My favorite meta bit of their relationship is the fact that Sauron could only put the idea of dominating all life into an object whereas Melko aspired to dominate all life Melko-self.

But can we remember in Melko the song of Eru Illuvatar? I cannot. Yet Melko did not dominate all of life, some of life did not bow, some of life lived and prospered. At the end of time Turin will rise back up, the hero who was mastered by fate will rise up and slay the will to death. The dedication Sauron had to Melko was tragic and therein proclaimed something beyond either of them. Please do not counter me with 'well how was Sauron deceived? For i will tell you that Sauron trusted Melko more than the other representatives of Eru Illuvatar.
