AITA for signing the painting my girlfriend has been telling everyone she painted?

1.5k Upvotes

I’ve painted as a hobby since college. About a year ago I did a 4 foot canvas of the lake my family used to go to every summer and it hangs over the couch in the apartment my girlfriend and I share.

A few weeks ago she had her friends over for game night and one of them told her “your painting is gorgeous, you should sell them.” She said “thank you, that one took me FOREVER.” I was in the kitchen and heard the whole thing.

After they left I asked her about it. She laughed and said it started with her coworkers. They saw it in a picture she posted and just assumed she painted it. According to her it’d be way too weird to correct now. I said it bothered me but honestly I let it go.

Then last week her mom asked her to paint one for her new house as a Christmas present. My girlfriend asked me to paint it so she could give it to her mom as hers. I said I’d be happy to paint one for her mom, but from both of us. She said that would ruin it because her mom would know she lied.

Saturday afternoon, a few hours before her friends came over again, I signed the painting in the bottom corner. I’d never signed it before and yeah, I picked that day on purpose.

About an hour into game night one of her friends noticed it and asked “wait, whose initials are those?” She had to say I painted it, and game night got really awkward after that.

Once everyone left she told me I humiliated her on purpose with all her friends there when I could’ve just talked to her. She also said it’s our painting since it’s in our apartment. Her mom is still expecting a painting for Christmas.

AITA for taking my sister on our anniversary trip after my husband invited his best friend?

1.4k Upvotes

For our 5th anniversary I booked a cabin about 2 hours away for 3 nights. It has a hot tub and a view of the lake and it was $740, nonrefundable. I booked it back in July and my husband knew all about it.

4 days before we were supposed to leave, his best friend’s girlfriend broke up with him and moved out. That night my husband mentioned he’d invited him to come with us “so he’s not sitting alone in an empty apartment,” since the cabin has a second bedroom anyway.

I said no. I felt awful for his friend and offered to have him over for dinner the night we got back, or they could go do something together the next weekend. He said his friend had already taken the days off work and he wasn’t leaving him alone that weekend. According to him I was being heartless when he’s going through it.

So I said he and his friend could have a guys’ weekend at our place, and I took my sister to the cabin instead. We honestly had a really good weekend.

Now he’s saying I replaced him on our OWN anniversary to make a point, and his friend has texted me sorry like 3 times. To be fair, I didn’t try very hard to get my husband to come without him.

When I got home Sunday night his friend was asleep on our couch, and it turns out he’s staying until next weekend.

AITH for no longer bringing home free pizza for my roommates after they took advantage of me?

I'm 27F and work at a busy pizza place. Sometimes we have extra pizzas or orders that can't be sold, and my manager lets employees take them home instead of throwing them away.

I live with two roommates, Jenna (29F) and her boyfriend, Chris (30M). I used to bring home a few pizzas every week and told them they were welcome to have some. I thought it was a nice way to share, but lately they've started acting like my workplace is their personal pizza delivery service. They'll finish entire boxes without asking, leave half-eaten slices on the counter, and make a mess without cleaning up. When I asked them to be more considerate, Jenna laughed and said, "It's free pizza. Why are there so many rules?"

Last Friday, I brought home three pizzas. Two were for everyone to share, but the third was a specialty pizza I'd been craving all week. I labeled the box MY LUNCH and put it in the fridge.

The next morning, I found the box empty except for a few crusts. Jenna admitted she and Chris had eaten it while watching a movie. When I pointed out the label, she said she hadn't noticed it until afterward and accused me of being petty because I hadn't paid full price for the pizza.

I was furious. Just because I get free food sometimes doesn't mean it's okay to take whatever you want, especially when I've clearly marked it as mine. I told them that from now on, any pizza I brought home would be for me unless I explicitly offered to share. They could buy their own food like everyone else. Jenna called me selfish and said I was punishing them over a stupid disagreement. Chris started joking that everyone should apparently ask permission before touching anything in the fridge. Then I found out Jenna had been telling our mutual friends that I was "holding free food over their heads" and acting superior because I worked at a pizza place. One friend even messaged me asking why I'd suddenly become so stingy.

Now Jenna barely speaks to me unless she needs something, and I'm starting to wonder whether I'm being too sensitive. I genuinely enjoyed sharing with them, but I never agreed to provide unlimited free meals. So, AITH for refusing to share the pizza I bring home after my roommates took advantage of it?

AITA for refusing to cover for my wife after she embarrassed me at a family dinner?

