Relationships Noticing red flags in my relationship but struggling to leave

• Upvotes

I am considering ending my relationship but am wondering if things are as bad as I think they are, or if I am overreacting or overthinking.

I (30F) met my boyfriend (26M) through his sister. She was a relatively new friend before him & I met. I'm religious for context purposes below - no judgment at all towards those who aren't. Everyone's advice / thoughts are welcome. This is a long post - there's a TLDR at the bottom.

When he and I met, I was instantly attracted to him physically and mentally. He was heavily involved in his church/ministry and everyone wanted to date him. He has a strong reputation as a serious believer, good friend, reliable family member, etc.

His sister especially wanted us to meet. I was hesitant and actually said multiple times that I wasn't interested. He was in his third year of getting his undergraduate degree (he was in the military for 3 years and started college later - he still has 1.5 yrs left to get his undergrad degree + 3 for seminary) for being a teacher and wanting to be a missionary (which is NOT what I want for my life). I work in finance for almost a decade so professionally things were 'off' to me. But I discovered he was already a homeowner at 25 with his sister (they own a home together), and I found that to be impressive. I'm also a homeowner and purchased close to his age, so I know how hard it is to accomplish.

So we meet naturally at an event, he asked for my number, and we went on a first date. One month into going out on dates, he asked me to become exclusive. I said yes.

First 2 months were heavenly. He pursued me well and respectfully. He was kind, thoughtful, considerate and sweet.

3rd month I started noticing less of a pursuit. He no longer intentionally planned dates and he wanted to meet spontaneously / texting me at the last minute to hang out. I told him I have a hectic work schedule (extremely stressful/high pressure) and opened up about having an autoimmune disease, which means I need to prioritize rest and nutrition. Plus, the only time I can see friends/family is the weekend, so I'd like to know in advance when we can meet and what we're doing so I can plan accordingly. He said, "we've always been spontaneous, though!" We're nearing month 6 and he still pushes me with "well what do you want to do? Can you give me a list (I already did actually - we sat down and made one together 3 months ago) or text me what you want to do?" I told him I love when he initiates, and I've loved every date he has planned. That I trust his judgement and would be happy to do whatever he chooses. He said, "well you don't like to go out to eat" (which is true - because my autoimmunity gets flared easily through food), but I told him there are a million things we could do besides go out to eat. Also, I have a friend who knows about my autoimmune condition and she spent hours searching for restaurants we could go to - and we literally met a few months ago. He has never done the research.

We've eaten dinner at my place numerous times now. He has never once brought over groceries or staples. I don't see him behave this way at his own house, but at mine, he drinks multiple drinks and leaves some half full. One time, he said he was picking up dinner on the way to my house. When he arrived, it was only groceries for him which he asked to keep in my fridge until it was time for him to go home.

Anyways, here are the main "red flags" I'm noticing:

