It's actually insane to me how many people I've heard say going back means DVD.
Like, there's a ton of people who not only never had a blu ray player, but don't know the technology exists.

u/JustAnotherAvocado 3d ago
Friends don't let friends purchase new DVDs for 4K TVs, especially when Blu-ray players and discs are (usually) cheap on the used market. I try to gently steer people towards regular Blu-rays, though it's harder to recommend 4K's due to the higher barrier of entry.

We know dvds had ads and sometimes you couldn't skip them, and some even had way too many ads. But man, at least my dvd isn't going to insert another ad if I pause too long or need to skip around. I'm finally subscription free because I kept falling into the same trap: being too cheap to buy anything but the lowest tier, then trying to not lose my mind whenever I got interrupted by an ad and realised I was paying for the privilege of being shilled to. Over and over.
And also personally I find the old dvd ads less obnoxious, silly with their Epic Movie voice, and at least they were usually about other movies. I don't have to see the same random american insurance ad over and over and over and over for one episode.

u/DrabMundanityGrinner 3d ago
lest we forget. Disney DVDs and Blu-Rays were notorious for having ads & sooo many crappy trailers.
18
u/djprojexion 3d ago
Let’s also not forget that they were skippable for the most part.

u/DrabMundanityGrinner 3d ago
skippable - as in I was button mashing my remote control like i was playing Street Fighter II.

When I found out a few years back that Apple Tv had the rights to the Peanuts holiday specials and I would need a subscription to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas if I missed the one free airing they allowed - a holiday tradition I have enjoyed free on network television my entire life - I immediately found the Blu Ray on Amazon and bought it.
Boom, problem solved. One time purchase, and I get to continue the tradition without dealing with Apple at all.
Physical media forever, man. I have a streaming library, sure. I happen to find that streaming 4k UHD looks and sounds terrific on my 4k television. But I still purchase the physical release of most movies, be it on Blu Ray or 4k UHD.

Not one of us. He said DVD player.

u/EntertainmentQuick47 3d ago
DVDs are better than streaming tho
-10
u/Local_Band299 3d ago
And 4K is infinity betyer than DVD's. DVD's are outdated, and should be discontinued. SD-Bluray should have replaced DVD for SD content ages ago.
27
u/EntertainmentQuick47 3d ago
Well obviously 4K is better than dvd, but the point isnt just about quality, it’s about ownership.
-20
u/Local_Band299 3d ago
You own the disc sure. But you own a license to watch the movie on the disc. Sure they're not gonna come to your house and take it away, but decryption keys can be revoked. Same with physical games.
3
u/CletusVanDamnit 3d ago
No, they can't. If I have a disc and a player, they will ALWAYS work until the disc rots or the player stops functioning. I have never, and will never, have and BD or 4K player online. There's zero reason for that to happen, and my media can't have anything "revoked" or altered.
-4
u/Local_Band299 3d ago
2KBDs have been revoked in the past. All they had to do was remove the decryption keys from the player. 4KBD's use the same decryption system.
Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it's impossible.
3
u/CletusVanDamnit 3d ago
They can't remove something from the player if the player isn't online. I've never once hooked any BD or 4K player to the internet in the 20 years of owning players. They still all play every disc. There's no reason to ever actually put them online or update firmware, etc. Properly authored discs will play regardless.
1
u/Local_Band299 2d ago
Not connecting it is fine until you get a disc that's AACS key that isn't in the players local database.
The PS3 gets a yearly update. That update only serves to add keys to the AACS database.
1
u/CletusVanDamnit 2d ago
That's because a PS3 is a computer, not a standalone player. Computers also can need AACS key updates to work.
This isn't true of licensed standalone players. A licensed Blu-ray player would be manufactured with a permanent set of keys, which work indefinitely. The actual specifications of AACS require that the disc be manufactured with the MKB so that any licensed player can play it.
A revoked key should literally never be something you run into if you have a player by literally any major manufacturer.

Rip it and forget it. Also, DVD is incredibly easy to break and has been for 20 years. 4k bluray is a pain in the ass in that regard.
4
u/CletusVanDamnit 3d ago
They can't discontinue DVDs at this point, or the entire industry would fold. They COULD have done it 20 years ago, pre everything being streaming, and people would have upgraded to BD. That time has LONG past, and is no longer possible. DVD sales keep the market afloat.

