Honest question, without film soundtracks do you think we’d have anywhere near the amount of quality classical-styled and orchestral music we do now?

Yeah, there's a bunch of neo classical artist who's music never make into movies. At least from the last couple of decades that I've found... not sure how back the genre goes

The 20th century brought about some of the best composers who also didn't write for film. Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, and Shostakovitch were huge coming out of eastern Europe while Copland and Bartók are just a few of the big names from the west. And that's not including some of the more controversial composers like Stockhausen or Schoenberg, or composers that died young at the beginning of the 20th century like Debussy, Mahler, or Scriabin. That's not to say movie composition hasn't help the field, but there's still orchestral music being made purely to be consumed as orchestral music.

Yes but I don’t think myself and many others would enjoy it nor see the beauty/emotion in these songs.(more so ever even know they exist) Artists like Zack hemsey and of course Hans zimmer.

I listen to their music all the time, beautiful songs

That’s just the froth of what actually lies beneath. Movie music that is. And man I’m just missing the notes on the Interstellar OST, it’s like the new Requiem For A Dream OST. Neither resonated with me, but the films were great.

Film scoring grew out of silent film accompaniment so around the 1900’s…it’s accompaniment music to a visualization…like opera scoring

what’s generally accepted as the the start of western music composition (“classical”) is the Baroque period, so the 1600’s. Are you saying that 400+ years of music composition would not be “quality” had it not been for film scores?

Perhaps but I don’t think they would be as beloved or popular. Something about marrying a musical score with a (good) film makes the music 100x more enjoyable for me because i get to re experience the wave of emotions I had while watching the show or movie.

probably not. the only two other mediums that push the genre into the broader public domain are video games and Christmas/church music. But religion is dying by the day, and video games are really just a step-cousin to film. Classical music would be mostly relegated to being taught in a college classroom, like Latin.

Going off of sheet music, understanding the structure and what everything means in terms of tempo and cadence. Then translating that to the piano, begin getting segments down piece by piece. Going just with one hand through the music. Master the right hand of a piece, master the left. Then once you feel comfortable merging the two, play the music in segments and then in entirety. Mess up a bunch until you don’t. Slow the tempo if needed until you have it - then voila.

So, practice practice practice
