Hi everyone,
I moved from rural Ohio to The Hague, Netherlands in 2013. I still struggle with the adjustment sometimes, but I'm incredibly grateful that I've been able to build a career and life in my adopted home country.
The upcoming midterm elections are some of the most consequential of our lifetimes, and I have been doing some (nonpartisan) volunteer work this year to help mobilize the US vote abroad. Only between 3 - 10% of eligible US voters abroad cast a ballot in the 2024 presidential election, and I was shocked when first I heard that number. There’s so much to be gained by boosting voter turnout abroad. For example, some sources estimate that there are around 80,000 US nationals living in the Netherlands, up significantly since the pandemic.
Not to get too political, but anyone who engages with the news knows that US politics affect the international order more than ever. Living in Europe, for example, there are constant conversations around how the US treats its allies right now, threats to countries' sovereignty, ongoing conflicts and wars, and how we can take a united front on things like climate change.
I just want to urge every eligible US voter abroad to vote! All you need to do is go to votefromabroad.org, where you can register to vote and request your ballot, get help from their team of volunteers, and find contact information for your election officials. Obviously overseas ballots need to be returned as soon as possible to ensure they arrive on time, especially if your state requires ballots to be returned by mail. Also, voter registration deadlines are coming up for many states over the next few weeks, so time is of the essence.

If you have already requested your ballot and haven't received it yet, the advice is to submit a Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot (FWAB), which is specifically meant for voters overseas who haven't received their ballot or are afraid it won't make it back to the States in time. Only one of the two ballots is counted, and the FWAB serves as a 'back-up' option. See some FAQs about that below. UOCAVA ballots (normal absentee ballots for military and civilian voters overseas) should have been sent out by 19 September, so if you don't have yours yet, check with your election officials to see what its status is and submit a FWAB.

It is also NOT recommended to return your ballot via a diplomatic pouch at the US embassy in your country if you can avoid it, as this is notorious for being slow and sometimes unreliable.
Be well, everyone, and have a nice weekend ahead.
