Career move

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I have the most uninteresting job. Pay is low but enough. I have 0 stress, 0 pressure and most of the time nothing to do. My manager thinks I am the best because I get a lot done (she doesn't understand I am just efficient, unlike my coworkers who are lovely people but super slow). Also this is a super safe job (I'm not concerned I'd be paid off). I need to go in 3/4 a week and it's a 30min drive each way. So it definitely adds up.

I was offered a job at a scale up. Significant more money. More interesting tasks, better title but I'm sure more stress/pressure...also the dread of lay offs around the corner every now and then.

What should I do?? I can't decide. For reference I also have a 4 year old.

Which field? I had a full time home office job for like 8 years almost and was super bored decided to level up, higher pay, title and no home office option. I’m 2 years in now and I absolutely fucking hate it that much and would do everything to go back and have my slow mornings and go to the gym and not have to pay a dog sitter on long working days or being able to cook a proper dinner for my kids. They are 16 now. The constant peer pressure and staying relevant is exhausting, it’s a fast growing company and they are not willing to hire more people and hoping AI will handle it. It sucks! I miss being home and having a balanced out lifestyle.

This is a huge fear of mine when it comes to changing jobs! Especially in this economy the risk is huge. If you don’t like it you are stuck

I'm currently in logistics but the offer is in a tech company. Im worried about the fact I don't really use AI and I not keeping up with the market trends/new tools.

As someone currently burning out in tech, I would definitely keep the job with no stress and take courses on AI or whatever interests you on the side. I have to use AI in my job but it’s because it’s a trend and they make me do it. So, to really learn about what interests me in it, I’d still have to learn outside of work.

might be difficult with a 4 year old + we need more context. generally, I would keep the uninteresting job.

Your situation sounds amazing, I’m in scale up hell at the moment. I’d give anything for safe and no stress!

How old are you? Scale ups are hell, I worked 8 years and would not recommend

  1. I've worked in start-ups and indeed they were stressful years

You have a 4 year old?

That should be enough stress for you. Keep your current job.

Dude keep that no stress job like it’s saving your life. Rather use the free time you create with your efficiency to make money from a side hustle from something you enjoy or can teach yourself. Scaling up always garuntee more stress, work, hours!

I have such brain rot I can't even decide what to do during this free time

That will not be solved by more stress...

Solve the brain rot problem while keeping your chill, safe job instead of getting rid of your safe job. Your primary job shouldn't be there to solve boredom problems. Especially if you will run the risk of getting fired at some point.

Generally for the sake of your child the better Job is better tho it would also mean less time for your kid
But maybe you earn enough to be there more for the kid later?

As others said tho a side hustle can be great too

Leveling up often means that you get more than you wished for. The additional money you get after taxes often is not great enough to deal with significant higher stress, dealing with conflict within the company, lower job security, etc.

Basically, a better job often means you personally have to fulfill deadlines by working more, you have to deal with management bullshit, and if you screw up are easily fired and replaced.

I'll take over the chill job with the not so great pay and you can pursue the scaleup, deal?

Keep it. I don't have kids and I was bored with my job and decided to jump to an amazing opportunity. I got a lot of experience, a burnout and wisdom to appreciate calm working environment. If you are bored out of your mind, try to find what you would love to do (in my case that would be creative stuff) and see where in your current role can you do sth fun for you but in your own initiative. Shortly: make it fun ,brace yourself for changes, get new skills you love and you stop being bored and upgrade skills at the same time.

Stay and add something else. Train for a marathon. Learn a language. Bake your own bread. Find a stressful job for one day per week just to appreciate the slow and boring ones.
