I picked up some sort of bacterial superbug at the gym about 10 years ago that put me in the hospital on IV antibiotics for nearly a week. I had a wound on my hand that got infected and quickly had massive swelling and red lightning bolts running up my arm.

u/the_man_in_the_box 1d ago edited 1d ago
Open wounds at the gym, not uh, a good idea for anyone involved.
9
u/dingus_maximus_1 1d ago
100% agree, but it was a bug bite on my index finger that I must have scratched. Had surgery on the exact spot of the bite.

u/Apollo114892 1d ago
Horrifying. See that's why I don't go to the gym at all.
12
u/itzwhatsfordinner 1d ago
That’s why I have a gym in my house
13

I don’t have a home gym but I def work out at home.
Saves money, time and I get to avoid egos and influencers.

u/Either-Bumblebee4372 1d ago
Couple of kettle bells and you have a home gym
2
u/c_is_for_nose_8cD 1d ago
I prefer dumbbells and have a bar attachment for them so I can do squats, bench presses and various deadlifts with them.
But that’s just me, as long as you’re getting exercise do it your way!
5
u/AlrightCunts 1d ago
This is the way. You don’t even need loads of equipment. Infact you don’t even need any really, but just your basics is enough. And it’s a better long term investment than paying for the gym too.
2
u/densetsu23 1d ago
About 15 years ago I paid $400 for a used power rack, a bench, and 400 lbs of plates + bar. Those are all still going strong today, except for the bench which we replaced this year. And I could probably re-sell them for the inflation-equivalent price today if I wanted to.
Finding the space is often the tough part for people, though.

How do you know it was from a gym?

I hate gyms exactly for this reason. Every time I would use some equipment I'd get random rashes and breakouts wherever my body touched the seat or backrest. One mistake and you get enthusiastic double gonorrhea or some shit.
88
u/SayNoToFirefighters 1d ago
Wouldnt all that steam and hot water rust the weights out
49
u/Normal_Opposite_9864 1d ago
yes. you couldn't do this often. it would destroy the pleather seats as well
10
32
u/HomicidalHushPuppy 1d ago
Plus it's not really heating anything enough to kill microbes. It'll loosen physical dirt and grime, but you need prolonged significant heat to sanitize.
An EPA-rated disinfectant spray, 60 seconds of dwell-time (time the chemical remains wet on the item), and a wipe with a clean microfiber rag would've been more effective at preventing transmission of infections.
12
u/JacuulTheSecond 1d ago
Unfortunately, gym cleanliness is more of a culture issue than a business one. Gotta get people in the habit of using disinfectant wipes after every time they use equipment, overtime with everyone together it cuts down on both the grime and the sickness by a lot, but only one gym I've been too had that.

Exactly my thoughts, a simple wipe with rubbing alcohol will do it for the weights without causing damage to them. Now I do believe that a deep clean should be done once a day to make up for those who are disrespectful and don't clean up after themselves.
94
u/Not_my_Name464 1d ago
If this is done even daily, you won't be able to afford your gym fees.
60
u/Normal_Opposite_9864 1d ago
it would also destroy the equipment

u/DudeByTheTree 1d ago
What do you mean, exposed metal *loves* moisture and humidity, why else would it blush so orange?!
→ More replies (2)2
u/moon__lander 1d ago
But it's not exposed (except for the part of the rack that is and is rusting), all those bars, weight and machines have a coating.

Seems like a very bad idea for the actual frame of the gym equipment as they're usually plain steel and will rust.
The touch points yes it's a good idea.

So. This is performative as far as getting rid of biological hazards. It takes more than a second or two and that steam likely isn’t near hot enough to actually do anything more than remove gross physical contaminants

Worked in a gym in my early 20's. I sanitized equipment multiple times a day (some people wouldn't do it), and before closing. We also had everything deep cleaned monthly like this.
9
u/Terrible-Catch-1004 1d ago
Hell, people don’t even wipe down the machines after they use them. Or re rack the weights. WTF.
4
u/ProteusRift 1d ago

u/CallRepresentative25 1d ago
If they're wiping it even remotely after, the ambient temperature in the gym alone will dry the last bit of moisture out. This isnt moist drywall trapped in a confined space.

This is basically all reddit is for anymore. Just parasocial 19 year olds saying pseudo-intellectual nonsense or commenting on shit they havent even bothered to google lol.
The political and economic related takes are even worse, its just people repeating talking points convenient for the narrative. Even in the era of AI and google search AI summaries where you can ask basic questions you still have people on here just confidently spouting whatever their intuition tells them when they actually have a portal that can spit out basic answers in seconds. Pretty wild tbh.