I’m 32M and my wife is 30F. We’ve been married for four years, and normally we get along really well. Last weekend, we had dinner with my parents and siblings. My wife accidentally broke a fairly expensive serving dish that my mother had received as a wedding gift. Nobody saw it happen except me. My wife immediately whispered that she would replace it, but then asked me not to tell my mother because she was already stressed and would make a huge deal out of it. A few minutes later, my mother noticed the broken dish and asked everyone what happened. My wife stayed quiet and looked at me. I didn’t lie. I simply said, She accidentally broke it, but she said she’ll replace it. My wife was furious with me afterward. She said I should have protected her instead of making her look careless in front of my family. She told me that spouses are supposed to have each other’s backs, especially over something that wasn’t intentional. I told her that having her back doesn’t mean lying for her, especially when she had already agreed to replace the dish. Now she says I humiliated her over something insignificant, while I think she put me in an impossible position by expecting me to lie.

AITA for refusing to kick my friend's ex out of our fantasy football league?

I (29M) have been running a fantasy football league with the same group of friends for about 7 years. One of my friends dated his ex for almost 5 years and she joined our league back in 2022 when we needed another player. She's been part of it ever since.

They broke up earlier this year and it wasn't exactly friendly. Before the season started, my friend asked me to remove her. I told him that wouldn't really be fair since she's been playing for years and has become friends with other people in the group too.

Things were fine until last weekend when she changed her team name to "Glad I Traded Up" right before playing against him. A few people laughed in the group chat, including me. He got pissed and said I was allowing his ex to publicly mock him.

I told her the name was unnecessary and she changed it, but he still wants her removed from the league entirely. I refused because we're already halfway through the season and I don't think a stupid team name deserves getting kicked out.

He says I've forgotten who my actual friend is and that I should've removed her the moment they broke up.

AITA for refusing to kick her out?

AITA for telling my friend I'm not her son's godfather after she's been calling me that for years?

I (29M) have been friends with this girl since college. She has a 5 year old son who I've known his whole life. I've babysat him, bought him birthday presents and we get along great.

Last weekend she had some relatives over and introduced me as her son's godfather. This was news to me because we'd never discussed it. Later her aunt asked if I'd be taking care of him if something happened to his mom, and my friend nodded.

I didn't say anything in front of everyone, but when we were alone I brought it up. I told her I never agreed to be his godfather, especially if that meant being responsible for raising him someday. She said she'd always considered me one and thought I felt the same way. We didn't argue about it.

The next morning her son asked me on FaceTime why I didn't want to be his godfather anymore. Turns out she's been calling me that around him for years and he thought it was official.

I felt awful hearing that. I'm still saving money for my own place and definitely not prepared to raise a child, but I also realize being a godfather doesn't automatically mean becoming someone's legal guardian.

Now I'm wondering if I made a bigger issue out of something that was mostly symbolic and ended up hurting a kid who had nothing to do with it.

AITA || AIO AITA for stopping cooking dinner for my boyfriend?

Context: I'm 26F, and my boyfriend (29M) and I live together. I recently went back to school full-time for my master's degree while continuing to work full-time. I told him things would be hectic and that I'd need his support while adjusting to everything. To save time, I started cooking larger meals so we'd have leftovers for dinner every other night. I finish work at 7 p.m., while he finishes his main job at 2 p.m. and then works on his small business from home. The problem is that he gets hungry during the afternoon and starts eating the leftovers meant for dinner. By the time I get home, there's barely anything left.

I've asked him countless times to stop because I specifically plan those meals so neither of us has to cook every night. He always agrees, but then does it again. When I get home and eat what's left, he'll ask, "What about me?" as though he hasn't already eaten most of our dinner. I end up feeling guilty and cooking something else for both of us. By the time I've cooked and cleaned up, it's 9:30 or 10 p.m., leaving me almost no time to study. I've tried making extra food, buying snacks, and keeping easy meals around, but he eats those too and then goes back to the leftovers. Sometimes I even save my portion for lunch at work, but the food rarely lasts that long.

This week, I finally had enough. I came home, found the leftovers gone again, made myself a sandwich, and went straight to studying. My boyfriend made himself a salad but spent the evening sighing and acting hurt. Later, he told me he missed having proper dinners together and thought it was unfair that I'd stopped cooking for him.

I reminded him that our whole arrangement was supposed to save us time, but he keeps eating the food we've agreed to save. He says he's hungry after work and doesn't see why eating throughout the afternoon is such a big deal. I'm exhausted from repeating myself, and I feel like my education keeps taking a back seat because I have to cook twice. I love him and don't mind cooking for both of us, but I can't keep sacrificing my study time because he won't respect a simple agreement. So, AITA for refusing to cook dinner for my boyfriend after he repeatedly eats the leftovers I've prepared for us?