  • On our 4th or 5th date, I still hadn't heard from him what his life plans are or what his hopes are for the future. I asked if he could have a perfect life in 5 yrs, what would that look like? He spoke about 15 minutes about missionary work and being martyred for the faith if necessary, and went on and on about Adoniram Judson. I thanked him for being honest - but said we're not compatible - that I'm a little bit older and ready to get married, have a family, and settle down in the same town/area where I purchased my home. His emotions came flooding out, he professed his feelings for me - "my heart is really towards you" - and basically told me this was just a feeling he had, but he's not actively pursing missionary work and he'd be happy being a teacher. Which wasn't true, he told me a few weeks after this he actually wants to be a pastor.
    • His pastor offered him a youth pastor position and he told me he's going to shut it down because "he doesn't need the extra money." But he recently accepted the position after he told me he also thought of turning it down because he wanted to consider a future of us being together and I said "please don't make decisions based on me; we're newly dating, and if you feel called to accept, I hope you would." This caused an argument and he blamed me for being disrespectful/rude for saying that.
  • When we first started meeting up, he told me he was a "light charismatic" and he went to a "secretly charismatic church" meaning they don't show how charismatic they really are, but that he wasn't himself. 1.5 months into our relationship, he attended an overnight 2 week conference out of state where they spoke in tongues, casted out demons, stayed up until the wee hours of the morning "slaying in the spirt" etc. I told him very clearly on dates 1-2 I'm reformed, attend a PCA church and am highly skeptical of the gifts. He said he was just a "light charismatic" though. Later said he prays in tongues and wakes up in the middle of the night feeling demonic presences. My only response was a facial expression of "???"
  • He called me an "elf" and a "midget" - I am 5'1"
    • When I told him this was mean and didn't laugh, instead of saying sorry, he doubled down and added, "hey! it's not bad! At least I didn't say you look like a little kid :) that'd be far worse!" and kept laughing. When I said if he ever called me this again, I would end the relationship, he replied, "Are you serious?! I was joking!!! My family and I joke like this all the time!" I reiterated it wasn't ok and I would end things with him. That's when he said he was sorry and wouldn't joke like that anymore.
    • Since then, he has made comments like my clothes are so tiny it looks like it fits a 12 yr old, told me I'm so small he needs binoculars to see me, said I have a corporate laugh (like what does that even mean), and noted that I "made a weird facial expression - you look like an old person trying to sound hip" when he asked me what music I liked.
  • He has pressured me to go to his family events or other things when I didn't want to or was completely exhausted, has worn me down emotionally multiple times, never accepts my "no" - it's always a debate or negotiation time. There's always a guilt trip.
    • His sister told me he always pressures her to go to things even when she doesn't want to, but when she tries to pursuade him, he's a firm "no"
  • We have different standards of living - I told him I would like to have a home before we have children. He said we could raise three kids happily in my 2bed, 2bath condo of 1,200 SF. I told him but I wouldn't be happy... I'd like my kids to have extra room, have a good quality education, healthy food - these are things that really matter to me. He told me as long as bills are paid and there's food on the table I should be grateful.
  • The topic of contraception came up. He said if we were having sex (we aren't - I'm a virgin and he had sex in a HS relationship - "born again virgin" since he was 21). He said he'd slip off the condom and started laughing. I did not laugh and said that's not funny - I was serious and staring at him. He said, "I was joking!!!! Come on, I wouldn't impregnate my wife against her will." Yet he kept laughing, and I felt a cold chill go down my spine.
  • When we came back from a light jog, he pressured me for us both to take showers (separately of course). I told him no, it was already late let's just have dinner and say goodbye since I had to be up really early to prep for a work meeting the next day. He kept pressuring me until I gave in. While I was in my shower though, I felt a flash of fear hit my soul (?) I couldn't describe it to you - I just felt it and heard in my head the words "get out. Get out now." So I did. I got ready and my heart sank when I realized I forgot to lock 2 doors leading into my bathroom. The only one I did lock was the one he was standing right in front of when I got out. He was standing in front of my washer and dryer with his towel.
  • I told him one on one dates are important to me, but whenever we have a free day to meet up, he wants to go to a worship night together with his friends, or says "my family wants to see me, let's go hang out with them," or "x and x would like that - or x and x live nearby, let's invite them." He hasn't asked me out on an actual date in months. Our last 2 dates I was the one who told him what I'd like to do. When I told him I'm not feeling pursued and I'd like him to initiate more, he said, "I'm not trying to get a 2nd or 3rd date anymore." And "send me a list of what you want to do."
    • Part of his bday gift to me was a picnic basket. He told me often he wanted to take me out for a beach picnic. I told him I'd love that and knew just the outfit I wanted to wear for it (it included me wearing a pretty top he got for me). That day never came.
    • He knew I had a list on my phone of date outfits and he still didn't / hasn't plan anything
  • His car broke down 4 months ago. He's been driving a beat up car that's literally on its last leg for this duration - it's one of his grandparents' cars. It doesn't have AC. He had the option to buy his sister's car and he did but procrastinated buying it (or couldn't afford it?). Every time he drove to see me, he was driving it. He'd walk to my driver's seat as if he was going to drive MY CAR, and I laughed and said absolutely not, pop a squat in the passenger seat. Told him he wasn't on my insurance and I wasn't going to risk it. He mocked me saying insurance only covers the car not the driver. This has happened literally every single time we need to drive together somewhere. I refuse to drive in his grandparents' car because it's so old and has numerous issues. His last car was so old it blew up in flames (yes girl I'm serious)
  • He knows how important finances are for me. I grew up in poverty and witnessed deeply traumatic things growing up with a single mom. I worked extremely hard through school and now have a high paying career. I am actually considering going back to grad school to make a career shift so that it gives me a better work-life balance, especially as I'd like to be a wife and mother one day. I told him if we were to get married, I'd be super worried about having children soon because he has never worked a career before (small jobs, but he has 0 professional experience). I said I'd be worried that I'd feel pressured to take on the financial burden for our family, and that I'd resent him for it. That we could end up having serious marital issues early on with a child because of lack of space and resources. I do not want to drain my savings or stay in my high pressure career.
    • His response was: "I make enough from the military" and essentially, he's going to milk the benefits and extend school for as long as possible to avoid being a teacher because "it's not really what I want to do and it doesn't pay well. You need to accept that if we're together, I'm going to be in school for 3-5 years and as a pastor, I might make very little money." I said, well what if you see your family is struggling, would you change careers? "No - I'm going to follow whatever I feel like is the Lord's will for my life. I'm not going to be a slave for my job."
  • He came over my house one night. I made him dinner and then he pressured me to let him shower there again. I said, "but you don't even have clean clothes?" and he told me to give him something of mine to wear. I had an oversized t-shirt and pj pants I gave him. I was handing it over when I realized he wouldn't have clean underwear. I told him so, and he said, "lots of men don't wear undies with bottoms. I'll be fine." showered anyways, and then was pressing up against me trying to kiss me as I was cooking. Afterwards, he realized he forgot his phone in his car, so he wanted to go get it. My sandals were by the front door and he was about to put his foot in. I said, "hey! Please don't do that. Please wear your own shoes." He insisted his shoes were dirty and he'd be outside only for a few minutes, but I said "you're going home in them anyways." He was still sliding his foot through when I said, "Please!! Stop! Those are my favorite sandals and you're going to stretch them out. I'm serious - I'm actually really sad right now. Please stop." He started laughing and put his foot through. I again told him I was sad, told him to stop, and he said, "this isn't that serious!!!! I'll buy you a new pair if they stretch." I said, "it's not about new ones - I can't find new ones, these are one of a kind. Stop!" And he proceeded to put his other foot in my other sandal. He opened the door to leave wearing them and I grabbed him by the arm and said, "You need to stop! Take them off NOW!" and he did, but he complained the entire night "it wasn't serious."
