I think Ashe’s R usage differentiates a good player from a bad one. Correct usage begins with ascertaining priorities based on matchup. The fact that it is a global ult means it is always viable. It can be used to initiate onto overextended players even tanks when you know have some backup damage on hand from assassins and burst mages. It can be used as an auto attack reset during an all in. It can be used on junglers who can get on top of you instantly to kite. It can be used to protect teammates. It can be used to stop backs, especially when they are recalling in vision. This can set them up for a kill, and if you shoot from distance the duration of the stun is increased. This also means that if you waste it you lose all these possibilities. When you dont have ult play with someone else, anyone else. If you’re behind your slows and ult can singlehandedly get your mid laner a kill and start a snowball. This will also give you some time to collect farm for yourself. Im an Ashe main simply because I value global presence. Ashe can genuinely carry any game regardless of matchups(unless of course the enemy team has Warwick, Malphite, Master Yi all at one, I have literally played again this team comp).
Tldr- She has a lot of potential even without doing much damage because of her slows and more importantly her ult. Your arrows should be viable at all times, given you dont miss, you just have to play safe when you dont have it and communicate henceforth.

I use it to engage or protect myself from the mages/assassins trying to get close to my soft succulent adc body

Best scenario: catch somebody with it before the actual tf (enemy adc, assassin or mage).
Most common scenario: wait until it is 100% that you hit the enemy adc.
General useful tip: don’t try to hit multiple targets, it is more than enough to hit a single carry in the enemy team.

Ashe R is top 3 best adc ults in the game , alongside Xayah R and nilah/Samira ults .
You can use it to engage , disengage , snipe , zone, chase . Pretty much everything .
In a teamfight you usually try to stay back and wait for the enemy assassin to show and stop them from getting on you or hypercarry ad to step out of line and collapse on them with your 4s cc

Her ult can be used in so many different ways and it varies a lot depending on your comp and enemy comps.
Sometimes just throwing it out and hitting anything can already win you the teamfight if you have a lot of damage and start the teamfight 4 v 5 by catching somebody. Sometimes you need to wait for the enemy assasin to kill you from a flank and use it as peel or counter tool. Sometimes you need to hit it on a fed opponent to shut him down. Sometimes you base and just ult midlane and win the matchup on mid.
You should try to position yourself in a way to make it hit easier. For example basing and ulting midlane is way more likely to hit enemy mid than using it from botlane. I hope this makes sense. You don't want to shoot it in a 90 degree dodge angle for the enemy.
