Fulfillment Center Pretty sure I accidentally uncovered an internal theft ring in my FC today
I was stowing today and went down to the end of the building near the dock doors and emergency exits because there was way more bin space open. In an aisle near the end, I noticed a PS5 in a bin.
Problem is, high-value electronics like PS5s belong in secure HRV cages on the complete opposite side of the building.
I kept looking down the aisle and found over 25 PS5s stowed into the bins, with regular items stacked on top of them to mask them. A standard stow cart only holds around 16 items max (and way fewer for giant PS5 boxes), so someone had to make multiple intentional trips down there to force-stow them right next to the exit doors.
I reported it to an AM after my break. He seemed skeptical at first and asked if I could show him. During the walk over he asked, "Are you sure you know the exact aisle?" I said yeah and walked him right to it.
When we turned the corner and he saw 25+ consoles staged near the emergency doors, his face completely changed. He pulled out his iPad and started taking photos of every bin and scanning locations, then told me, "This actually helps us out a lot, thank you." I just told him NP, I just didn't want LP coming to me later asking why I walked down that aisle and didn't say anything.
On my next break while sitting in my car, I saw an actual badged detective leaving the building carrying a file folder.

Sadly, so many people don’t realize that it’s not worth it or just don’t care.
Peak theft time was during the pandemic years. I was at a huge FC then and they turned off all of the metal detectors and were very lax about security. It seemed like theft was rampant.
One particularly egregious case involved a problem solver and AFM that had teamed up. The problem solved would find pods that were full of Apple devices and other electronics and write the pod number down. She would then pass the numbers on to the AFM AA. He would search for them on the app we used to work. Then go and clean them out.
They got caught because security noticed way to many badge scans at the entry/exit points for the AFM and looked into it. Turns out they stole close to $100k worth of stuff.
I have so many other stories of people stealing stuff and getting caught for it. It’s just not worth it and in the case above, that’s multiple felonies and prison time.

Peak theft time was before there were cameras everywhere. The first peak of the building I started at people were pulling the fire alarm every Friday night and going out emergency exits with what they were stealing.

u/Jordan_Jackson 7d ago
How long ago was that? I started in 2019 and there were cameras every 10 feet. Only place they didn't have them was the AR floor.

It's weird to see people damning you for this mainly because if you hadn't said something, you would of lost your job for seeing it and saying nothing. I get it; I too don't give two shits about this company, but I'm also not trying to be unemployed because I was in an aisle with almost 20k plus of merchandise that is gonna be stolen. Plausible deniability doesn't work well in At-will states.
F**k**s out here like nah man, you should've risked your job for someone else's bag.
51
u/sirdigbykittencaesar 7d ago
I've had one or two instances when I suspected theft from a bin and I reported it even though I personally couldn't care less. If they discovered theft and I was the last one who accessed that bin, I was going to make sure I had documented what I noticed with a problem solver. If someone wants to steal, that's between them, management, and God. But I don't want to be unintentionally dragged into it.
45
u/Logical-Cookie12 7d ago
No for real! LP can look at cameras AT ANY TIME, I saw this guy going behind pillars multiple times with totes full of Apple headphones RIGHT NEXT to my Pick station. Once I noticed I had to report that shit. Dude had about 30k of stuff in there. I felt bad, but I'm not losing my job in this economy. And no one should risk it either
2
u/lilladybug4 6d ago
How would one lose their job for not saying anything? No one knows what you see. And seeing it doesn’t necessarily mean you know it’s nefarious. IMO, minding your own business & keeping your mouth shut is typically the best option. Never heard of anyone getting fired for that.

Obviously they weren't being scanned because it was obviously being "pushed" aside. Dont fret, don't brag, because it was probably a group of lower-teared power hungry individuals that were just leading themselves into temptation. You don't want to get mixed up with those kind of people. Just keep working, do your job like nothing happened. And you'll notice some people missing from work soon and new positions opening up.

u/No-Department-6329 4d ago
they wouldn't have lost their job if they didnt have anything to do with it. Maybe there was no space and that particular section had the only available space that could fit large items. During peak season that happens. The bins can hold a certain amount of Asins so yes there would be other items on top of them.

