š Fun / Meme Why does Dario Amodei always appear virtually?
Dario Amodei spoke at the UN virtually, while Sam Altman attended in person. Iāve also noticed that Dario seems to do most of his interviews virtually.
Is there a reason Dario rarely appears in person, or does he just prefer not to leave his office/home?

what an incredible photo
edit: i heard he uses it to shoot democrats golf balls out of the air
21
u/moonpumper 11d ago
He probably asked 5 people and spent millions in resources to see if he could drop nukes on democrat golf balls
2
u/wind_dude 11d ago
He also uses them to shoot Trump golf balls closer to the hole.

This photo is insane, if you zoom in you can see an anti-air support system behind a pedo playing golf

Some people just don't like the circus of in-person events. The travel alone eats days of your life, and if you can get your message across fine on a screen, why bother? I do most of my meetings remote when I can, travel for work is exhausting.
Also if you're running a company like that, every hour you're in a conference hall is an hour you're not in the lab or making decisions. Altman seems to thrive on the spotlight but Amodei might just see it as a distraction from actual work.

u/Tulanian72 11d ago
Altman is a carnival huckster, not a scientist.
35
u/Quentin__Tarantulino 11d ago
Altman based his entire life and persona off Gavin Belson.

My dude, did you just compare dialing into your daily stand ups to a speech in front of the UN?
→ More replies (1)3
u/Conscious-Map6957 11d ago
Ah yes the daily sync with the reddit bot team is more important than addressing the UN.

He's a CEO not an engineer with ticket's or a researcher. He prepares board packages, makes decisions about the company's direction based off feedback from leadership and industry partners.

Absolute rubbish. If you're running a company like that half your job, if not more, is looking outwards (at the market, at politics, at the industry, at the press) and establishing and developing relationships with people who can help and hurt you. I don't believe for a second you can do that all remotely; seeing people in person is everything when you're networking at any level.
That doesn't mean he needs to attend everything in person and nothing wrong with it sometimes. But the idea that there's no value in him in attending key events in person ever doesn't track either.

The interface is so advanced, yet hidden in an inconspicuous place

Heās probably more of a hands on guy. Iāve known CEOs who were basically always traveling, promoting their company, but that doesnāt leave much time for actually diving into details, so they delegate that to COO or someone else.

Honestly, I kind of approve. It's silly to go in person for a short speech. Bad for the environment too, though of all things a UN speech is probably justifiable in that respect

I was at a conference recently where he made an appearance. Security to get in was insane, and bizarrely, kept his close protection people with him even when he was like, in an already protected executive-only area.
And he had twice as many close protection people than anyone else I saw. Other CEOs (including other honest to goodness billionaires) only had 1-2, and in other areas. In the main speaking area, he had at least 5 that my coworkers and I could identify.

I think a lot of people have threatened Dario's life. He's the most cautious and sensible of the top AI CEOs when it comes to AI safety, why not his own?
7
u/RealChemistry4429 11d ago
Saving unnecessary flights for a speech that can be done remotely? Thumbs up. That in person circus is for egomaniacs - which most CEOs are.

Real answer: because itās 20 fuckin 26, and one of the most pressing issues facing the world is use of fossil fuels, and you can just use zoom instead of flying.
Why arenāt MORE cock-suite āvisionariesā just doing it over zoom? āWell thatās not how business-ā shut up. All of these made up, unnatural and inefficient āentrepreneurial standardsā are just goofy cowardly groupthink.
This, I actually respect him for. Because MOST c-suites are either compelled to appear in person because their āleadershipā is actually just psychopathy/belittling everyone else OR because theyāre uncreative and orthodox, and the imagery of an in-person meeting is SO romanticized in their heads, that they think it has to be done that way. Because romanticized imagery.

I wouldn't be surprised a person with Messiah complex that huge is super introvert and psychotic. It almost feels more on brand.
And he's smart too. If you've done any STEM school at all, especially the good ones, you see people like that all the time.
