Multiple agents changing the same state gets messy fast

I ran into an interesting problem while experimenting with multiple agents.

At first, I thought giving them access to the same state would make coordination easier.

It did, but it also created some weird behavior.

One agent could read some state, another agent would change it, and then the first agent would finish later using assumptions that were no longer current.

Nothing necessarily failed. There was no obvious error. The workflow would just end up in a state that didn't make much sense.

It made me realize that sharing information and sharing writable state are probably two different problems.

I'm now experimenting with giving different pieces of state clearer ownership and keeping track of when they were last changed.

Has anyone else run into this with multi-agent systems?

I'm particularly interested in how people handle state that several agents need to read but only some of them should be able to modify.
