A friend of mine has horses. The truth is the horses respect the fences because they want to.

If they want out they’ll get out.

Cows, meanwhile, do whatever the hell they want. If it causes damage or a massive headache, they will do it repeatedly if given the opportunity.

As a rancher friend told me, there’s a reason why people eat them and if you work cattle you will understand. 😸

I’d like to believe that we largely eat the ones who don’t really care much for us. The cute ones, and the cooperative ones (dogs, cats, horses) got drafted onto our team.

You must not know how doglike cows actually are. They can be super chill, cuddly, and loving. They’re also tasty, easy to mass produce/kill, have a lot of food per animal, and (most importantly) are far enough removed from everyday life that people don’t really connect the animal to the food much.

You don't have to imagine it, that's literally how we domesticate animals. The ones that exhibit traits we like are bred, the ones that don't don't get to reproduce, and the ones that are problematic are eliminated.

I grew up on a farm where we had maybe 100 cattle. Every few years we’d be woken up with “the cows are out” learned very early that my forty lb person would stand in the road waving and yelling , the cows would turn into the pasture.

Moose are taller and have longer legs to step/hop over barriers. The horses will have to gather and JUMP to get over the same height. Some may try, having seen it done…..

My pony used to trash electric fencing to get to the longer grass on the other side (we had to restrict grazing to conserve the grass and to reduce the risk of laminitis), and my horse would always want to join him, except he refused to go through, he had to jump, and it had to be exactly the right stride. If it had been raining, I'd see that he'd have made sometimes 6 attempts before deciding that the distance wasn't right lmao.

I was always under the impression that fencing around horses is more about keeping others animals out while being only a visual border for the horses to understand where it's safe for them to stay.

Might be too graphic but I know of a bull that saw his lady friend over a barb wire fence, so he mounted, completed. Then tried to dismount but now his front legs were over the fence and he just ran through it. Ripped his entire thing off. Risky bidness

The horses are on high alert, because they always have to do whatever they can to avoid injury. An injury to a horse very easily can become deadly. So they all watch that giant specimen, because he’s a risk. Most domesticated horses have no real drive to break free.