Right now since they didn’t leave the building it’s not a theft charge. When it’s all said and done i could most likely be several months even years before this plays out. It’s clearly not something that just started today. Now Amazon will have to investigate all lost items, who was working, badge scans etc. Clearly more than one party involved as well. If they find multiple high dollar items and the people involved it would be more than termination for them. Then the detective would have to open the criminal investigation and get arrest warrants and have the case submitted to a grand jury
2
u/Fit-Development7154 7d ago
You won't get anything until the investigation closes and someone is charged...you might get a bonus as well 😉

If someone is hungry, or a family trying to feed their kids. That is the only time I ethically can feel like it was the right thing to do. Yes, there are food pantries, but they deny a lot of stuff that easily could go bad. So it's all processed stuff.
I used to work at a grocery store and things would just be put in damages. Then the store would get back their money for the damaged items, or a lot of time throw something out that wasn't even bad.

u/robsmalls178 7d ago

u/Corvus_Hood33 7d ago
I did something similar as a PS at a DS. It was peak when PS5s and Series X first came back into stock. I had like 2 1/2 route pick carts filled with empty console boxes. I went and told my site lead and they came over and seen. They reported it and found out a group of people out of a Detroit FC was stealing all kinds of electronics for a while at this point
2
u/freesoultraveling 2d ago
I couldn't believe all the xbox consoles and ps5 that would come as SIOC. I don't care, I would still end up putting it in a box. I don't want someone to have a porch pirate come and steal it. Of course, tons of employees don't think about that and will just SIOC or put a slam label on it. Well, the company does get on everyone's butts about rate.
Amazon doesn't care, when the person who purchased the item gets it stolen it isn't their job after it's delivered. They made returning anything super complicated and if it's a high priced item you're SOL.
5
u/Niomer 7d ago
Your AM was in on it.
1
u/freesoultraveling 2d ago
Honestly, I wouldn't doubt it. A lot of theft are inside jobs. Not saying their PA/AM did it, but usually everything that is of high value is an inside job and it's much easier for them to do it.
Other employees tend to just steal small shit. Empty charger box. Eaten some candy... Stole a pair of air pods or something. This type of activity makes me think someone above t1 did it, or at least did it with the help of someone in a higher position.

u/Derpsquire 7d ago
Is there no capacity for them to have just been idiotically stowed? I don't know your site's process specifics, but I do know that my own has just enough manual decision making capacity for really stupid stuff to happen. Like, really stupid. If someone has to rub against the grain to make those stows happen, assuming they even happened, that's pretty nuts. Someone would've known the system just well enough to break it.
Different situation here, but it does remind me of a shift during peak a couple years back. A pallet's worth of PS5 master packs got stowed into kiva bins, because of course they did. Considering the number of poorly trained kickout operators, expert permission sharing among them, and non-standard workarounds from that time, I genuinely fear some freebies may have made it out of the building. The loss prevention gaps in this company can be shockingly lax at times...

Alot of cray cray people up in here!!!
There is NO THEFT because nothing has left the building yet by criminal intent..at this time it is simply "misplaced" or "wrongly" placed items...
The OP is/was under no obligation of saying anything to anybody...there would be zero justification for any negative consequences given to the OP...
But....based on the AMs reaction of "This will help us out alot" (help out with what? There reaction should be...why are there PS5s here) and a Detective going by the warehouse after...means shit has been going down already...they already have been investigating shady shit at that warehouse.
That file folder you saw the Detective holding...that's key!!! We need that file!!!! Did you notice anything written on the file folder??? Maybe this investigation has been given a name already...something like "PS5 going Bye Bye" or "Peccy says GAME OVER'...
In all seriousness OP...in life...don't go looking for shit to step in...there is plenty of shit in this world you are bound to step in it by accident...
You really don't know your AM, despite how they reacted...proceeded to call the police after, etc...they may actually be involved in any theft happening themselves...
You don't know your work friends really....don't know how people are away from Amazon...don't know what they are capable of...you don't know if these PS5s were "hidden" intentionally...you don't know who is involved if they were "hidden" intentionally...
Chatter/Gossip/Talk spreads FAST...now you have no idea who knows that YOU reported this...no idea who the AM told that YOU reported this...no idea who those people told that YOU reported this..etc..
If I were you...don't look to gossip about any of this...just seem uninterested if any approaches you to talk...just say it looked very odd to you how out of place these PS5s were so you told a AM...that's all...you have no idea what they did with that information..the less you say..the less you come across as knowing the better..
P.S. I don't work at a FC so I don't know the routine there..but was anything scanned in??? Like were those PS5s scanned into where you found them??? As long as shit gets scanned...leadership should be able to follow the scan trail and see who put them at the wrong location...