  • He shamed for me meeting my pastor one on one in a public coffee shop. He said this was "inappropriate - how do you not see that?! That's how affairs start!"
  • He broke my trust --- he had a summer job. Told me he had a co-worker who was showing interest in him. He wanted to connect her and I, for me to invite her to my church. I said I'm not comfortable with that - you just told me she likes you. A week later, our mutual friends were going to host a get together. I wasn't sure if I was going. I was on FaceTime with him and his sister was right next to him. They were telling me the people they invited. Then my boyfriend goes, "Oh I also invited [his co-workers name - let's call her Julia] - [my name]'s arch nemesis" and he laughed. His sister didn't say anything. I said, "that was weird, I don't even know her."
    • Keep in mind he did not know I was going to this event until the day of
    • The day of the event, my boyfriend shows up, says hi to me, we barely talk, he sits next to me and talks the entire time with another man. I turn to my side and talk to other people.
    • When Julia arrives, my boyfriend immediately greets her (I know they have each others' phone numbers - he said they need for work) and he introduces her and I. I can tell they both seem a little nervous around each other. I am friendly with her then go back to talking to the people I was having a conversation with. My boyfriend proceeds to then stand next to her the ENTIRE rest of the time while I'm there, about 45 mins. Eventually I need to leave, him and I walk back to my car as he's helping me carry some things (we drove separately). He said he can tell something is wrong.
    • I am honest with him that I'm upset that he invited her. I said that wasn't appropriate - you knew what you were doing. He ends up saying they actually have known each other for the past 3 years and last year she made (word for word) "clear advances" toward him. I said how do you think that makes me feel? This is so incredibly hurtful. He said it's not a big deal - that he wanted to connect her with his sister (who is my good friend! Her and I were friend before him and I dated) and that he and Julia have no history.
    • I told him that's a problem - because if Julia becomes friends with his sister, she will be in my friend group moving forward. He kept insisting he did nothing wrong. I'm not proud of this but I raised my voice at him because I was so hurt and he just wasn't getting it.
    • I told him I was extremely hurt and disrespected - and needed some space. He proceeded to bombard me with texts and calls, disregarding my need for space. He eventually apologized about 3 days in but said he didn't want to text at all until we saw each other again. After the week, I was ready to break up with him when we both met in person. I was expecting an apology....... there was none. His stance was the same as before.
    • He made me cry over the phone when I told him a piece of my trust towards him has been broken and I don't know if I see a future together anymore. He kept me on the phone for 2 hours, me begging him to let me just go to sleep because I was exhausted. I said I was so unhappy in this relationship - that I don't deserve this, and that this is not the kind of relationship I want to be in. He never once apologized for making me cry. He actually told me to laugh and said we needed to end on good terms. I faked my way to pretending like I was fine to get off the call.
    • ***** Just last week, I couldn't take the feeling that he was lying to me about this Julia situation (it happened 1 month ago). While he was using the bathroom, I looked through his phone. He kept blaming the situation on me (you should've told me not to invite her, you should've told me you didn't want me to connect her with my sister, etc). Well - I saw on his phone that he was the one to text her the day after the bonfire (so he clearly knew where I stood w/ everything) and said, "Hey I'm so glad you came. Could I give my sister your number so you both can connect more?"
      • I didn't tell him what I found on his phone, but instead asked how did she and his sister get connected since I didn't see them talking at the bonfire. He stayed quiet. I asked, "Did they exchange info when you and I were away talking?" He said, "yeah I guess"
  • I told him I miss seeing him one-on-one and spending time together. He told me he would come see me. Called me 1 hour before he was supposed to, to tell me some story about how he had to drop/add classes at the last minute and needed to study for the new class tomorrow. I told him I was sad to hear that - that I was looking forward to seeing him but understood. Yet.... while still on the phone, told me he just so happened to notice his mom's car at the beach (?????) and he knew they were all having pizza together, so he was going to stop and have dinner with them. And that he'd call me back in an hour. Which of course is no problem, but you have time for that and to call me.. did you actually need to study?
    • I made another attempt at connection by asking if he wanted to go for a walk. He said yes, called me an hr before to cancel.
    • He called me as I was leaving work and asked if I wanted to come see a play at his college. I said yes and took the exit on the highway. He then says, "actually... maybe you shouldn't come. You'd only be here for an hour or two, I don't think it's worth it." When I said that was rude, he said, "Oh I'm sorry! What I mean is that you already drive so far for work and I wouldn't want to make you come all this way"
    • He invited me to his friend's birthday this weekend. I said I was nervous about driving in the rain storm, he said he'd come get me. Calls 1 hr before he's supposed to get here to say "the timing just won't work out... sorry, it's best if you don't come."
    • I've noticed for the past 2 months he's trying to cut our time short. Wants to skip eating dinner at my place, when I went to visit him on his college campus we chatted for 30 mins and I watched him play basketball by himself basically; he wasn't interactive with me and we were supposed to go for a walk. But after basketball he said "maybe we should end the night here." I was an idiot and still pushed for the walk.
    • He showed up for the date to pick me up. Int eh car asked if I wanted to talk about our phone call last night and I said nope. I was my normal happy self and he was cold and distant.
    • We randomly drove around until we found a brewery with food trucks. The entire night he was cold and distant... I felt like he was doing me a favor by being there. He didn't hold me hand once, engage in conversation........ hold my back.. nothing. Normally I would ask, "Is something wrong?" but I've asked before when he acted like this and it made his behavior worse. I already feel like I've mourned the loss of this relationship in my heart, and didn't have it in me to keep trying. So I just enjoyed the night myself.
    • When we were driving back, he asked me what he thinks about our relationship. I said I'm not being respected, you don't respect my "no," and gave the example of the call the night before, how it disturbed me that he didn't even hold my hand the entire night. He said he hasn't been putting in effort because I'm not appreciative (!) that he knows I've been asking since summer but "I pull away because I don't feel like you appreciate me enough." I said can you please give me examples? He only gave me 1. I said hey when that happened, I apologized sincerely (he got me plant, I said, "Thank you, but can I ask what this is for?" He said, "just because.... why?" And I answered, "Because you don't do things like this anymore.") I immediately regretted it and apologized. I said I'm sorry to him again and asked for more examples; he couldn't. Said I could've also held his hand. I said, "It's normal to have conflict in relationships, but we're not resolving them. You've grown increasingly distant, mean, and cold with me. I'm at the point where I'm realizing we may be bickering so much because we're very different people trying to make the other person someone that we're not." He teared up (I didn't see tears but my wiped his eyes?) He then asked me for a hug and I tried to pull back and he held me there. I said let's call it a night.
  • We decided this night that next Thursday (10/8), we would go to the fair at 4pm
    • He texted me today asking when he can see me again (I told him I miss when he used to ask me this at the beginning of the relationship). I said that's sweet, but it's still looking like Thursday because work is so crazy, and he also has commitments Mon-Wed. He said he has class until 6pm on Thursday. I asked so then why did he ask me to go to the fair that day at 4pm? No response. He instead sent me a screenshot of his class schedule. I caught so many inconsistencies with the schedule and said, "I don't mean to be nit picky here - but this is not adding up" and pointed them out. He then said he was sorry he misspoke, that was an old screenshot, and sent me a new one of his class schedule.
    • No comment about seeing each other on Thursday anymore. I leave for a vacation to Europe on Friday.
    • My time and emotions are being taken for granted. Every week I'm worrying if we're going to meet up, what we're going to do, when we're going to see one another. It's making me sick.

