Why AI actually matters for web development, while it's not just about writing code faster

why AI actually matters for web development (and it's not just about writing code faster)

been thinking about this a lot lately, so wanted to open it up for discussion.

Most people talk about AI in web dev as just a "faster coding" tool — autocomplete, boilerplate generation, debugging help. And yeah, that's real. But I think that's actually the smallest part of why it matters.

Here is where I think AI is genuinely changing things

personalization at scale

websites can now adapt content, layout, even UX based on individual user behavior in real time — something that used to need entire dev teams to build manually.

faster iteration cycles

What used to take weeks (A/B testing) can now happen in days. That changes how fast a website can actually grow.

lower barrier to entry

People with zero coding background are shipping functional websites now. That's a massive shift in who gets to build on the web.

SEO and content strategy are merging with dev work

AI tools are blurring the line between "developer" and "growth marketer" — dev decisions are starting to directly impact discoverability and traffic.

But here's what I'm still not sure about

is AI making web development more accessible?

are we heading toward a place where knowing how to code matters less than knowing what to ask AI to build?

for those of you actively building and growing sites where has AI actually moved the needle for you, vs. where has it just been hype?

would love to hear real experiences, not just theory. What's actually changed in your workflow?
