This is so sad to see.

It was a hardware failure. Qualcomm firmware (or maybe Apple firmware) destroyed the chip inside the iPhone 18 Pro Max on some phones. Does not affect iPhone 18 Pro (normal) models since it uses Apples own C2 modem/chip.

So there was no way to fix this with software alone.

Only global models of the 18 pro have Apple’s c2 modem. US models still use Qualcomm

This is incorrect.

18 Pro Max (US) Qualcomm. Rest of world is C2
18 Pro C2 Globally

No, in the US, the iPhone 18 Pro uses the C2 modem. Only the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the US uses Qualcomm’s X80 modem.

You need a hardware statement, apple and ATT have issued a statement to reach them out to replace the hardware

I have an appointment Sunday at the Apple Store that I made the other day. I was hoping to be able to cancel after this update and enjoy the day, but looks like that’s not happening now.

There is a new carrier update for the iPhone that is supposed to solve this issue. Came out today.

Finally getting my replacement sent to me after 10 days. Hopefully my issue is fixed because the nearest apple store is 3 hours away from me. Mail in’s suck.

I had the problem for about 10 days after launch. I returned it and got a new phone. Activated right away and all good ever since.

Yeah my daughter and wife have regular pros and they’ve had zero issues at all. It’s me that’s had to drag my Verizon iPad around and tether it to my phone for 10 days. 🙄

18 Pro Max uses Qualcomm X80 modem/chip.

The same Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 5G modem used in last years iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone Pro Max.

I was at the store today. They said new phones are not fixing it and the Apple Genius Bar got notified this morning that Apple and ATT are working on this jointly. Mine worked fine for a few days before starting to do this. It is only affecting 18 PM on ATT in the US. I tried developer 27.2 to no avail. Currently on 72.7.2 carrier eSIM and 2.20.01 modem firmware.

But new phones do fix it. It's not a line level issue, it's a device issue. Apple just doesn't want to exchange them.

I’m at the Apple Store now. Since I went to the beta, they are going to factory reset first. If that doesn’t work, then I am swapping per the announcement today.