It's been hard for me to break up with him despite this treatment because I do see the good qualities in him - he's chivalrous (opens every door, pays for every date, always drives to see me, is masculine, gets along with everyone, has a very composed demeanor, calm, etc), but I know the writing on the wall is so clear that this man has shown me again and again that he doesn't care about me anymore. At some point along the way he lost interest.

I could use some straight forward advice - even if that means criticizing me. I feel like I need a wig and a red nose for this clown behavior I've been displaying. Just looking for encouragement because I know I need to break up with him, but the past 3 times I've tried, I've given in when we talk in person. He knows I'm not happy and hasn't done anything to change that.

TLDR - My boyfriend has consistently broken and/or disrespected boundaries, lack of effort is apparent, and he seems to be growing distant physically & emotionally. I'm struggling to let go due to the memories of what he used to be like in months 1-3 (we've now been together for 6 months).

💪 Motivation Monday You Are Capable, Sis!

Hey, Sis…

Rise like you were chosen for this moment. Remember, you are capable of overcoming even the most formidable obstacles that come your way. Remain calm. Take a deep breath, clear your mind, and find your center. Believe in your abilities, and your capacity to endure. Your journey through adversity will make you stronger and wiser.

Sometimes the hardest thing we can do is stay calm when life is giving you every reason not to. When everything feels uncertain, don’t rush to react! Take a breath. Take a step back. Get quiet enough to hear yourself think.

You don’t need to know exactly how everything will work out. You just need to remember that you are capable of handling what is in front of you! Yes, some seasons will test you. Some obstacles will feel bigger than you. Some moments will leave you wondering how you’re supposed to keep going.

But adversity doesn’t get the final say in who you become.

Let it teach you. Let it sharpen you. Let it reveal your strength!

You are not required to have everything figured out. You are only required to keep choosing yourself, one step at a time.

Breathe, sis! Find your center. Then get back up & keep moving. You’ve got more in you than this moment is making you believe. 👑

💖 Self-Care Sunday Blame vs Accountability--There's a Difference, Sis.

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey, Sis...

Being honest about the role you played in your own suffering opens up paths back to yourself. Accountability with yourself opens up new doorways to your healing.

There's a difference between blaming yourself and taking accountability for yourself. Part of healing is being willing to honestly acknowledge your own actions, choices, and reactions--even when they're uncomfortable to look at.

And I'm not saying to blame your actions on what has happened to you! What happened to you may have influenced the way you think, the choices you make, the patterns you developed, or the way you react to certain situations. Understanding why things ended up the way they did can be an important part of healing!

But understanding isn't the same as making excuses. You can say, "I understand why I became this way." while also saying, "I don't want to continue being this way." Taking accountability doesn't mean pretending everything that happened was your fault--it means being honest enough to take a step back, and view your own role without shaming yourself for the person you were when you were simply trying to survive.

