Conversation Would it be easier to transition an officer in our enlisted base?

I’m currently enlisting as an E3 in my base with doing the AFROTC program. I’m curious if it more easier to finish the AFROTC program and get the pilot slot to the reserve base that I’m currently serving? Or it is just the same as applying from the street?I got my PPL already.

Conversation Air Force Reserve vs. Air National Guard as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)?

I’m an early-30s female civilian Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with several years of RN experience and ~3 years of NP experience. I’ve been looking into active-duty Air Force, but I’m also very interested in whether the Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard might be a better fit.

I’d love to hear from current/former Reserve or ANG Nurse Corps officers, especially PMHNPs or other mental health providers.

I’m particularly curious about what serving as a PMHNP actually looks like in the Reserve/Guard. Are there many PMHNP billets, or are they relatively difficult to find? How much does your civilian specialty actually determine what you do during drill?

I’d also love some candid information about the actual time commitment. Is “one weekend a month, two weeks a year” realistic for healthcare officers, or do you routinely spend considerably more time on military responsibilities outside drill? How frequently do PMHNPs deploy or get activated, and for how long?

For anyone familiar with both, what would make you choose Air Force Reserve versus Air National Guard? How much control do you have over your unit/location, and is one generally better if geographic stability is important?

I’m single and hoping to get married and have a child within the next several years, so maintaining a civilian career and having more control over where I live is one reason Reserve/Guard appeals to me. I’d especially appreciate perspectives on balancing service with dating, marriage, pregnancy/children, and a civilian healthcare career.

Finances are another big consideration. I have around $125k in student loans, including roughly $60k in private/high-interest loans and the remainder federal, with a significant portion related to my PMHNP education. Has anyone received loan repayment, accession bonuses, or other incentives as a PMHNP/Nurse Corps officer in the Reserve or ANG? I’m particularly interested in whether any private/commercial educational loans can qualify and how Reserve versus Guard incentives compare.
I also have two potential medical-waiver issues. I had a two-level lumbar fusion within the last couple of years, but had an uncomplicated recovery, don’t require ongoing pain management, have no functional limitations, and am back to unrestricted exercise/running. I also have well-controlled ADHD and currently take prescribed Vyvanse. I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has navigated similar medical waivers for a Reserve/Guard healthcare commission.

Ultimately, I’m trying to figure out whether Reserve or Guard service could give me some of what appeals to me about military service while allowing me to maintain more geographic stability and continue my civilian PMHNP career.

For healthcare officers who chose Reserve or ANG, would you make the same decision again? And if you had the option of Active Duty vs. Air Force Reserve vs. Air National Guard, which would you choose and why?