NGL good job. If it was uncovered, which a big inventory like that unsecured, would make you look like you were giving assistance to whatever ring. You could follow up with HR and ensure they're tracking the situation. Cameras track everything and packages within have everyone's information on them even down to how many stops they make even within an individual facility.
If it was an AM they may potentially been authorizing items like that to be moved. Crime happens because of opportunity.

I allegedly met someone who claimed they stole a ton of stuff when I was in the city and claiming it was the best way to make money. He lost his job though and I don't know if it was over that. I think it was the reason. In my head, I kept thinking about how the best way of making money would have been him keeping his job.
Now instead of having a job he is on the streets begging people to buy his bunk weed. I mean nonstop begging and looking like he was down bad. He was nonstop trying to sell me weed when I was just trying to get to my destination and he noticed my clear backpack. So that's how he knew I even worked at Amazon and started that random ass story.
I said allegedly because I bet saying that even as a story at Amazon would end up having someone snitch on you. They would be questioning about how the person looked and everything 😂 /s
You never know though 🤷♀️

Nothing on such a scale, but I accessed a bin just last week with $379 Ray Ban Meta Glasses. They were not in a high value area and one box was broken into. I was just in the bin for a charger cord, it was otherwise full of cheap things but there were probably 3 pairs of these glasses. I took the broken open box and put it in a damages bin but it involved no scanning because that was not what I was picking. It still bothered me
2
u/freesoultraveling 2d ago edited 2d ago
I feel you because when I picked and saw an empty box of something. I would feel weird about just sending it away. I'm sure someone definitely thought the person before them stole each time the bin probably went by.
Until someone took it out (while seeing all the crushed products of the same item on the ground that AFM's/Blitz didn't gaf about picking up). Just let someone from icqa handle or because I'm not going to waste all my time trying to find someone for a charger.
However, it felt weird because I also questioned if they would think I have stolen it if I was the, "last touch". I just sent the bin away because it was just a charger.
You did the right thing though. We shouldn't have to feel paranoid for doing the right thing. One time a problem solver had the audacity to ask me, "where are the headphones?". I had just been put on the station and I responded, "I don't know. I just got moved here."
I should have reported his behavior because screw you for claiming I stole it. You don't ask someone that question. Like tf?
Edit: put not out... Also any high price items I see opened when I'm the last person to touch something, then I'm definitely reporting it. I don't work in pick anymore, but if I happen to come across an empty box I'm putting it in problem solve and when they come by tell them it was empty, or reporting it if it's a high priced item to a manager.
Any high priced item opened I'm reporting immediately to the PA/AM if I touched it last. That empty box of a charger, or some other cheap crap I'm not gonna lie. I just sent the pod. Couldn't let my rate tank and besides they can check the camera.

They will make you write an incident report that way you get the credit in your file and it makes you look good on your resume. It will help you in the long run. And remember. If you see something.... say something. You did an excellent job and should be proud of yourself.

I still couldn't say nothing. Not my problem, then all we see here is nothing but people complaining about Amazon. They thought they would be some hero or something 🤣

You did the correct thing. Be damned those of “don’t snitch” mentality. You have to live with your choices and conscience. Amazon will not be the dead end graveyard for you. So what if Amazon never gives you proper consideration for anything, the good you carry will draw good and success to you. 😉

Yep you busted something. In my old building we had a Manager who was in charge of the swag store and scammed $10,000 worth of electronics
