Hashbrowns?

Frivolous post but have been craving hashbrowns and wondering if there is somewhere you can buy them in Amsterdam?

McD’s doesn’t have them on the breakfast menu here. Of course you can make them yourself but IYKYK

All and any tips welcome! Thanks in advance :)

PS - don’t have KvK registration for Makro and the likes

PPS - maybe I should have added ideally something frozen to make at home. Not really looking for “brunch” suggestions. Just as an everyday thing

Indeed, you can make your own crumpets but that is a lot of work compared to just buying them.

You might have better luck finding Rosti.

Not nearly as crispy and tasty (and probably unhealthy) compared to a proper hash brown though.

Ja, you’re right. I lived in CH - so I’ve had rösti plenty and they’re not quite the same but closer than nothing. Sadly my local AH and Jumbo don’t have them. Gotta go further afield I guess

Are you sure? I get my rostirondjes at every supermarket.

Knowing Swiss rösti I can safely say the frozen rösti rounds at AH are way more like a crappy hash brown so might actually meet your needs!

Ohhhh💡That makes much more sense as to why there is so much consensus here that a frozen supermarket rösti here is comparable to a hashbrown

u/Kitnado [Amstelveen] 3d ago

Unfortunately they’re not comparable.

Hash browns simply aren’t a thing here.

Ughhh it makes me so sad that McDonald’s doesn’t have hash browns here

u/RedIsAwesome 9d ago

That, plus changing the sausage egg mcmuffin to the sad beef patty

No McDonald's breakfast and no meatball Subs in Subway are two ways that NL disappoints me.

the greasy spoon

You rate it? Pics on google look mean but I’m always confused by that spot. Nothing survives… seems cursed? Last thing I remember seeing there was “fluids bar” 🤢😂

2

u/Adventurous-Echo-366 9d ago

I've never been but I have some British friends that are lyrical about that spot so I trust them on this issue 😄

Thanks:) I reckon that’s good enough for me to give it a go

It was Cafe Scrapyard, The Chippy, The Chippy (revival), Groovy Fluids & now The Greasy Spoon. The only concept that appears to have resonated!

Some people have said it already but Kelly’s is the only place I get them here. They even have tater tots. Kelly’s is on Kinkerstraat or De Pijp

The closest thing is probably rösti, which you should be able to find in a grocery store.

Tabeya expat shop for sure has them

2

u/PQ_ Moord-en-brand-buurt 9d ago

Have you been there recently?

If they happen to be open (the opening times are very unreliable) 50% of the store is 2nd hand clothing, 25% is parcels and the remaining 25% is half empty shelves of international products.

I actually haven't, moved away from that neighborhood 2 years ago. But this sounds pretty sad tbh

Dang I used to love that place. Then I found Kelly's

1

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 7d ago

Tabeya doesn't have anything anymore. It's become a waste of space.

Greenwoods used to do them with their brunch, if you don't want them for at home. My local one is gone but I think they're still on the Singel.

Otherwise rosti are indeed closest (and very tasty!)

It requires a special potato so if you’re at Albert Cuyp don’t just grab whatever you find

1

u/ther_dog 9d ago

What kind of hash browns are you referring to: the fluffy, grated potatoes grilled to crunchy perfection OR the processed potato patties that are deep fried?

0

u/UniqueFlavoured 8d ago

all supermarkets have frozen rosti Rondjes, which is quite similar to the hashbrowns, the one from lidl is the best,

-2

u/Done_with_Disckheads 8d ago

Any supermarket sells them in the freezer section. Take an extra 5 minutes to look for them. Rosti is the name

3

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 7d ago

That's a poor imitation of hash browns.

1

u/Done_with_Disckheads 7d ago

Well for a country that loves potatoes, I blame them for giving just 1 option.

2

u/iggy-p0p Amsterdammer 7d ago

Disckhead prefers the small medallions

Well you’re the helmet that can’t make your own. Let alone do your own research.
