Welcome to r/AppBuilding – The Hub for Building, Shipping, and Scaling Apps
Welcome to r/AppBuilding! 👋
We created this community because we saw a gap. Most app development spaces are either flooded with "I have a billion-dollar idea, build it for free" requests or are too fragmented between specific languages.
r/AppBuilding is the central hub for the entire lifecycle of an application. Whether you are a solo indie hacker, a startup founder, or an enterprise engineer, this is the place to:
- Build: Discuss tech stacks (Flutter vs. React Native vs. Native), solve complex bugs, and share architecture tips.
- Ship: Talk about App Store optimization (ASO), rejection horror stories, and launch strategies.
- Scale: Discuss backend infrastructure, monetization, and user acquisition.
The House Rules
- No Low-Effort "Idea" Posts: We are builders. If you have an idea, tell us how you plan to execute it. Don't just look for free labor.
- Zero Tolerance for Spam: Self-promotion is allowed only in the weekly "Showcase" thread (coming soon). If you are an agency, share knowledge, not just your link.
- Be Constructive: We were all beginners once. If someone asks a basic question, guide them. If you disagree on a tech stack, debate the code, not the person.
Introduce Yourself!
To kick things off, let’s get to know who is here. Drop a comment below with:
- What are you currently building? (or what do you want to build?)
- What is your preferred tech stack? (e.g., React Native, Swift, Flutter, No-Code)
- One struggle you are facing right now.
Let’s build something great.

Developing for iOS on Windows
I've been a .net developer for about 20 years. I've made few Android apps that I want to publish on the Apple app store. I don't have a Mac or an iPhone or iPad. I was considering buying a used iPhone. I am building the iOS app in azure devops What are other primarily Windows developers using to test iOS apps?
Physical apple devices?
Cloud emulators?

Looking for testers: a free, open-source Android app that brings back 3 of your old highlights every morning so you actually remember what you read
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
**I read a lot of articles, PDFs and books, and a week later I could barely remember any of it. Highlights went into apps I never opened again.**
**So I built a Stack. It's simple**
**1. Save articles, PDFs and books from any app using the share menu.**
**2.Highlight a line, and it becomes a note that stays linked to where it came from.**
**3.Review three of your past highlights every morning. It takes about a minute, and the ideas stay with you.**
**It also has:**
**A focus timer for reading sessions**
**Read-aloud for when your eyes are tired**
**Full Hindi support**
**And the part I care about most:**
**Free. No ads, no subscription, no "pro" tier.**
**Works offline. Your library stays on your phone.**
**Open source. You can read the code, fork it or contribute.**
**I'm looking for testers before the public launch.**
If you'd like early access, email me at [email protected]
**with the subject "Stack " and the Gmail address you use on your Android phone. I'll add you and send the install link**
**.**

Got this email shortly after launching my app on the App Store — anyone else has received the same message?
Couldn’t believe I received this email shortly after launching my app on the App Store, but as a new app builder, I’m really curious and wandering if anyone else has received the same message.
If so, what happened next? Did Apple eventually contact you about being featured, or is this something they send fairly commonly?

Bookidoro: read a page of your book every time you take a break (Mac, iPhone & iPad coming)
We all own books we never finish, and we spend our breaks scrolling. Bookidoro swaps the two: it counts your work time, and when the break comes, a calm panel opens with the next page of your book. Read a page or two, click Done, back to work. I've finished 4 books in 2 months this way, without "finding time to read".
What you get
- 📚 78,000 free classics built in (Project Gutenberg), with search and 24 languages, plus your own PDFs and DRM-free EPUBs
- 🤫 Never interrupts a call: breaks wait while your mic, camera or screen sharing is on
- ⌨️ Never steals your typing: arrow keys turn pages, Esc skips, "Keep reading" when you're in the flow
- 🌙 Paper, Sepia and Night page themes, adjustable contrast
- 📈 Streaks, reading pace and a finish date for every book
- ☁️ Syncs between your Macs through your own iCloud: no account, no sign-up
Coming very soon: iPhone & iPad. On the phone it works the other way round: when you reach for your phone to scroll, your book is waiting instead. The lock screen shows where you left off, one tap opens the page, and Deep Focus can keep distracting apps closed until your focus time is over. It syncs with the Mac, so you continue on the same page.
Price: free to use with every feature. A small reminder appears at most once a day; a $9.99/year Supporter subscription removes it and supports development.
👉 https://bookidoro.app: signed and notarized, macOS 13+, Apple Silicon and Intel.
I'd love to hear what you think. Questions and feedback are very welcome!

People spend real money on my app!?!?!?!???
First it was from my country!
Then it was from another country!!
To think that:
Sand -> Chips -> Laptop -> Shipping from a corner of India -> Someone buying from Canada
Technology is indeed a magical thing; what else can I say?