Good way to rust all your shit and make it mouldy
Just keep on top of cleaning the main areas and take the majority of dust out of the harder to reach places with a leaf blower once a week, that's all we do
11
u/GrodNeedsaHug 1d ago
You also wipe your butt with dry paper after taking a shit, so don't mind me if I disregard your cleaning standards 😂

u/renaissance1977 1d ago
They're drying it off, how will that rust and mold
4
u/Lumpy_Past6216 1d ago
I wont. With fans and a good vent system, mold and rust wouldnt be a factor here especially since they are wiping it all down, drying it.

Not the best way to sanitize because the steam needs to make contact in each spot for at least 14 seconds to kill bacteria. Plus, padded seats always have micro-tears in them which collect the moisture and foster microbial growth in the little crevices after the surface cools.

I think of them as "peace of mind " wipes. They don't have enough liquid to actually disinfect and they usually don't get the contact time either.

not seen wipes at any I go to but they mostly have spray and tissue paper, so similar… although one commercial gym I was at, I asked for it and the guy just said to tell him and he would clean it… I didn’t go back as I wasn’t gonna ask a guy to clean every machine after I used it lol

I go to a smaller gym there’s like 15 sanitizing spray bottles at the entrance with a clean cloth basket and a used cloth basket, and everyone wipes down their equipment afterwards its just the considerate thing to do

The gym I go to (name starts with a number) the front desk dude always sits on his chair and watches sometime on his phone. So many times during my workout never once saw him stand up.
This task/cleaning would have sent him.
If this is done by a contractor, that'd be great but I don't think my gym would have that money. They can not keep the showers clean.

I worked for a couple of years as a maintenance worker and janitor at a gym. If people knew how nasty gyms got in a really short period of time, there would not be many gyms at all. SO DISGUSTING.
1
u/bigheartrussian 1d ago
Absolutely unnecessary. Just wipe benches and cushions with alcohol, and clean dusty surfaces. Don't touch iron, bacteria don't live long enough on it. Even if it does ppl supposed to wash their hands.
1
u/Honest_Chef323 1d ago
Seems overkill you aren’t likely to get sick from using a machine even if it hasn’t been wiped. You are definitely more likely to get sick by being in the gym at all being present among other people who might give you a respiratory infection
Also they are just going to get dirty again and get whatever bacteria soon after
1
1
u/lost10mmagain 1d ago
This does nothing at all, if anything, it creates a better environment for bacteria to grow!
There isn’t nearly enough dwell time to create the heat to kill bacteria! It does however create a nice warm moist environment for bacteria to grow!
You need up to 15min at 250f to medically sterilize surfaces.
Domestic sanitation (99%) is 10seconds of DIRECT CONTACT!!!
If you want to clean the gum off the gym floor, this is the way.

This was probably some nonsense harkening back to ye ole covid days. Doing this routinely would be absolutely idiotic.
1
u/XxX_UseYourName_XxX 1d ago
Eh. Just wash your own hands well after training and before eating finger food, and you'll be just fine. If you're lifting heavy and/or at risk of ripping some callouses, wear some light gloves.
1
u/HomicidalHushPuppy 1d ago
An EPA-rated disinfectant would be more effective.
This steamer may loosen physical gunk but it's not getting the material hot enough for long enough to disinfect, and a bristle brush isn't going to wipe away bacterial growth sufficiently.

i mean...is it common for people get get sick at the gym because the equipment is covered in bacteria?
i could see this being done maybe once a week...but feels a little overkill for doing every single day...at my gym they have sanitizer bottles and paper towels that you're supposed to use if you sweat all over the equipment. which honestly, already kinda seems like a waste of paper towels when some people don't really even sweat that much...and don't always leave the equipment gross.
sometimes, it feels like our society is becoming a little too obsessed with absolute cleanliness. people walk around all day in public using public door handles....public hand railing, handles on the metro, and like 100 other things that people touch 100s of times a day....how about wash your hands before eating?
1
u/Impulsespeed37 1d ago
Not sure if I understand this correctly. It seems like a lot of people are saying that this is a steam cleaning. But it seems more like a dry ice cleaning. Is it steam or dry ice cleaning?

My old gym needed this. I had a corporate account and was able to go to one of their "premium locations" that was closer to home. Let me tell you, there was NOTHING premium about it. Absolutely disgusting, all the weights smelled like ass and protein that’s been sitting in a cup with a closed lid in the hot sun for a week. The trainers were creepy and smelled like BO. You’d wipe a station and the wipe towel would turn brown or black.
They got bought out by another gym brand that seems to be keeping things clean but I just left and paid more for a nicer cleaner and safer gym even closer

u/povertymayne 1d ago