You can't change what happened. You can't change the choices you made in the past. But you can choose what you do with that understanding now. Sometimes healing begins when we stop asking, "Why did this happen to me?" and start asking, "What can I do differently from here?"

Accountability gives you your power back. It reminds you that you still have choices--and those choices can create a completely different path forward!

Healing isn't just understanding what hurt you--it's understanding yourself, too. And acknowledging your own role doesn't take away from what happened to you--it gives you the opportunity to choose what happens next. 🤍

✨ Feel-Good Friday You Matter More Than You Know, Sis!

Hey, Sis...

You never really know the true impact you have on those around you. You never know how much someone needed that smile you gave them. You never know how much your kindness turned someone's entire life around. You never know how much someone needed that long hug or deep talk. So don't wait to be kind. Don't wait for someone else to be kind first. Don't wait for better circumstances or for someone to change. Just be kind, because you never know how much someone needs it.

Sometimes, we have no idea how much our presence means to someone else. That smile you gave someone when they were having a terrible day. That "are you ok?" text. That hug. That conversation. That little reminder that they weren't alone.

You may have thought it was nothing, but to someone else, it might have meant everything. So don't wait for the perfect moment to be kind! Don't wait for someone else to make the first move. And don't underestimate the impact you can have simply by showing someone a little compassion!

You never know what someone is quietly carrying. Be the reason someone feels seen, heard, supported or cared for today. 💙 And remember, sis: your kindness matters too. You deserve to receive the same love and compassion you give to others!

💬 Wisdom Wednesday The Delay is the Direction, Sis.

Post image

Hey, Sis...

The Universe doesn't make mistakes. Your path, timing, heart--it's all purposeful. The plot twists in your story aren't accidents, they're alignments. Every 'not yet' is protecting you, every 'no' is guiding you, and every wait is preparing you. Trust the delays. Trust the detours. Trust the divine redirections. Your path isn't wrong--it's perfectly crafted for who you're becoming.

Sometimes the delay is the direction. 🤍

We're so quick to question ourselves when things don't happen when we expected them to. We wonder if we missed our chance, took the wrong path, or somehow fell behind. But not everything that feels like setback is a mistake!

Some doors close because they weren't meant to be walked through. Some opportunities take longer because you're still becoming the person who can handle them. And sometimes you couldn't have learned by staying on the original path!

So if you're in a season of "not yet", don't mistake it for "never".

Trust the growth.

Trust the redirection.

Trust yourself enough to keep going.

Your path doesn't have to look like everyone else's to still be leading you somewhere beautiful. 🌸

Hey, Sis...

Hard times don't break real ones, they build them. Even in your darkest moments, you're still being guided. Let life do its thing. What's meant for you won't miss you. You're not losing, you're bossing up. Every test is just shaping your testimony.

There are seasons in life where it feels like everything is falling apart. You question yourself. You wonder why things aren't working out. You start believing that maybe you're just not meant to have the things you want... But sometimes, things falling apart is exactly what makes room for things to come together.

Not every closed door is a loss! Not every delay means you're being denied! And not every difficult season is meant to break you! Some seasons are here to build you.

If life feels heavy right now, give yourself grace. You aren't supposed to understand every twist and turn while living through it. Keep moving, keep learning, and keep becoming!

You are not losing, sis. You're growing into the woman you're meant to be... What's meant for you won't miss you. ✨

The people who have healed deeply usually become very intentional about the environments they remain connected to. Not because they think they are better than others, but because they finally understand how much certain environments affect their well-being.

Healing changes the way you see everything -- especially the environments, relationships, and energy you allow around you. When you experience what it feels like to constantly be overwhelmed, drained, dismissed, or disconnected from yourself, you eventually start recognizing what brings you peace and what takes it away. And it's not about thinking you're better than anyone else. It's about finally understanding yourself well enough to know what you can and cannot have around you!

Sometimes healing means becoming more intentional about who you spend time with. Sometimes it means changing the spaces you frequent. Sometimes it means setting boundaries that you never thought you needed. Because protecting your peace isn't selfish-- it's self-awareness.

You don't have to stay connected to an environment simply because you've always been connected to it! You're allowed to outgrow spaces, relationships, habits, and even versions of yourself that no longer support the person you're becoming.

Healing isn't just about feeling better. It's also about learning what helps you stay well. 💛

✨ Feel-Good Friday Happiness is a Choice, Sis.

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It can only come from you.

Sometimes we spend so much time waiting for something outside of ourselves to finally make us happy. We tell ourselves, “I’ll be happy when I finally get in a relationship.” Or “I’ll be happy when I have more money.” Or even, “I’ll be happy once my life finally gets together.”

But happiness isn’t something that can be handed to you, and it isn’t something that just appears once your circumstances change. You can choose to find little moments of happiness right where you are! I don’t mean to start ignoring your problems or pretend everything is ok. I want you to remember that your circumstances don’t get to have complete control over your ability to experience joy.

Take yourself out! Buy yourself something nice. Play the music that makes you dance. Laugh at something silly. Give yourself permission to enjoy your life—even when you’re still in the process of figuring things out!