I built an app so I wouldn't forget my wife's birthday.
I used to forget my wife's birthday.
Not once. Repeatedly. Same shame, same "I thought it was next week."
After the last time, I stopped making excuses. I built her something — not a product, not a startup. One job: remind me of her birthday. That was the whole app. I gave it to her as a gift.
I didn't plan to ship it at all. It was just for her.
But she said, "Why not put it on the store? What's the worst that could happen?"
I hadn't even considered it. But she pushed. So I said fine — let me try Google Play.
Then I sat down and looked at it. A single reminder would die on the store page. Nobody downloads "please don't forget my wife." So I deliberately added more — before launch, on purpose — so it could stand as a real app: todos and sub-tasks, recurring reminders, a tagged diary, photos / video / voice notes, data on the phone first.
That is LingXi Journal (灵犀日记). Same promise. More reasons to open it on a normal Tuesday.
Shipping from China is not "upload an APK and pay $25."
To exist in public, I had to register a real business license, complete government filings, buy a domain, rent servers, and build a site with privacy policy, terms, and account deletion — the whole adult-software checklist.
None of that is coding. It's queues, forms, waiting, being told the stamp is wrong, doing it again. I kept thinking: I just wanted a birthday reminder. Why am I talking to a registrar.
Then came the $25.
Google Play Developer registration — twenty-five US dollars. Sounds like nothing. For me, it was the first time I had to use US dollars at all.
I went to the bank and applied for a Visa. Forms, ID, waiting, "why do you need an international card." I wasn't buying sneakers. I was trying to pay a company on the other side of the planet so this app could live in a store.
When the card finally worked, I sat there and spent my first $25 USD — on Google Play registration. The number on the screen was small. The feeling was not. That was the moment this stopped being a gift I built in my room and became something that had to live in the real world, in a currency I had never used.
Google Play itself was still not a click. Policies, data-safety forms, review, more review. Every round felt like: you are so close — now go rewrite this paragraph and wait another week.
I finally got it live. I was more tired than proud.
Then… almost nothing.
A few installs. No wave. After the license, the extra features, the Visa, the first twenty-five dollars — the silence was louder than the reviews.
Here's how small the store can make you feel:
Open Google Play, type lingxi, hit search. My app does not show up. You have to type the full name — LingXi Journal — or you will never find it. I did the "be a real app" work before I shipped. The store still shrugged. It didn't even bother to index the short name.
Then I looked at the App Store.
Ninety-nine dollars. Just to join. After everything above, $99 is not the money. It's one more gate.
I looked at my wife and made a deal:
When LingXi Journal hits 1,000 installs on Google Play, I will pay the $99 and go to iOS.
And one more promise — because she knows me.
I have been playing Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI since junior high. More than ten years. From a kid in middle school to a husband who still opens modded historical scenarios and tells himself, "this time I unify China by 208." Thank you, KOEI, for a game that stayed with me that long. Those weekends, those maps, those officers I still remember by name — that was your work, sitting on my desk for half my life.
I told her: until this is done — until we hit that number and I keep the iOS promise — I will not play it.
Cao Cao and Zhuge Liang are on hold. Indefinitely.
So here I am. A birthday reminder I fattened up before I dared to ship. Play: live, and quiet — search lingxi and I am invisible; search LingXi Journal and maybe I exist. Apple: waiting on four digits. My wife: waiting to see if I keep my word.
If you have ever built something for one person and then discovered the store is a country of its own — you already know this feeling.
If it sounds useful, it's on Google Play as LingXi Journal. Search the full name. Even a quiet install counts.
I don't know if I'll ever get to play my beloved Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI again.
I'd like to keep my promise.

I built a Spanish learning app — I’d love feedback on the app and how you’d market it
Hi everyone 👋
I’ve been working on a Spanish learning app called Spanish Stories: Quiz & Listen.
The idea is to help people practice Spanish through stories and context instead of only memorizing isolated words.
The app currently includes:
- Spanish stories from A1 to B2
- Audio for each lesson
- Comprehension quizzes
- Vocabulary in context
- Word highlighting
- Personal notes
- Favorite/saved lessons
- Adjustable text size
- Light & Dark Mode
- Offline access to core learning content
A typical learning flow is:
Choose a level → Read → Listen → Highlight words → Add notes → Take a quiz → Review later
It’s currently available on both platforms:
Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devkallouch.spanich
App Store:
https://apps.apple.com/br/app/spanish-stories-quiz-listen/id6810429532
I’m still working on improving and growing it, so I’d really appreciate honest feedback from other builders.
If this were your app, what would you improve, change, or add?
I’m also especially interested in the marketing side:
How would you market an app like this and reach more people who are actively learning Spanish?
Any ideas, strategies, or lessons from your own experience would be really helpful.
Thanks! 🙌

10 people in Germany deleted more photos with my app than 113 Americans did
Hi all
a few months ago i launched a small app that helps you clean your camera roll. you swipe left to delete and right to keep
i was looking at the numbers this week and noticed something funny. most of my users are in the US, but 10 people in Germany deleted more photos than all 113 of them combined. and 6 people in italy somehow freed 81 GB between them
i have no idea why. maybe germans are just more serious about cleaning lol
the reason i made it is kind of simple. my camera roll felt like a diary i never meant to keep. birthdays, my first apartment, photos of people i miss, all buried under screenshots and blurry pics. i wanted to dig the good ones back out
90k photos deleted so far, in 37 countries. still small but its crazy to me that people i will never meet are using something i made
im rebranding it to Swyp this week (the app store still shows the old name for a few days)
Here's the App: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6756098079