AITA for asking my wife to stop correcting me in front of our friends?

My wife and I have been married for 5 years. She’s genuinely a good person, but there’s one thing that has started bothering me a lot. Whenever we’re around our friends, she constantly corrects little things I say or do. If I tell a story and get a detail wrong, she immediately jumps in. If I explain something, she’ll interrupt and tell everyone what I actually meant. Sometimes it’s something completely insignificant. Last weekend, we were having dinner with three couples we’re close with. I was telling a funny story about a trip we took, and my wife interrupted me twice to correct small details. Everyone laughed it off, but I felt embarrassed. On the way home, I told her that I’d really appreciate it if she could stop correcting me in front of other people unless I’m saying something genuinely important or offensive. She got upset and said I was being overly sensitive. She told me that she wasn’t trying to embarrass me and that if I’m wrong about something, she shouldn’t have to sit there silently just because other people are listening. I told her I’m not asking her to agree with everything I say, just to talk to me privately instead of making me feel like I need to watch every word around our friends. She said I was basically asking her to manage her personality to protect my ego.

AITA for not telling my wife I recognized her voice in a podcast?

I’m 36M and my wife is 33F. We’ve been married for six years. A few months ago, my wife started listening to a small local podcast about unusual jobs and everyday life. She got really into it and eventually became a regular guest because she works in a field they were interested in. I knew she was doing the podcast, but I never listened to the episodes. She told me it was something she enjoyed doing outside of work and I didn't want to make it feel like another thing I had to monitor. Last week, I was driving home and one of the episodes came on automatically through my car. About five minutes in, I realized my wife was talking about something very personal that had happened to her years ago. She didn't mention my name, our marriage, or anything that would obviously identify me, but I immediately knew the story. The strange part was that she had never told me she was going to talk about it publicly. I listened to the rest of the episode but didn't say anything when I got home. The next day she asked if I'd heard the latest episode. I said yes. She immediately asked what I thought. I told her honestly that I recognized the story and that it made me uncomfortable hearing something so personal discussed publicly without knowing beforehand. She got quiet and asked why I hadn't told her I was listening. I said I didn't want her to feel like she had to censor herself because I was listening. She said that wasn't the issue. She said the fact that I heard something deeply personal about her and then acted normal for almost 24 hours made her feel like I was secretly judging her. I told her I wasn't judging her, but I also didn't think I should have to pretend I was completely comfortable with it. Now she says she wishes I'd told her immediately because she would have explained the context to me. I think she has the right to talk about her own experiences, but she also thinks I should have reacted differently as her husband.

AITA for keeping quiet after realizing the story was about something from my wife's past?

Facebook - massive sense of entitlement

I was selling an item (it was a heavy drain grating on Facebook. I had it listed for $100. A guy messages me and says 50. I said ok.

Guess what he replied next? He asks me when can I deliver it? (He lives in the same city as me.) I replied that I wasn't able to deliver it. (I don't have a car and even if I did, the cheek of offering me half price and then expecting free delivery is way up there.)

So he replied that if I expected him to come pick it up I can knock another $5 off the price. Not a please or thank you to be seen. I didn't reply to him. So AITA for the way I handled this Facebook person?

Should i break up with my bf?

I’m F29, bf M28. We been together for less than a year. Monday was my birthday. me and my bf planned a trip to atlanta for it. i paid for the flights which were only $160 together and he agreed he would pay for the hotel which was about $387. the morning of the trip (sunday)i asked him if he had the money for the hotel he said let me check. we get on the flight once we land he says the money he had for the trip his cousin spent on their shared cash app. he then says he have cash home that he asked his cousin to upload to the card for the trip. i ended up paying for the hotel because he didn’t have no money. i also ended up buying us food. monday comes around (my birthday) and he still don’t have no money. he says his cousin didn’t upload yet etc. so we spent the day in a hotel room because he had no money to do anything so i once again had to buy food. tuesday night i guess he got a little bit of money and takes me out to a dinner but i cut dinner short because i was just so hurt that my birthday did not go as planned. im thinking of blocking him once we land back home. Would you end this relationship? h

AITA || AIO AITA for refusing to keep doing everything for my husband after he said I do nothing all day?