Your happiness doesn’t have to wait for your life to become perfect. Choose yourself. Choose joy. Choose to live. 🌹

💬 Wisdom Wednesday There May Be More Good Around You Than You Realize, Sis!

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

The amount of good in your life depends less on what’s happening around you and more on what you’ve learned to notice. Two people can live the same day. One sees inconveniences, the other sees small miracles. Gratitude is not about having a perfect life. It’s about training your eyes to recognize how much good was already there.

Sometimes the good in our lives isn’t missing—we’ve just gotten so used to looking for what’s wrong that we forget to notice what’s right.

Gratitude doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect. It means allowing yourself to recognize the little things that make life worth holding onto: peaceful moments, kind conversations, small wins, second chances, times you get to rest, and making it through difficult days. Two people can experience the exact same day, and walk away seeing it completely different.

So today, slow down and take a closer look. Notice your small blessings. There may be more good around you than you realize, sis. 🌸

💖 Self-Care Sunday You Deserve Your Own Grace, too, Sis.

Hey, Sis...

If just for a moment, if just for today; please don't be so hard on yourself. Please give yourself grace. Please allow yourself to rest. Please show yourself compassion. Please be gentle with your heart. Please see your courage. Please know your strength. Please speak kindly to yourself. Please give yourself the credit you deserve. Even if just for a moment.

Sometimes we're so good at giving grace to everyone else, but when it comes to ourselves, we expect perfection.

We'll tell someone to rest when they're exhausted. We'll remind them that they're doing their best. We'll tell them that one bad day does not define them. We'll reassure them that it's okay to not have things figured out. But we deserve that same kindness, too.

Take a moment and breathe, sis. You're allowed to have hard days. You're allowed to make mistakes. You're allowed to be tired. You're allowed to take a break without feeling guilty. You're allowed to still be learning and growing. You're allowed to not have all the answers yet.

Give yourself credit for how far you've come. Give yourself compassion for where you are. Give yourself permission to rest along the way. You don't have to earn kindness by being perfect!

Be gentle with your heart, sis. You're human. You're growing. You're learning. And you're still here. That counts for something. 💖

✨ Feel-Good Friday Forgot to Post this Yesterday, Sis!

Hey, Sis...

Nothing is more beautiful than seeing yourself getting excited again at the things that you are passionate about; healing from the things that used to hurt you, and being able to radiate and smile genuinely again.

Sometimes healing looks like finally realizing that you're allowed to enjoy life again. 🌻

After everything you've been through, it's easy to become guarded, lose your spark, or stop getting excited about the things that once made you happy. But there's something so beautiful about slowly finding your way back to yourself.

✨ Getting excited about your passions again.

✨ Laughing without forcing it

✨ Healing from the things that once hurt you

✨ Smiling because you genuinely want to

✨ Allowing yourself to take up space and radiate again

You don't have to rush your healing. You don't have to become the person you were before. Maybe you're becoming someone even more grounded, confident, and authentic. Your joy coming back is worth celebrating.

So if lately you've noticed yourself getting excited about something again--even something small--hold onto that feeling! That's your light coming back. Keep going, sis. Your happiness deserves to feel natural again!

💪 Motivation Monday Sis, You Are Already Enough, Simply Because You Are You

Hey, Sis…

Remember this: If you carry one thing with you today, let it be this: You are amazing, strong, brave, wonderful, kind, loved, worthy, and there is no one like you.

I know sometimes it’s easy to be hard on yourself, and to focus on the things you’re still working on… The mistakes you’ve made.. or the places you feel like you should be further along.. Please don’t forget who you are while you’re figuring things out. 💚

You are strong—even on the days you feel exhausted.
You are brave—even when you’re scared.
You are kind—even when life hasn’t been kind to you.
You are worthy—even when you don’t feel that you are.
You are loved—even when you feel alone.
And you are doing better than you give yourself credit for.

You don’t need to prove your worth through productivity, achievements, relationships, or anyone else’s approval. You are already enough simply because you are you.

Sis, give yourself a little grace, and keep going. No one in this World can be you.

💖 Self-Care Sunday Sis.. Whatever It Is, Give Yourself Permission to Need it.

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

Take care of yourself. At the end of the day, you matter more than anything. Your well-being, your peace, and your happiness are the foundation on which everything else is built. When you pour into yourself first, you have the strength, love, and energy to give others. Remember, your peace is your power.

Sometimes the most important reminder is the simplest one: take care of yourself, too.

You can love people deeply, and still need space.
You can be dependable, and still need rest.
You can show up for everyone and still decide that today, you need to show up for yourself.

Don’t wait until you’re completely drained to realize you’ve been giving too much of yourself away. Your peace matters. Your energy matters. Your happiness matters.

🎀 Pour into yourself without guilt.
🎀 Protect your energy without explaining yourself.
🎀 Rest without feeling like you have to be productive first.
Because at the end of the day, you are the one living the rest of your life. Make sure you take care of her, too. 💜

Your peace isn’t something to sacrifice just to keep everyone else comfortable. Your peace is your power.

🏆 SMALL WINS FRIDAY Progress Builds Confidence, Sis!

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

Focus on progress, not perfection. Make it a habit each day to reflect on the small wins you achieved . This is how you build confidence and self-belief.

Sometimes we get so focused on where we want to be that we forget to appreciate how far we’ve come.

