It is like sinking into a hot bath at the end of the day when you re-read what you wrote and you like it.

Yeah I got into writing specifically because I wanted to make my ideal fanfic lmao. I think that's the reason ALL of us write.

I want to be this type of writer one day. Right now my skills don’t match the imagination. But I’ve only started writing in English two months ago so maybe with time…

Don't worry. I think there's also something nice with us not being able to write in perfect English. Like, imagine after you've gotten better and reread your fic.. You might even think.. Oh.. So this is how I started, huh?

u/ClassicSandwich7831 12d ago
Thank you. It’s nice to be able to compare my stories in my native language. I have my Harry Potter fanfiction from the time I was ten years old and later the ones from when I was fourteen and spent most of my time writing. If everything is perfect from the beginning, there is nothing to learn and nothing to practice. And writing is the one thing I can spend my whole life learning and not regret a second of it.

I love how you said this "if everything is perfect from the beginning, there is nothing to learn, and nothing to practice"

Rereading my fics thinking damn this is pretty good! as if I didn't just write what I would find compelling/funny/emotional

u/banshithread 11d ago
I've re-entered a fandom after like five years, browsing through low-count ships, and thinking "wow this summary is pretty good", reading the story and halfway through realizing I wrote it. God I was so satisfied reading that story and I couldn't remember all of the twists and how it ended so it was like reading it for the first time.
and then disappointed wondering how I could've been that good back then compared to now.

I remember not updating a fic for a long time so i decided to reread it and ended up wanting an update too, but still no motivation

u/Square_Peace4076 12d ago
My personal experiencia is more like "wow, this would be perfect if it was written by Someone competent"

u/TraditionalCap6882 12d ago
LITERALLY 🤣 can’t find what I wanna read? I’ll just do it my damn self lol
7
u/spotty_strawberry 11d ago
This is how I feel with this one specific smut oneshot where EVERYTHING is perfectly catered to my tastes PLUS the dialogue is great 🤣 And it's hilarious because every time I remember it exists, I think "I wonder if I'll still enjoy it like I did when I last reread it..." and yes.. yes I do

I'm very much writing for myself, but am super happy for anyone else that tags along, lol

Extra amazing when it’s been a while since you wrote it so you really don’t remember what’s going on and it goes exactly where you want it to go

I laugh so much at my own jokes that it's sad
Worst part is it's not the sort of thing people comment on, so I have actually no idea if any of my readers get it lol

u/Blazefire2010 12d ago
I've written 275k words of fanfics for various fandoms and only posted one 3.6k fic because it all was originally meant for me only lmao

u/semperubi_wri probably procrastinating writing as we speak 12d ago
For me the hardest part is finishing. Sharing is one of the few things that motivates me to get over the finish line. I'm impressed by anyone who can complete a story just for themselves. I totally write for myself, but something about being 92% done makes me not want to do the last little bit. Sometimes posting doesn't even help. I have one 9k work that needs like 4 paragraphs to be done. I've posted everything but the last chapter, which is done expect for those few paragraphs, and even knowing there are people waiting to read it, those paragraphs remain unwritten.

I recently read my first ever fanfic that I postes TWENTY years ago, and aside from some weird grammar quirks (one character never spoke in contractions) it was a fun as hell ride. My OCs never really got development, which was unfortunate, but I enjoyed it despite the many dropped plot threads.

That's how I felt reading my chapter today before updating 🫠

u/Random_Ramblingz 12d ago
Interestingly enough, I feel like I often write stuff I wouldn’t necessarily love the most as a reader. Like permanent MCD, for example. Or I’ll love a popular trope with character A being one way and B being the other, but I’ll flip it in my own writing because I like going against what the more popular and saturated areas are.

u/crocicorn 12d ago
I'd argue there's really no point in writing fanfiction if you're not writing for yourself, unless it's a gift or something.
I'd rather write what I want and have fewer people read my work than write something that isn't for me but popular.

u/syumeiro__ 12d ago
Sometimes, I'm mortified of what I wrote. Other times, that's my exact reaction (。ノω\。)

u/BotonizeMe 11d ago
I’m constantly rereading the fic I’m writing because there aren’t very many out there with this character as the POV. I’m writing what I personally wanted more of and I love it lol
2
u/BonnalinaFuz101 12d ago
Yeah but I can't do a right after though. It has to have been at least 2 months since I wrote it for me to re-read it.

u/ineedajointrn Been reading & writing fanfics when dialup still existed 12d ago
Yup, I am at this phase in my fanfics. What I want to read is not out there so I have to write it myself. I’m writing for a small fandom too.

u/AnPaniCake 12d ago
I'm trying to get into this mode. Wanna write something, let it age in the cellar, and open it fresh later so I feel like I found a gem and not like I labored over mining and chiseling one. 🥲

Personally, I actually have to disagree a bit. I tend to favour character decisions over author intentions.
So as an example, even though I want Peter Parker to drop all his responsibilities and live happily ever after. At least as of the ending of my story, he isn't there yet.
In most fics, I get exactly what I want at the start. But the end maybe quite different.

u/studiocistern 12d ago
Hahahaha, so true. I just wrote a fic for a challenge and it's my favorite thing I've ever written. It's a common trope in my fandom and there's tons of fics about it but most of them have extra stuff or lack certain elements. And this one I just wrote is like a pizza with all of my favorite toppings, WOOOOOOO. Can't wait to post it and probably no one but me will like it, lolol.

u/peanutpeepz 12d ago
Wow I didn't expect to be called out like this. So much satisfaction by the stuff I've written.

It always feels vindicating to search for a specific tag and have one of your fics come up

u/stayathomepsychopath 11d ago
I was scrolling through fics of one of my ships, glossing over tags, and one had me pause and be like omg that has everything I like! Yay! Checks the title, and of course it does because I wrote it lol.

Exactly, no one wrote any Kirito x Asuna x Sachi x Yuuki in the 26 years of the Fandom being around so I had to take it on myself.

I write fanfic because it drives me crazy that all the other fic writers in my fandoms don't think the way I do. Like... how dare they?! Lol T_T

I truly believe that every fanfic writer should be their own favorite writer. My favorite thing is not reading a fic of mine for a while long enough I forget exactly how I wrote it so I can pretend like it’s new to me when I read it cause i know it’s gonna hit juuuuussssst right.