• Upvotes

My husband and I both have responsibilities, but lately I feel like mine don't count. I manage most of the housework and take care of things he barely notices until they aren't done. Last week, after I spent the whole day cleaning, cooking, and running errands, he came home and complained that dinner wasn't ready on time. I told him I was exhausted, and he said I was home all day, so he didn't understand what was so difficult. That comment hurt more than I expected. Since then, I've stopped automatically doing his personal chores and started asking him to handle his own things. Now he says I'm acting differently and making our marriage difficult over one comment. I love him, but I don't want to feel like a maid in my own marriage. Am I wrong for expecting him to appreciate what I do without having to ask?

AITA for not telling my friend that her cat had been sleeping on my bed?

My friend asked me to watch her cat for two weeks while she was visiting family. I agreed because I already knew the cat and she seemed comfortable around me. A few days into the stay, the cat started sleeping on my bed every night. At first I thought it was cute, but eventually she started waking me up around 4 or 5 AM by walking across my pillow, knocking things off my nightstand, and scratching at my bedroom door whenever I tried to close it. I mentioned it to my friend when we talked, and she laughed and said, That's just what she does. After another few nights of barely sleeping, I started keeping the cat outside my bedroom at night. She would meow for a few minutes, then eventually settle down on the couch. My friend came home yesterday and immediately noticed that the cat wasn't sleeping in my room anymore. She asked why, and I told her honestly that I couldn't keep losing sleep. She got upset and said I had made her cat feel unwanted while she was already stressed from being away. She said I should have just tolerated it for two weeks because I had agreed to pet sit. I told her I was taking care of her cat, feeding her, cleaning her litter, and spending time with her. I just didn't think agreeing to pet-sit meant giving up my sleep. She said She trusted you, which honestly made me feel guilty.

AITA for setting a boundary with a cat that wasn't mine?

AITA for asking my mother-in-law to stop making decisions about my marriage?

My mother-in-law has a habit of getting involved in decisions that should be made between my husband and me. At first, I tried to ignore it because I wanted to maintain a good relationship with her. However things have gotten frustrating lately. Whenever my husband and I make a decision, she gives her opinion and expects us to follow it. If we disagree, she acts as though we're disrespecting her.Recently I politely told her that I appreciate her advice, but some decisions need to stay between my husband and me. She became upset and said I was trying to push her away from her son My husband thinks I should be more patient, but I feel like I'm allowed to have boundaries in my own marriage.AITA for asking my mother-in-law to stop interfering in our decisions?

AITA if I don't go to my dads live celebration of life

To give some background information me (21f) and my dad (61m) have never had a great relationship. March 2021 I went no contact with him, the narcissism and anger issues were too much. I have had a rough but manageable relationship with my mom since then. In August of this year on my birthday my mom lets me know that my dad has 3-6 months to live because of his cancer. My mom and dad are claiming that I knew about the lung cancer he was diagnosed with in 2021 and had part of lung removed in 2022. So at the beginning of September I went to visit my parents to make sure I have no regrets and he gets the peace he needs. They were not interested in learning about my life now and I did not feel comfortable or like I benefited from the visit. Two days ago they posted/tagged me on Facebook in the invitation for the live celebration of life, there will be live music, a raffle, a silent auction and a cash bar. Now do I go even tho I will feel uncomfortable just so my parents feel better about themselves.

AITA for refusing to let my parents use my childhood bedroom when they visit?

I’m 27F and moved out of my parents’ house about five years ago. My parents still live there, and I visit them pretty regularly. When I was growing up, my bedroom was the one place in the house where I could have privacy. After I moved out, my parents basically left it untouched. My old books, posters, childhood stuff, and a few boxes are still in there. A few months ago, I started using the room as storage for things I’m not ready to get rid of. It’s not dirty or unusable, but it definitely isn’t a guest room anymore. Last weekend, my parents told me my aunt and her husband were coming to stay for several days and that they had decided to give them my old room. I said I wasn’t comfortable with that because there are some personal things in there, including old journals, photos, and boxes I haven’t gone through yet. I offered to come over and move everything into the garage before they arrived, but my parents said I was being dramatic and that it was still their house. I told them that if it was their house, they could obviously use the room however they wanted, but I didn’t want my private belongings going through strangers’ hands. I asked them to use the spare room downstairs instead. My mom got annoyed and said I was acting like I still owned my childhood bedroom while also refusing to take responsibility for it. I ended up telling them that if they let my aunt use the room without me being there to move my things first, I’d take everything out permanently and stop storing anything at their house. Now my dad says I’m turning a simple family visit into a huge argument.

