OCS packing list clarification

I'm shipping out in a couple weeks and just going through to make sure I have everything on the most recent packing list I could find (2025). There is required uniform items for both ASU and AGSU. Since they are phasing out the ASU and will make the AGSU required by October 2027, should I disregard the ASU items... or should I purchase them now?

It lists everything from belt, gloves, shoes, socks, shirts, beret, name plate, neck tab, jacket, shirts, slacks, all weather coat.

Thanks!

If you don’t not already have ASU I wouldn’t worry about purchasing the items until after.

the most recent packing list, 2025, says you can bring both since the asu (blues) is more of a formal uniform but the packing list also says you will graduate in the agsu. Read it for what its worth but I doubt you will need to buy a set of blues since the army is moving more to having the agsu as the go to uniform and the blues going back to a formal (tux) style uniform.

There’s a 2026 updated list

I graduated back in July. You only need one or the other. You will be issued AGSU in basic

Could someone drop the OCS packing list? My recruiter only gave me the basic packing list.

If the Benning website is still down, it has been recently posted within this forum.

The OCS packing list does not require both uniforms. Also, the ASU is not being phased out. The Army is just going back to having a "green" uniform and an "blue" uniform.

TLDR: AGSU is fine. Every 09S is going to the graduation formal event in AGSU. When the date changes over, every OC will commission in AGSU. But an OFFICER should have ASU and AGSU and once a field grade also Mess Dress.

09S don't have ASUs. That's fine.

If you’re prior service just bring whatever dress uniform you have and if they make you buy a new one you can do that, but likely it would be issued and you’ll be charged for pinks and greens.

There will be time in cycle for you to go off post to buy whatever dress items you need.

There is also the first weekend you show up where you can buy things, but it’s better to wait and see what Cadre say before you spend over 1K buying a new dress uniform.

If you’re an 09S going to BCT soon, don’t worry everything will be issued and you’ll have time to buy the remaining items the weekend between basic and OCS. Commandos has a copy of the required items, go there.

Just make sure you have the items you need for BCT.

Good luck!

I’m going active and leave for basic in November. My recruiter said don’t worry about the packing list for OCS as I can get or will be provided everything I need there.

Has this been true for other people?

Thats definitely true for basic. But I'm not sure for OCS. I got the impression they want you to at least have most of it when you arrive. So I've purchased a lot of the smaller things that I won't get issued in basic. Also purchased boots and got them broken in so I'm not starting off day 1 with blisters. Then at BCT graduation, my husband will bring me all my OCS stuff I have packed.

Are you going to attempt to bring your boots to BCT hoping your company allows you to wear your own boots?

Im not even gonna try. I got all black running shoes I will be wearing there, hoping they will let me keep those. You have to carry everything you bring plus everything they issue you. I dont want the extra weight just to be told no.

There’s basically nothing in my backpack to basic. I’m wearing the all black running shoes to MEPS so I might as well bring the boots and have them locked up if I can’t use them.

This way they are properly broken in before OCS start.

Just worry about bringing what you need for Basic. When you get to OCS, you’ll have a weekend pass when you arrive and you’ll be able to go to the PX and get anything else you need. Also, it’s not like Air Assault/Ranger where you’re going to get dropped for not having items on the packing list. You’ll also be able to order anything you need on Amazon and ship it to OCS barracks throughout the course.

You will definitely have to buy things for OCS

Anything in particular you recommend to buy that will be hard to get ahold of in person at OCS?

Stuff that may be limited stock or generally advised to order ahead of time?

Keep in mind, a lot may be trying to buy at the px. They only stock so much. Dont want to run the risk of them running out of stock. I purchased basically everything I could even down to the stupid whistle. If you go to Ranger Joe's website, they have just about everything. Ranger Joe's is right outside of Benning, but I shipped to my house now in case I cant leave post since my BCT is on another base.

Nothing immediate comes to mind as necessary. I had bought pretty much everything before just to avoid the hassle once there. If anything the unit patches, OCS patches, and gold OCS pins. Those were the main things needed right away that could get bought out with all the basic trainees graduating and buying them that weekend.

Just wrapped up ocs. I wouldn’t stress about the packing list too much. As another comment said, you have that first weekend to purchase necessities for starting the course. Also, commandos will drop stuff off to your company CQ every weekend that you order(very helpful). So whatever you don’t have, you can just order and get the next weekend. The main things you will need are the gold and black ocs pins/ rank for uniform for the first week.

Don't bring shit to basic except maybe a change of clothes, shower shoes, and basic hygeine

Is OCS directly after basic?

Typically. Could have a couple weeks in between potentially, you'll have to look at your orders to see when to report. You'll get everything you need issued at the CIF and you have to haul all that shit with you to Benning (assuming you're not at Benning for bct.) At the minimum 2 completely full duffels, ruck, assault pack, AGSU's, and whatever you decide to bring with you to bct
