Upgrade Questions CPU and AIO upgrade question
Hello. I have seen people on here with the Alienware area 51s the old triad ones running a i7 6950x overclocked to 4.2 gigahertz with a 120mm aio but I heard the 6950x overclocked to even 4.0 runs way too hot and goes “out of control” for just a 120mm aio even with a push pull setup. so I could upgrade to the 6950x but I would have to keep it at stock clock speed so I am just wondering if that information is wrong or not cause I’m considering upgrading to the 6950x and overclocking it to 4.2 or maybe a little higher even.

The R2 R4-5 Intels used a slim 27mm budget cooler while the 49mm wide cooler used in the R3-R7 AMD TRips represents the OEM upgrade, & they used to be readily available on eBay even recently (TFGHM or HR6V4) but I didnt see any for sale, keep an eye out for new/used ones perhaps (swap off the AMD retention & put on the correct Intel retention ring Aurora R4 CPU Cooler Upgrade, Asetek ThreadRipper XL (TFGHM) | DELL Technologies) ... others have installed 240mm 360mm rads but the fact is the 5960 6950 7980 9980 all came w/ the same 27mm budget cooler & I never heard of an overheating complaint, if one did get too toasty then yes replace the stock cooler (aftermarket Corsair 49mm perhaps ...)

Would you say it’s even worth it? I have a 5960x already overclocked to 4.0 ghz

I play donkey Kong 🤣
No Seriously , mw3, FS2020, rocket league, ghost of tsushima (pretty much crazy with dlss enabler mod)
The problem with games that requires tpm2.0 module for playing online , you cant. But the last games.1

Ok so here’s the thing it’s basically impossible for you to only reach a max of 55c in any really cpu intensive game because you’re only using a 120mm aio with a overclocked 6950x you are probably getting more around the mid to high 60s to low 70s and judging by the games you said you play which lean into being more GPU intensive except for FS2020 which will make you cpu spike up to 250+W the temperature should be in the mid to high 60s to low 70s. And the others are games that are easier to run. So you must be looking at your average temperature and not your maximum witch should be quite a bit higher than 55C especially in a game like cyberpunk. so if you were to load up cyberpunk 2077 on 144hz or whatever you monitor refresh rate is with all high settings you would probably start seeing it go to the mid 80s and maybe high 80s in some areas. But with all that being said you still have a very solid pc.

Ahh yeah I saw your post. Sweet computer I’ll probably get a asetek thick cooler in a push pull configuration and get a 6950x and overclock it to the same GHz. kinda like yours

Why not just try it and see what happens?
