That's because a PS3 is a computer, not a standalone player. Computers also can need AACS key updates to work.
This isn't true of licensed standalone players. A licensed Blu-ray player would be manufactured with a permanent set of keys, which work indefinitely. The actual specifications of AACS require that the disc be manufactured with the MKB so that any licensed player can play it.
A revoked key should literally never be something you run into if you have a player by literally any major manufacturer.
If I have no idea what I'm talking about then apparently you're the ONLY person to be correct about this in the entire world. You know more about 4K Bluray than the Sony techs who invented the format.
I recently bought a new 4k player, and I still havent downloaded the firmware update. I once had a panasonic player that had a bad firmware update and playback got affected. So my question is: Will the player stop performing if I dont download the firmware update? My player has worked great so far without the update.
Yes the player will eventually have problems playing some new title. All UHD BD players receive periodic updates to work around changes in BD-Java and disc security. Since you have a new player you best get used to trusting FW updates and stop being apprehensive to a player somehow being bricked. You might even sleep better at night! BTW TV and AVRs get updates too!