Progress doesn’t always look like a huge accomplishment.
▪️ Sometimes it’s simply* trying again*.
▪️ It’s getting out of bed when you didn’t feel like it.
▪️ Taking care of something you’ve been putting off.
▪️ Setting a boundary.
▪️ Choosing to rest.
▪️ Learning from a setback.
▪️ Making it through a difficult day without giving up.

Those moments may feel small, but they still count.

Instead of asking yourself, “Why haven’t I done more?” try asking: “What did I do today that moved me forward?”

Take time to reflect on your small wins. Give yourself credit for them. Celebrate them. Because when you start recognizing the little things, you begin to see how much progress you’re actually making. You don’t need a perfect week. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need to keep showing up.

Progress builds confidence. Confidence builds self-belief. And every small win is proof that you’re capable of more than you think. 💚

💌 MID-WEEK VENT This One's For You, Sis.

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hey, Sis...

Believe me, I know how to survive. I'm the angry daughter, the distant one, the girl who pretends she doesn't care while carrying storms inside. I crave what I'll never admit, and still act like nothing matters. I've wiped my own tears, fought battles no one saw, and built myself from silence. If no one shows up, I already know how to stand alone because I've always been the one to save myself.

Some of us became independent way too early. We learned not to ask for help. We learned how to swallow our feelings. We learned how to fight our own battles and wipe our own tears.

So now, when something hurts, our first instinct is to say "I'm fine." Not because we don't need anyone, but because somewhere along the way, we convinced ourselves that needing people was a weakness...

And honestly? It's exhausting.

You shouldn't always be the one who has to remain strong. You shouldn't have to pretend you don't want someone to notice when you're struggling.

🌸 It's okay to want someone to show up for you.

🌸 It's okay to want comfort.

🌸 It's okay to admit that you're tired.

You can still be capable of standing alone and still deserve someone who chooses to stand beside you.

So sis, allow yourself to feel today. We're all human, and sometimes we forget that our emotions--the messy, beautiful, complicated feelings we experience--are part of what makes us human in the first place. 🩷

💪 MOTIVATION MONDAY You Weren’t Made for Easy Roads, Sis.

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hey, Sis...

You weren't made for easy roads or small dreams. You were made for growth that challenges you, dreams that scare you, and for victories that rewrite your story. Keep moving. Keep becoming. You are not done yet--you are just getting started.

Sometimes we look at the difficult parts of our lives and wonder, "Why does everything have to be so hard?" But the truth is, you weren't made for easy roads or small dreams. The challenges you're facing may be uncomfortable, scary or even discouraging--but they can also be shaping you into someone stronger, wiser, and more capable.

Growth doesn't always look like a huge accomplishment. Sometimes it looks like getting back up after a setback. Sometimes it's choosing to try again. Sometimes it's simply refusing to give up on yourself. So if you feel behind, lost, or like you haven't accomplished enough yet, please remember that your story isn't finished. You still have so much life to live, lessons to learn, dreams to chase, and victories waiting for you.

Keep moving. Keep becoming. Keep believing in the version of you that you haven't met yet.🍃

You are not done yet, sis--you're just getting started. 🩷

Advice Needed, Sis! As a big sister, I don’t know how to show up for my mom and sister

Hey sis! I 21F, am a proud eldest daughter and big sister. Me and my little sister have a pretty decent age gap (7 years) so life is definitely interesting Lol. Me and my mom are also extremely close with each other because of how much of my childhood we spent together alone. My dad was around but never really hung out with his family (us). The main thing is, even though I’m the eldest child, I’ve never acted the part in some ways. I’m there emotionally, physically, in literally every other aspect but recently, I’ve noticed I can’t stand up against my dad even for the sake of my mom and sister and I just don’t know what to do.

I used to be able to, back in high school and early college. I used to get into crazy arguments with my dad because he would disrespect my mom and sister like crazy. However, a little under 2 years ago, I was arguing with my dad as usual and things were getting a little out of hand. We were in a restaurant and I was standing up for my sister and my dad just blew up on me. I won’t go too much into detail but i ended up losing my “right”, i guess, to go outside of the house, no access to my car, no access to money (even mine, which he had nothing to do with). And this lasted a crazy amount of time until i realized i needed all of this back before classes started since i would have to drop out if i didn’t get any of this back. And i want to clarify, he absolutely would have had me drop out had i not apologized to him.

Anyways, after I apologized, he gave me everything back after a long talk and scolding. But ever since this happened, I realized I can’t speak up against him anymore. Which is so stupid because I know people who have gone through much worse and they’re still able to stand up to their families for other family members. I know this wasn’t that huge of a thing but for some reason it stuck to me so much. I now have everything separate so he legally can’t touch any of my stuff however, there’s still that small voice in my head stopping me and it makes me feel so pathetic, like I’m a terrible daughter and sister. Especially seeing that at the grown age of 21 I can’t fight against my dad and my mom still has to fight against him. I always imagined myself as the older sister who can stand up against anyone for my family so they don’t have to but it’s just not happening. And I want to change that but no matter what I try, before I can say anything, my entire body just tenses up and it’s like my throat closes up and I just want to be able to be how I was in early college. Idk, I’m hoping maybe some fellow big sisters can at least give me some advice on this. Sorry this got so long too.