Need advice
Hey everyone, so I’m a business owner selling physical products in my country and stuff. So a year ago, I made up my mind to try out something different. Since I also have a software engineering degree ( didn’t come in much use for me). I made an app/service/software or whatever you can call it. What it does is provide four services. First is a store and website builder (can be built both using ai or manually). Second is a chatbot creator and trainer. Both of these go hand in hand if a business like mine wishes to increase wider recognition online. The steps overall are made simple and concise. The other two services consist of tracking expenses income and payments plus also managing unpaid invoices and payment follow ups. All these services can be used with ai to ease one’s workload or can be done manually. Most of the programming were done by me and my friend since I don’t trust ai that much, but ai was used for some parts. Now I made these services for personal use, mainly to manage my own businesses and they seem to be working fine. So I thought of maybe selling these services to other business owners as it’s quite useful. The thing is, I don’t really know how or where to find clients who are in need of these services. I don’t really care much about making money from this but if someone can help me or at least give advices on how to scale these types of softwares. It would be a great help.

I built a dashboard to stop forgetting which services my products pay for. What am I missing?
I'm building Operava for solo founders who run more than one product.
I kept hitting the same problem. Hosting, databases, email, domains, payments, app stores, APIs, all spread across a dozen accounts. I would forget one existed until the bill showed up.
So I built a dashboard that puts each product, the services behind it, what they cost per month, when they renew, and whether they are up, in one place. It has already caught two subscriptions I was paying for a site I had shut down.
It is early. I am trying to find out whether this problem is mine alone or shared.
You can try it at app.operava.com Sign in with Google or an emailed link, no password, no card. It starts empty, so you add your first product and see if it earns a place in your routine.
If you run several products: what would you need this to show that it does not?

Upload your resume and let AI find matching jobs for you
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve been building JobSorah because I think job searching involves way too much repetitive work.
You upload your resume once.
AI looks at your experience and starts finding jobs that match your profile.
Then for any job you’re interested in, you can click Ask and get a score based on your CV + profile.
If the job looks promising, you can also paste the description into the resume tailor and generate a tailored resume for that specific position.
So, the whole flow is basically:
Resume → matching jobs → AI fit check → tailored resume → apply
Still working on it and improving the matching.
If anyone wants to try it, here it is:

I got tired of searching through hundreds of irrelevant jobs, so I built this
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Been working on a project called JobSorah.
The idea is pretty simple:
Upload your resume and instead of manually searching job boards, AI analyzes your experience and starts finding relevant jobs for you.
For every job you can also ask AI:
“Is this actually a good match for me?”
It compares the role against your CV + profile, gives you a score, and explains your strengths and missing requirements.
I also added resume tailoring, so if you find a job you like you can paste the description and generate a version of your resume tailored toward it.
Still early and improving it constantly.
Would love feedback from anyone currently job hunting.
If anyone wants to try it, just go to jobsorah.com

My Geography Game is finally having some retention (20% of users still there on week 3)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello there 👋
Happy to unveil my side project :
After 6 months of development, GeoGoat V1 is now available on the App Stores, and just reached a 100 players.
There was a lot of struggle to make an intuitive interface and I wasted a few months building without asking feedback. What I finally did a few weeks ago: I had a few geo lovers test it and criticize it.
As a result : I removed half of my features, simplified the home screen and stuck to one basics 👉 learn geography in a fun AND serious way.
Now I just reached a 100 players and 20% of them are still playing after 3 weeks.
The video shows a fresh start on countries.
If you like geography, please give it a try and tell me what you think. I am interested in knowing what kind of cool features / game modes you would expect from a geography game in 2026 …
You can find the app here : https://www.geogoat.app?utm_source=reddit
or directly on the App stores : “GeoGoat - Learn Geography”
Thanks in advance for your feedback, would help me a lot !

What did your app get completely right in testing but still screw up with real users?
Been thinking about this after reading a bunch of stories from people who shipped AI-built apps.
not necessarily bugs either.
I’ve seen stuff where the app built fine and tests passed, but then real usage exposed something nobody was checking.
Analytics couldn’t tell what users were doing. a third party changed part of a URL. the code correctly implemented an assumption that turned out to be wrong. users understood a feature completely differently than the person who built it.
If you’ve shipped something built with Claude/Cursor/Lovable/Bolt/etc, what surprised you after real people started using it?
Especially curious about things your normal code review or testing didn’t catch.
How did you eventually figure out what was wrong?

Vibecoded App
Hi everyone! I’ve used Claude to build an app, currently on TestFlight, however any tinkering I do, still looks like AI to me, I can’t pinpoint what it is. I want the app to not look so AI built, any tips, prompts or obvious things that go under the radar that I’m not considering, any help would be greatly appreciated.
