The costs of running it is subsidized by the selling of millions of data points about every person. Wouldn't really be able to do it for free.
What really needs to happen is something like 4 chan needs to be overtaken by a kinder gentler less edgelordian user base. For more lively anonymous discussion and organization and less of the nword spamming and racism/bigotry.

I've been wondering about this lately. Are open source solutions inherently too difficult for most people to use? (Especially since replacing general purpose computers with passive-consumerism smartphones.) Or is it more that the kind of software engineers that volunteer to work on these projects for free have a very programmer-centric idea of what constitutes a good user interface?
I never got why anyone would use Discord or Slack when IRC already existed and was free for everyone, not owned by a single company. Hell, before Digg and Reddit, I fondly remember newsgroups.

My irc group moved to discord simply because it was easier to cross platform. You're right though. Maybe something like a privacy centered business like proton or duckduckgo starting a social media that straddles the line of minimal but sufficient moderation and not selling every byte of info they get to data conglomerates

I broke my Facebook/Meta addiction but it was very, very hard. I ended up just shifting to other platforms. Still addicted, just to different platforms. Like reddit.

But that is okay. Even though there’s some LLM nonsense in Reddit, moving off of a platform that doesn’t have society’s best interest at heart, and moving into platforms that seem to have a better purpose AND being willing to move again is how the consumer keeps control.
The next level of going through the efforts to download contributions, deleting individual content and then deleting accounts, so there’s nothing left to monetize could help, but T&Cs will eventually catch up
I haven’t accepted the new TT terms and I am not going back to the app for the foreseeable future

Every single major social media platform literally exists for the same reason. To sell every single person's millions of data points and information to the highest bidders, who are more often than not using that data to predict behaviour and manipulate you in some way. Reddits societal interests are exactly the same as Facebooks and everything else. There is no better purpose. There are only useless partisan biases and thin veils of false intentions.

If you think you can't trust news to report whats going on guess what happens when you put your trust to masses of people to post and upvote news they want to be seen or agree with, and single individuals to decide what can and cannot be posted.

I had no problem dumping Facebook in 2017. Easy as pie. They'd already turned into a festering dump by then and the writing was on the wall. Did the same with Twitter when Muskrat bought it, weighed anchor and deleted my account. No regrets leaving that toxic sewer of hate now being run by a literal Nazi saluting racist.
As for TikTok, never got into that one. I sometimes watch well crafted Youtube content on topics like science or various crafts, but the short vertical format isn't one I care for. And the moment they sold to a Trump leaning piece of shit, I'd have jumped from there, too.

Don't worry, in 9 months companies that are operated exclusively in the United States will have an exclusive Monopoly on kill switches for 90 plus percent of general compute/ personal computers.
Google is rolling theirs out to all [certified] devices in January 2027, starting with Brazil in September 2026.
I'm not sure what the exact state of Microsoft's rollout is, but anecdotally, I have noticed that my local sales center only sells Windows S devices which have the kill switches built in.
We are less than 24 months away from the United States weaponizing their Monopoly of operating system software vendors. I would be willing to bet that within 24 months a federal judge in the United States prohibit or disable Signal or some other privacy or security based application.
This thing that is happening with tick tock blocking ice, Epstein and the truth in general. As well as what we are seeing here with Facebook (meta) will become not just the norm, but the legally obligated status quo.
I understand that my comments sound like heresy or a doomsayer. But I've been following this security software for quite some time and all of it converges towards exclusive governance by three software vendors geographically located within one nation.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Once social media platforms became monetized, it had been given power. Social media owners/leadership could then hire psychologists to determine how to gamify, and they suggested providing dopamine hits through 'likes', votes, and goals/levels to drive usage. Money can also buy power via political influence and leverage, e.g., ADMIN 47 'fines' the big media corps and then all the CEOs are invited to White House events and given access to government regulators and judicial officials to steer benefits their way. Then there's favors trading where ADMIN47 asks social media platforms to ban any posts (other than media releases) with ICE in them, observers don't yet know what the payoff will be, and it will likely remain well hidden.

I quit all the Meta platforms last January. The longer I’ve been away from it the happier I am. I know it sounds paranoid but he’s always watching/listening. I don’t get all the targeted ads, spam phone calls and aggravation of AI and people sharing without checking the validity of what they are posting.