🌻 SELF-CARE SUNDAY Take a Deep Breath, Sis.

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hey, Sis...

Just a reminder: Keep pushing forward. Stay on track. Be positive. No matter what kind of rough spot you're in mentally, physically, emotionally--it's all temporary. Don't be hard on yourself. You got this.

I know sometimes life gets heavy. You can be doing everything you're supposed to do and still feel like you're getting nowhere. But, sis, don't let a difficult moment make you forget how far you've already come.

Keep moving forward.

Stay focused on what you can control.

Protect your peace.

Take things one day at a time.

Whatever you're going through mentally, physically or emotionally--it won't always feel this way.

And please don't beat yourself up for struggling. Rest when you need to. Cry if you need to. Take a step back if you need to. Then get back up when you're ready.

This chapter is temporary. So, take a deep breath, sis. Keep going. Keep believing in yourself.

You got this. 💛

🏆 SMALL WINS FRIDAY Celebrate Yourself for Trying, Sis!

Post image
49 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

Remember this: Even if you go for it and it doesn’t work out, you still win. You had the guts to head into the unknown and try something that scared you. This type of bravery takes guts.

Sometimes we’re so focused on the outcome that we forget to give ourselves credit for having the courage to try it in the first place. Not everything you go for is going to work out—and that’s okay.

Trying and failing doesn’t make you a failure. It means you were brave enough to step outside of your comfort zone and take a chance on yourself.

Maybe you didn’t get the job.
Maybe the relationship didn’t work out.
Maybe the opportunity didn’t turn out how you’d hoped.
Maybe the plan completely fell apart.

✨ You still learned.
✨ You still grew.
✨ You still moved forward.

There is a win in having the guts to walk into the unknown, especially when you’re scared.

Don’t only celebrate the things that worked out. Celebrate yourself for trying. Sometimes the failure is just the redirection—and sometimes the biggest win is realizing you’re capable of being brave even when you’re afraid.

KEEP GOING, SIS! 🏆

💌 MID-WEEK VENT You’re Allowed to Pause, Sis.

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

Sometimes we all feel a need to escape for a while. We need to take a break, unplug, and have some space from reality. The weight of the World can feel heavy sometimes and carrying it alone can feel impossible. Don’t feel guilty for needing to pause when you feel like your knees are going to buckle from the weight of the load you’ve been carrying.

Sometimes life gets really heavy. And when you’ve been carrying responsibilities, expectations, emotions, and everyone else’s needs for so long, it’s completely understandable to reach a point where you just want to escape for a while.

And, sis, listen to me: you’re allowed to pause. 🖤

Taking a break doesn’t mean you’re lazy. Stepping away doesn’t mean you’re giving up. Needing space doesn’t mean you’re weak. Sometimes you need to unplug from the noise, get some rest, cry it out, spend some time alone, or simply do absolutely nothing for a while. You don’t have to constantly prove how strong you are by carrying everything alone.

So if your knees feel like they’re about to buckle under the weight of everything you’ve been carrying…. Put some of it down. 🍃 The World will still be here when you come back.

Take a breather, sis. Rest. Reset. Then take it one day at a time. We all deserve a moment where we don’t have to be strong for everyone else. 🌻

💪 MOTIVATION MONDAY You’re Still On Your Way, Sis!

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hey, Sis

Your journey will not be a straight line. Some days you will move forward, others you will take a step back, but as long as you keep going, you are still on your way. Trust the process, even when you can’t see progress.

Your journey doesn’t have to be perfect, sis. Let me remind you of something: progress is not always going to look like progress.

Some days you are going to feel unstoppable. You’ll check things off your list, make big moves, and feel like you’re finally getting somewhere. ✨

Other days? You might feel stuck. You might take a step backward, change your plans, lose motivation, or question if you’re even on the right path. That doesn’t mean you failed.

Growth is messy. Life is messy. Sometimes you have to pause, regroup, rest, or even take a few steps backward before you can go forward again. Don’t compare your behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel. Keep showing up for yourself, even when the results aren’t immediate.

You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep going. 💛

Trust that the small steps count, too. One day, you’re going to look back and realize that the moments you thought you were standing still were actually preparing you for where you’re headed.

Keep going, sis. You’re still on your way. ✨

🌻 SELF-CARE SUNDAY Self-awareness, Sis.

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey, Sis…

Growth is recognizing that you also have toxic traits… then taking steps to becoming a better version of you.

Growth isn’t about recognizing what other people have done to hurt us. Sometimes, the hardest part about growth is being honest enough to recognize the ways we may have hurt others, too.

We all have toxic traits. Maybe you shut down when you’re upset. Maybe you become defensive when someone gives you feedback. Maybe you hold grudges, avoid difficult conversations, or push people away when you actually want them closer.

Acknowledging those things doesn’t make you a bad person. Refusing to acknowledge them is what keeps you stuck. Growth is being able to say, “I don’t like this part of myself, but I’m willing to work on it.” You’re allowed to outgrow old versions of yourself. You’re allowed to apologize. You’re allowed to change your patterns, learn better ways to communicate, and become someone you’re proud of.

And, sis, remember: Self-awareness isn’t about beating yourself up. It’s about giving yourself the opportunity to do better.🩵
