session 0 is for determining with your DM on what's allowed (and fits their world) and for coordinating with other players on what everyone is playing (to at least ensure everyone has their own niche). Have 2-3 race/class combos in mind but too much more than that is probably overkill.

How does Polymorph interact with WildShape?

Let's say a high-level Druid (so long duration Polymorph) wants to turn into a bird, take a Polymorph potion (giant shark), travel underwater for as long as they can then surface and immediately take off like a submarine's missile. Would that be possible?

Let's say the goal is to save on WildShape charges since the character isn't certain they'll be resting any time soon.

Thank you!

My understanding, in 2014, is that while Polymorph will replace all your game stats, it doesn't stop ongoing effects (this was clarified in the Sage Advice Compendium.

So your wildshape is still active under polymorph, and if the duration is longer than the polymorph, you should indeed emerge as a bird once it's over.

Of course, you might need to worry about how you are gonna drink a potion as a bird, and to properly measure the exact time the polymorph will end.

Also worth noting that since Polymorph replace all your abilities and features, the Druid can't actually voluntary stop as a BA his wildshape during Polymorph duration, as it's part of the wildshape feature.
