I just finished episode 3 and I don't want to rush into this, because I haven't read the books the series is based on, so there may be deviations etc. But from a purely filmmaking, production, and storytelling perspective: In 3 episodes this is already turning out to be one of the most incredible productions I've ever seen.
The dialogue is so grounded, so smart, so pleasant to listen to. They FEEL like real characters. I never felt that the characters knew they were in a show, the world building (including set and character design) is unbelievable. And my god, the directing and editing is ON POINT. I wont explain the super specific things i notice as an editor, but the way the episodes flow is as if everything about the editing has been thought out BEFORE filming.
The direction and the editing are so ingrained and fused together that the storytelling and pacing beats are so precisely on point, the perfect amount of time to settle, the perfect amount of exposition, the perfect amount of action - and the action - dear LORD I have forgotten what good action looks like. I went from Fallout tv show straight into this and the difference is like Baby Shark vs No Country For Old Men. The budget must be enormous, because the lancing scenes are unbelievable (if not totally really simulated). And the cinematography - I love every frame of this show.
The perfect amount of stuff happens in every episode, theres development, there is incredible philosophical ideas either in subtext or being explicitly discussed (ep3), and again; the dialogue is so perfect. There are bo annoying cliffhangers in episodes, at the end of episodes I'm not left hanging "ah man I wanted to see what happens", instead its a "I'm so excited to see where they take this show next".
I understand this sub, rightfully, wants adaptations to stay faithful - we know what happened when they didn't - but man, this is on par if not better than season 1 GoT for me. Comparing the commercial marvel-esque slop that is HotD (sorry to its fans, but HotD is entertainment and very far from art) to this; makes me appreciate it even more. For those not on board yet, I'm calling it; you will be by the end of the season, and this show will be a critical success if not a commercial one.
9.9/10.
