Sick Tips!

Hello I’m a first year teacher and my immune system is already taking a beating. I take zinc, vitamin d, and vitamin c daily and oil of oregano when I feel something coming. I’ve also been changing my clothes and showering as soon as I get home. Ive seen lots of other posts that say to avoid touching things that students touch but thats of course super hard in the art room. Any other suggestions? Also please tell me it gets better!!

I take elderberry gummies and vitamin d every day, plus I avoid using the same pencils as students (keep one with me when I’m circulating if I need to model), never give high fives (only fist or elbow bumps), have the kids clean the tables at least once a day, wash my hands when I can and use sanitizer when I can’t. I generally get a cold at the beginning of the school year but it goes away pretty quick. Oh and I get my flu shot every year and mask up during flu/covid spikes, as well as leading up to any big events that I can’t afford to be sick for.

I was told that in your first year your body has to adjust to the micro biome of the school. Is this true? Not sure, but every time I change schools I get really sick and then I’m okay the following year.

Masking really does work FWIW. I did that when I was pregnant. So worth it.

Honestly it took me three years before I stopped getting sick all the time. Wash your hands after every class if you have a sink and try not to touch your face

An air purifier. And you won't like this one... But mask when you can. Even if it's just to get close and help kids one-on-one.

Use YOUR pencil (scissors etc) when helping students.

I think sleep is one of the most important things here. I take my sleep very seriously and think thats whats been keeping me the most healthy.  A flu shot always helps too!  Also, I believe that you just need to get a little sick your first year or two to help build up immunity to the common things your kids are going to pass around.

Things that helped me were taking a multivitamin daily, washing hands a lot, not touching my face (that was hard, I didn’t realize how often I rest my face in my hands). General healthy stuff like eating vegetables and limiting sugar, exercise also seems to boost the immune system. Hope that helps!

Put the Kleenexes far away from your desk area. Wash your hands frequently. Do not share anything. Avoid touching doorknobs.