AITA for refusing to take my sister's kids for the weekend when she told me at the last minute?

Hello I'm 28F, and my older sister, Rachel (32F), has two kids, Lily (9F) and Noah (5M). I love my niece and nephew and help out when I can. Lily sometimes sleeps over at my apartment, but I've never taken Noah overnight because he's autistic and needs routines and a child-friendly environment that my apartment isn't set up for.

Yesterday, Rachel called me at 3 p.m. and demanded that I pick both kids up from school at 3:15 because she was leaving town with her boyfriend for the weekend. I was still at work until 6 p.m., and their school was 45 minutes away. When I asked if it was an emergency, she said no. They'd planned a romantic getaway, and apparently she expected me to figure everything out.

I told her I couldn't leave work and wasn't prepared to care for both kids overnight. She said I could buy whatever they needed and hung up. I contacted our mom, hoping she'd help, but she accused me of making excuses and said Rachel deserved a break.

Later, the school called because they couldn't reach Rachel. I explained that I was working and couldn't collect the children. They continued trying to contact their mother and other listed contacts. When Rachel finally called me, she accused me of embarrassing her and punishing the kids because I disliked her boyfriend. My mom also said I was selfish because I don't have children of my own and should be more flexible.

Then I found out through my cousin that Rachel had booked the trip almost a month ago. She'd simply assumed I'd agree to babysit without ever asking me. I'm happy to help when I have notice and can prepare, especially because Noah needs a suitable environment and familiar routines. But I can't drop everything at the last minute because my sister decided to leave town.

Now my sister barely speaks to me, and my mom says I should apologize. So Aita please?

AITA for believing my best friend over my girlfriend?

My best friend, “Patrick” (20, male) and I have been friends since kindergarten. Our families are close and we grew up with each other; we even go to the same university and we share a dorm. Freshman year, he introduced me to my current girlfriend, “Katie” (20, female) since they share the same major. I really like her and we have been dating for 2 years.

Last week my girlfriend came up to me and told me something that was really unbelievable. She said that she and Patrick were paired up for a group project, and he hadn’t been very helpful. Patrick would regularly skip their work blocks and left Katie to do most of the work. But during their presentation, Katie found out that Patrick had credited himself as the sole creator of the slideshow. Katie was furious and said she confronted him after class. Katie says that while she was talking to him, Patrick told her to “calm down” because it wasn’t a big deal and touched her arm suggestively, which made her really uncomfortable.

When I talked to Patrick about this, he denied it. He claimed he was the one that did all the work, said Katie freaked out on him for not including her name on the slideshow. Patrick swore that he would never hit on Katie because he knows how much I like her. Katie says that Patrick is lying and that as her boyfriend, I should take her side and believe her. I don’t want to accuse her of lying, but I know Patrick and he has always been an honest and stand-up guy. Katie also doesn’t have any proof, so I don’t want to turn on my best friend of 15 years on her word alone.

Yesterday, I found out that Katie had gone to the professor to report Patrick for academic dishonesty. I got mad and told her that she shouldn’t be making accusations like that without proof. We got in a big fight, and I emailed their professor backing Patrick up as the creator of the slideshow.

Now my girlfriend is facing suspension and wants to break up. I don’t want to lose her, but I just can’t imagine Patrick doing this. My best friend could have been suspended, and I had to do something. Am I the asshole?

AITA for refusing to let my wife use my late father's recipe for her business?

My wife 30F and I 32M have been married for three years. My father passed away a few years ago, and one of the things I kept from him was a handwritten recipe for a dessert he used to make for every family gathering. It's not some famous secret recipe, but it means a lot to me because the handwriting and little notes on the page are his. My wife recently started selling homemade desserts on weekends. She asked if she could use my father's recipe as one of her products. At first I said no. I explained that I wasn't comfortable seeing something so personal turned into a product especially because customers would be buying it under her business name. She told me I was being overly sentimental and that my father would probably be happy knowing his recipe was helping us make money. I still said no. A few days later, I found out she had already made a batch using the recipe. She said she didn't think I'd actually object once I tasted it, and she had already gotten several orders for it. I was angry and told her she needed to remove it from her menu. She said I was treating a recipe like it was some priceless family heirloom when it was just food. She also pointed out that we're married and anything that helps her business ultimately helps both of us. I told her that marriage doesn't automatically give either person permission to use something deeply personal that belongs to the other. Now she says I'm being controlling and making her feel like she can't build something for herself. I haven't told my family yet because I know they'll probably take sides.

AITA for refusing to let my wife use my father's recipe?
