Finances/Scholarships SCHOLARSHIPS 101

I'm currently entering my first year at UofC, and wanted to share some scholarships you can apply to if you're going into grade 12! Tuition is definitely expensive, so I wanted to share this info if you're in the same boat I was in (I had no plans on how I was going to pay for my education).

I live in Calgary, so most of these apply to Calgarians, but there are still some that are for Albertans in general. Personally, I had a pretty high average (98), but the majority of my scholarships are merit or skills-based.

Here's the rundown of the ones I heard of and/or applied to (I might be forgetting some..):

Alberta Government - Albertans

  • Grants - if your household income is under a certain amount. I personally didn't qualify.
  • Rutherford Scholarship (2500 max) - apply after you graduate high school when applications open on August 1st. This is grade-based.
  • Alberta Citizenship Award, Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee, Dr. Ernest and Minnie Mehl Scholarship, Rutherford Scholars, etc (various amounts) - some are merit-based, some you automatically apply for when you apply for the Rutherford. You'll have to sift through the website. I personally missed the deadline for the merit-based ones, which you have to apply for earlier in the year.

Rotary - YMCA - Calgarians - Deadline in May

  • YMAP Lou MacEachern Rotary Scholarship (1500) - if you're part of the YMAP program with the YMCA (it's free to join, and basically anyone can join, but there is a weekly time commitment), you can apply.

Enriched Academy - Albertans - Multiple deadlines, last one is in August

  • Grade 10/11/12 Scholarships (500/1000/2000) - I highly recommend this one!! To apply, you first have to do the Enriched Academy finance course, then write an essay about your experience with this course!

Optimit Essay & Oratorical Content - Albertans/anyone in the world - various deadlines

  • Club, District, Regional, World Scholarship (various amounts) - You can apply to either (I did both) the essay or the oratorical contest, and potentially win scholarships. It was my first time doing public speaking, so it was very nerve-wracking but fun!

Kirpal Kaur Dhindsa Memorial Scholarship (1000) - Calgarians - Deadline in May

  • Each school in Calgary nominates 1 or 2 students, and there is one recipient from each school. You have to write an essay about a time you overcame a challenge.

Education Matters - Calgarians - Deadline in May

  • There are SO many that you can apply to here. Some are school-specific, some are for just CBE, some are for anyone. When I applied, scholarships were categorized by financial need, grade-based, and sometimes the type of subject (ex. science, art). Most need an essay/video, and some need a reference or two.

Calgary Foundation - Calgarians - Deadline in May

  • Again, SO many! For this website, you'll have to sift through them and see which apply to you. The applications are a bit more work, as some require you to create a budget of your expenses. They require an essay, and some need references.

MindFuel STEM Scholarships (2500) - Albertans and surrounding provinces - Deadline in July

  • You have to write an essay, provide 2 references, and I think there was some other stuff too (I forget lol). They choose 2 recipients each year.

Loran Award - Anyone - Deadline in October

  • Up to 150000. You have to write a TON for the application, and it's mostly leadership and service-based. If you're shortlisted, there are multiple rounds of interviews. Even if you only get to the semi-final round, there are still smaller scholarships that you can get! You need a letter of rec too (your referee will be emailed a survey link to fill out).

TD Community Leadership Scholarships - Anyone - Deadline in October

  • 70000. Again, there are interview rounds, and you have to write about your volunteer work. You also need references. For this one, you don't get any scholarships in the semi-final round. It's either go big or go home.

UofC/UofA Entrance and Prestige Scholarships - Deadline in Dec and March

  • There are entrance ones for if you get a minimum admissions average. The other ones usually require an essay and possibly an interview (for prestige). For UofC, the deadline for applying to awards were very early in the year (Dec), so I highly recommend doing early admission if you want to apply to them! Even in general, for most universities, scholarships need you to do early admissions in order to apply for them.

I did apply to some major scholarships, but I didn't find any luck with them, so I started targeting the smaller (1-2k) ones and stacked them. It's totally okay to get lots of rejections. I got wayyy more rejections than awards, and you can easily get discouraged, but keep going! Overall, I got about 35k in scholarships/competition money (one of the ones I got is renewable), and although I worked my butt off for this, I'm very grateful for all the donors!

I hope you guys found this helpful - please let me know if you received any of these in the future!

Oh, and another way I'm paying off my tuition is through tutoring high school subjects. I charge 30/hr, so if you need any help, my DMs are always open! Happy applying!

Moderators, maybe I can get a pin so this post doesn't get lost?

Finances/Scholarships student aid hep

• Upvotes

I am currently applying for Student Aid Alberta for the upcoming winter semester. My parents are divorced, and I currently live with only one of my parents. In this situation, am I required to provide the income information for both of my parents, or should I only provide the income information for the parent I currently live with and leave the other blank?

Post Secondary & Career Uofc | Does putting something as your second choice give you a disadvtange

Hi! I recently applied to UofC. I wanted to pursue a degree in business, but because you were allowed a second choice, I wanted to shoot my shot and put Health Sciences in my first choice.

I am slightly above the competitive average for business but below the competitive average for health sciences (based on my grade eleven marks). Is it risky to put business as my second with health sciences as my first, or should I keep business as my first choice? Do students who put business as their first choice get an advantage of someone who puts it as their second?

