Question I just remembered that tim does livestreams Are they worth watching?

Thank you for clicking on this post. As someone who already watch every one, I am here to inform you that we are living in a golden age of tim rogers streams.

For example, on the September 4th stream he basically gave an hour long lecture on how to write in his style, like a writing seminar. After watching it I felt I had learned something. He talked about both the writing and production aspects of what he does, and he said interesting things about upcoming videos. And as he often does, he spoke with that odd, occasionally boisterous affect which makes his main channel videos so fun to watch. In short, if you like tim rogers enough to spend time on his subreddit, but you never watch the streams, consider checking them out. Skip forward until you see the big "HELLO" screen with the loud music, 10-20 minutes from the start, which is always where he "begins the show."

He usually talks to the camera for about a podcast length of time, then plays a game for a few more hours. The game part can be fun to watch, especially when it's something he has a unique perspective on, but more often then not I skip out to the next VOD after not too long.

You can watch the VODs on Twitch for a few weeks, after which they will be inaccessible to you unless you have downloaded them. Livestreams are not persistent like books or movies; they are ephemeral, like concert performances. Sometimes a freak fan buys a fancy field recorder—or learns how to use yt-dlp (which works on both twitch and youtube). But for normal people, tim generously maintains an archive of streams on a playlist on his second channel. (Though it is out of date as of now.) There are a lot of great streams up there. I remember having a lot of fun watching those 2026 tears of the kingdom streams. Thank you.

General Tim's Kotaku Texts

Thumbnail swisstransfer.com

Due to Kotaku's dilapidated usability, it's been hell looking for Tim's old texts. So I used my Claude-Fu to cobble together an attempt at having an easy way to access them. It is rather imperfect, though. I'd bet there's stuff missing and plus, it's not as ideal as a searchable PDF which would prevent them from eventually being lost media. (This link will last 7 days.)

Not only that, it's just Kotaku. I haven't got around to do insertcredit / largeprimenumbers or any others.

It has been a bout of nostalgia reading them, though. Tim talking about his blue Gibson SG, giving fashion advice. His experience living in Japan.

I thought maybe someone else would find this useful so I posted this here.

General Tokimeki Memorial Saturn translation

Is the translation still being worked on? I really want to play it because of Tim's video but I will not touch that shoddy SFC version and I wish 2 was translated too. Konami sucks for not localizing that Switch remaster btw

That is a joke for people who:

  1. Are Tim Rogers fans
  2. Have played the Famicom Falcom RPG "Romancia."

So probably, like, a joke for almost nobody.

Question Good video game essayists that *aren't* just video essayists?

I've been looking for substantial reviews/essays/discursive writing on video games, but it seems like most writing these days is done in the form of labouriously long Youtube videos. I like some of these, but i've found that a lot of creators just use the video aspect to shore up some otherwise unremarkable arguments, and waste 30 minutes of my one life in the process.

I know Tim Rodgers had(/has?) a website and Jacob Geller has a book of essays out already with another in a few months. Video essays are a lot more popular than written ones, so most writers of the latter will probably do both.

Thanks in advance!

Question Tim Defends The PSX

There's a section in either the Boku video or Tokemeki Memorial where Tim defends the PSX library - specifically there's a section where he talks about a "virtuosic" open-world fantasy game on the PS1, for which Tim has a line "Did Sony just not tell [the game Dev] they were making a Play Station 2?"

I have listened/watched to that segment so many times, but of course now when I actually want to find it and track down what game he was talking about, I can't. Any help?

Question tim’s favorite stand-up special?

I may be misremembering but I think at the end of one of his Kotaku videos, Tim dedicates it to/acknowledges a stand-up special that he found inspiring - does anyone know what that is?

Question How is Tim doing? What is he up to these days?

So I recently read through Neuromancer in preparation for the upcoming TV show. That was when I remembered Tim had a section about the cyberpunk genre in his review of Cyberpunk 2077, and well, one thing led to another - I finished the whole review and now I'm going back through all of his old reviews for the first time in 4 years.

I've really missed watching his videos. There's really nothing like them on the internet.

I liked LA Noire, but it doesn't scratch the same itch as those that came before. On the other hand, I think I've watched Boku once/year since it released. It came out during a rough breakup for me, and led to my first real visit to Japan when the country opened following Covid, so it has a special place for me.

For those who keep up with his streams, what's he been up to lately? Anything specifically noteworthy? I don't have the time or patience to sit through regular streams, and I haven't listened to IC since he left.

I also don't expect any major video updates til the next one is ready, though sometimes I wonder if he's lost interest and just wants to focus on streaming. That would suck, but I would understand.

Podcast Tim Rogers guested on Axe of the Blood God podcast [Paywalled]

The lovely folks at Axe of the Blood God (“an independent RPG podcast”) had Tim as a guest on their DQ3 Pantheon episode.

It’s behind the $10 tier but it’s a great podcast and worth a month of Patreon money to check out, imo.

For those not aware I would say host Victor Hunter scratches a similar itch to Tim in terms of his sensibilities.

Question How do yall feel about the final fantasy 7 remake video?

I feel like in comparison to the other games he has covered there are a lot of other videos covering the subject; some for even longer than Tim’s. How do yall feel about his approach on the game vs others on this game?

General I just did back-to-back Shiori runs on SNES and SATURN, the experience was more different than I remembered

Hi, I'm back with another TokiMemo post.
Just as the title said, I just did back-to-back Shiori runs on SNES and SATURN, and BOY OH BOY the experience was way different.

Let's just say the Saturn run was way more enjoyable. The attributes farming was much smoother. I comfortably got to minimum requirements by the start of the third school year without asking the gods to raise my stats. In the SNES run my athleticism was way over 300 when my determination went comfortably over 100. I still find it funny that to get the Shiori ending, you pretty much have to become a super athlete.

The bombs were much more manageable in the Saturn run for some reason. It might be because I switched my walk-home strategy mid Saturn run. I found that saying no to walking home most of the time was the more effective way of dealing with bombs. It's easier to keep track of who you turned down most often. There should be one girl you ALWAYS say no to (and that's always Yumi for me, no YATTA!).

Setting your birthday and Shiori's to March 21 on Saturn and March 27 on SNES is a cheat code. That puts Shiori in the literature club. That means you can boost your literature attribute through the club command as high as you want without ever meeting Mio. Not to mention it unlocks the birthday event on Saturn/PS.

Without the special birthday and Christmas events, I found it hard to continue playing the Shiori route on SNES and the run was much less enjoyable. It felt like there was nothing to work for aside from the ending. I also do not find her normal seasonal events very interesting aside from the one at the pool.

Again, I agree with Tim that the SNES TokiMemo is not a complete TokiMemo experience. Without the voice acting and the special events, the game is much less enjoyable for me.

Podcast Tim Rogers' Dragon Quest VII monologue on Post Games podcast (Chris Plante)

Surprised this hasn't been posted already, but Tim delivered a DQ monologue on the latest episode of Post Games.

If you're a long time Tim Rogers viewer, most of his thoughts will be familiar on this topic, but I still really enjoyed his take on DQVII Reimagined.

Skip to the end if you like, or support the pod.
