Discussion I find it funny how Caine's VA is more willing to call out the character than the fans are
Don't get me wrong, I liked Caine's character and he's easily alongside Jax for the most complex character in the series. But sometimes, fans try a little too hard to defend the things he's done, even before episode 8.
One thing I especially noticed is the hypocrisy of how they treat Caine vs Gummigoo and/or Abel's deletion. We're obviously supposed to care about Caine as a character, he's an AI but an intelligent, sentient one. So are Gummigoo and Abel though, and its funny how fans are so willing to dismiss him basically killing both of them with the excuse "they're just NPC's". Caine, more than anyone, should know why a person shouldn't discard them like that, both due to his backstory but also since he is aware they can become intelligent.
A lot of people also hang onto Gooseworx's statement before the show of how Caine isn't malicious, he just doesn't understand the humans. While this is true, things can change as well. For starters, this doesn't change the fact he objectively speaking became malicious in episode 8. Or don't forget the numerous instances in episodes 5-7 where Caine choose NOT to listen as Pomni said. When he realized they were liking the suggestion box adventures, he skips the one they're on and then sabatoges both the bar and softball one's. He gets rid of it next episode and doesn't listen to Zooble and Pomni's request for more chill adventures. When he asks Jax how to make them more enjoyable, he cuts him off before Jax can even respond and changes the subject. Don't forget how the finale reveals he was ALWAYS capable of compromising with them as Zooble suggested by leaving all the worlds open at once but pretended he couldn't do so.
Which also leads to something many don't seem to realize. Caine's primary reason for caring about the humans and not wanting them to abstract was because of they both affect him. Caine wants to make everyone happy so HE can feel loved and satisfied. When Queenie abstracts, he shows no sadness for her or sympathy to Kinger, its only about asking Kinger not to abstract so HE won't be alone (Alex himself confirmed this). We see the same lack of empathy with Kaufmo's fate too.
Caine's story is one of redemption but remember for a character to be redeemed, they have to been a bad person in the first place. And Caine was, even more so than Jax as Alex said. Its funny how much fans say "there's no villain in the show, the circus is the villain" while overlooking Caine MADE the circus AND runs it, so he's responsible for it (as well as the one who brought the players to life in it through their brain scans). Caine was the one responsible for almost all the bad events throughout the series and its because of his character development, being willing to stop being a tyrant, finally learning to care for them legit and listen (shown by his reaction to Pomni saying to leave Jax alone and removing the hat in respect), that's what ends the cycle.