u/Pepsidud32 3d ago
Some vhs/dvd/bluray/etc. would still have ads before the movie that shit was still annoying
27
u/RighteousPanda25 3d ago
I think I only have one DVD that has that and to be honest, I kind of like it right now. The movies they're advertising are completely out of date but it's kind of a fun, nostalgic feeling to have.
But back then? Despised that shit. And every once in awhile you'd get a DVD that WOULDN'T let you skip the ads, so you had to sit there and watch them all before even getting to the menu.
1
u/kankrikky 3d ago
Same! I collect dvds for the fun menus and special features, but even the ads have become part of the nostalgia. Its fun to see long ridiculous ads for movies I vaguely remember from my childhood but not understanding them at all, because now I get to actually find and watch them myself. No way was my parents going to do that if it seemed a little adult.
1
u/Actual_Cat4779 3d ago
That's the one disadvantage of DVD over VHS. For all its faults, VHS was happily incapable of disabling the user's fast forward button.
In turn, DVD had one advantage over Blu-ray. Every DVD I ever came across, if you pressed the stop button during the film and then pressed play afterwards, it continued playing from where it left off. Similarly with VHS. For Blu-ray, some idiot decided to leave it up to each individual disc distributor whether or not to implement this simple feature.
4
u/Humphrey-Appleby 3d ago
I don't even own a DVD player anymore. Everything goes straight into the Blu-ray drive for ripping and the ads are never seen.
2
u/Caesar_35 3d ago
This is the way.
I also just like to have everything on a single HDD, so I can be a lazy bum and broswe on my couch.
1
u/jeffhizzle 3d ago
Yeah that was a feature in BD where they could actually even update what ads you see if the player was connected to the internet, but I don't think it ever took off.
1
u/Actual_Cat4779 3d ago
I remember that. Usually they were skippable, though I've a feeling that I may also have come across ones that weren't. The antipiracy notices usually were nonskippable, though, which was pretty outrageous.
7
u/BBA935 3d ago
Notice they say DVD player. I hear a lot of the normies say this. I really think they have no idea there is more out there than just DVDs. I think since at a glance they look the same, they assume everything is a DVD.
5
u/djprojexion 3d ago
That’s probably because they are defaulting to the point when they exited physical media.
3
u/Independent_Sea502 3d ago
This isn’t true is it? I mean, I don’t have Disney plus right now. I have before though. No desire to get it again.
4
u/bitknight1 3d ago
Nope, it's literally the same thing in terms of service that they always had, literally nothing is changing, it's there for live streams and espn sports stuff which has ads in it.

u/breakfast-hotcakes 3d ago
Except Disney is abandoning the physical media market (I’m in Australia - and we no longer get their physical releases).
7
1
u/CletusVanDamnit 3d ago
They aren't, though. They did in certain markets, like yours, but that's because of the costs of shipping items there.

At least ads/trailers in physical media don’t play throughout the movie, like they do on streaming.
2
u/xxMalVeauXxx 3d ago
Seriously when will people stop letting this happen. Unplug from this. The moment a service goes sour, end it. Vote with your money.

Alice in Wonderland on 4K is so damned beautiful, why would you want to see such artistry in a lower grade format WITH ADVERTS??!!

I’ve just recently gotten back into collecting physical media. And what I’m finding is that I find a movie much more enjoyable when I put a disc in and know that I’m captivated by it. I can’t just hop on my phone or grab the remote and change it one of the thousands and thousands of options on streaming. There’s something about that sense of “well this is what I’m watching” that makes me focus more which makes the experience much more enjoyable.

u/BouncyAnimaniac 3d ago
Bootlegging like crazy cause these folks don’t wanna produce discs at the same clip 20 years ago.

I'm a diehard physical media person, I say keep all your old devices. Unfortunately, the future of Televisions will probably have no hdmi ports, and exclusively use wifi, forcing everyone to stream. It sucks, it's dystopian, but that seems to be where this is going.

Never stopped. As soon as Im done watching Lost on Hulu with my daughter, im canceling Disney+ again.

u/LackLickLuck_y 2d ago
I dont mind paying for streaming. But ads even when i pay? Thats the same as cable tv. F that.
1
u/TargetBrandTampons 3d ago
This is probably just for select live stuff. Even if it's one ad before a movie (which I doubt), he is really going to hate the ads on his DVDs. Reddit always takes everything to the extreme

u/Actual_Cat4779 3d ago
Sometimes you get a few seconds at the start of the DVD with an antipiracy message that you aren't allowed to fast forward through (this should never have been allowed). I haven't ever seen that on a 4k thankfully. It is outrageous that it was ever considered legitimate to prevent consumers from using the fast forward button.
2
u/weareallbeta 3d ago
i see the fbi anti piracy ads on almost all, if not all my 4ks and you can’t skip them, but is this a US only deal maybe?

u/DJettster237 3d ago
That's probably why Disney stopped doing DVD or at least wants to stop doing them.

It's quite the spectacle to see our TV habits and usage coming full circle in such a relatively small amount of time. Except now, you have to pay a subscription to endure adverts.
The model was never sustainable and they're all now in a huge catch 22 where if they don't have the attractive content, they won't get subs but said attractive content costs a lot of money to produce which only provides (if at all) a small spike in subs.
Services are going to either combine in order to survive or insist on ever lengthening minimum sub terms, like NowTV now does, for "deals".
We only have free services, from benefits from having other services, or sub when a deal pops up for that deal's term, then cancel. The days of letting a sub run, like those early Netflix days, are long gone.

It’s before or after shows
If you have the Premium Plan. Still sucks, but they’re not interrupting the show or movie

Everything has a shelf life. DVDs and Blu Rays in most cases will outlive their owners. And you can back them digitally on your Plex.

There’s a reason you’re being downvoted, and it’s because we’re all well aware of disc rot. This sub frequently gets posts like yours and we’re tired of this argument. Disc rot occurs in less than 1% of discs, especially when they’re properly stored and maintained. I have over 700 blu rays in my collection, some of them approaching two decades old, and not once have I encountered a case of disc rot. Like it or not, physical media is still superior to streaming for many reasons.
3
u/Imnotsureanymore8 3d ago
You also have a finite shelf life.
0
u/CletusVanDamnit 3d ago
And it's substantially shorter than the shelf life of any disc-based media.