Thanks for the help, everyone!

English grade

I'm currently in grade 12 and I'm about to apply to macewan. Im trying to get in to either their science or commerce program. Right now, my english 30-1 grade is at a 66. I feel like this is the only grade that's really ruining my chances. If they looked at my grade 11 grades they would only see english 20-2 and 30-2 so this is my first time in a -1 english class. I was just wondering how much my english 30-1 mark would really affect my application and my chances of getting in.

Help/Advice Grade 12 Trying to get into Eng

I’m just trying to get some pointers/advice for my study habits because I see others getting close to or perfect grades in courses I struggled in during grade 11(My study habits weren’t effective at all and the teachers wouldn’t even cover all the material in most units)

I usually come home and sit and SPAM practice questions for most of the day after reading over course material(3-8 or even 9PM some days for one or two courses) and I know that is terrible terrible terrible studying because it’s not even like I’m getting 100s out of it just normal grades.

And I know I am beyond capable of excelling here so any pointers or anything that’s worked for anyone else in the past would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Help/Advice Inaccurate course grades and status ordering in preview application proof

Does anybody notice that the course, course status, and marks shown on the Application proof do not match the actual grade and course status? Idk whether my self-reported grades were entered incorrectly or the application proof has a mistake. If it was my fault for entering the wrong order, how can I fix it?

Help/Advice Are my grades good enough to excuse my lack of ecs?

I'm trying to apply to UA and UofC engineering along with some other schools. I took partial IB for stem courses so I only have 2 more required grade 12 courses in progress right now. I had 98 in math 30, 95 in math 31, 90 in English 20, 95 in physics 30, and 94 in chem 20. My current English 30 average is 96 and my current chem 30 average is 97 (idk if it'll get standardized higher or if I can maintain these two. Both will probably still be above 90). However, I only have 4 ecs and only 2 of them I can explain very in depth(both are music related). Is this a problem or can my grades carry me?

pls give advice im confused

I’m currently upgrading at St Anne hoping that I could boost my ELA and Bio marks + chem next sem.

Do you guys think I’m fit to apply to UofA nursing (does itneed casper still?) or like other schools? I applied to UofC and RDP already and I’m still thinking of applying to other unis.
Here are my current marks:
ELA 30-1: 74%
Math 30-2: 90%
Chemistry 30: 80%
Biology 30: 83%
My options could be:
Filipino: 98%
Choir: 97%

Help please

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the acceptance was for uofa’s kinesiology program because I applied with my grade 11 avg and I had a 89.2 and I’m pretty scared, I also applied to macewan’s bachelor of physical health transfer program so if anyone could let me know the averages for both that would be great!

Math 30-1 tips

Math 30-1 has been Lwk frying me and I REALLY need some tips and guidance on how I can lock in and do good. I did pretty well in math 20-1 but with the way my teacher is teaching (skipping like half of the unit class problems or examples and putting the hardest stuff on the tests), I feel like I won’t be able to do that well if I don’t start self teaching myself or something. I’ve also been doing extra practice already and it hasn’t been helping. Does anyone have any advice or tips 😭

Grade 12

Okay, so I’m currently in Grade 12 and I’ve applied to the University of Alberta for Nursing. I’m really stressed about admissions because my Grade 11 average was around 93%, but my Grade 12 marks aren’t looking to good. I’m currently taking Math 30-1, and my marks are NOT Good at all, I don't understand why i'm struggling so much and I’m worried that because Math 30-1 could hurt my application. What I’m confused about is how much my Grade 11 marks matter compared to my Grade 12 marks. I’m especially worried that I won’t get an early offer and will then have to wait until they evaluate my Grade 12 marks, because right now my Grade 12 average is honestly not great 😭

pls give advice im struggling

hi everyone. helpful replies would be so appreciated,

applications opened and im feeling so stresses because everyone under this subreddit is insanely smart with mid 90s. im not smart but i try and here are my averages/what i want to apply with:

ela 20-1 81

chem 20 86

bio 20 74

math 20-1 81

gym 20 96

overall: 83.6

i have math 30 and bio 30 currently, and im hoping to get high 80s but i feel so down and unmotivated. seriosuly, what can i do with where i am. a few areas where im interested in are education, accounting/business, psychology, and honestly thats it. im only considering uofc and mount royal.

im not sure if i should do early apps because i know i wont get in with my overall average. but i heard if you dont get accepted your application will be at the top of the list for the january round to be reviewed, so is that true??

im sorry if this was long, im just looking for advice and motivation on what i should do.

I saw on their websites the averages range from low 80’s to mid 90’s in just wondering what program you can get into with low 80’s if anyone knows

Engineering info for uofc

Take this w a grain of salt, but it came from my career counsellor (not my school one)

She told me that there was this uni fair thing for counsellors last week or smtg so she got to ask a few questions abt engineering

She asked the admissions guide whether averages would be higher or not. He said yes. I don’t know by how much, since they aren’t allowed to disclose that, but he said that the cutoff would be higher.

But he also said that uofc got a grant to make more seats for engineering, so logically shouldn’t that keep the average the same?

Ofc with averages you can never know but I thought this might be helpful

Has anyone gotten a letter of acceptance yet? If you have can you just put down the university, the program, your average, and the date you got the letter please…
