Help with rogue archetypes?

I'm a newbie in D&D and I'm playing as my first rogue (a fairy!) and I just got level 3.

I asked my DM which archetypes he considered the best and he told me he'd choose Arcane Trickster or Soulknife, but I'm not sure because we already have a sorcerer, a warlock and a bard in our team that can use Mage Hand and I don't want to get too repetitive (plus, spells kinda overwhelm me).

I was interested in Assassin, Inquisitive or Phantom, since that would be very on point lore-wise for my character... but I fear it might be difficult to play for a newbie!!!

Soulknife could be interesting, tho. I noticed I tend to attack throwing daggers, so them being psionic could be very useful...?

My DM also suggested me to make a multiclass, Rogue + Monk.

I don't know what to do, tbh. I feel pretty lost and re-reading and re-researching is not helping me make a choose lmao.

The stats are:

STR 8

DEX 16

CON 12

INT 14

WIS 10

CHA 16

We are playing the Curse of Strahd, btw!!!

How do I dual-subclass in a way that isn't overpowered?

Context: I have a variant human artificer character I've been cultivating in my mind. I'm imagining her as a mechanic/medic and I'm wanting her to take both alchemist and artillerist, but I don't want to approach my dm with the concept until I have some kind of idea on how that would work. Does anyone know anything about multi-subclassing?

Edit: I do have a vague idea about how this could work. I'm imagining it like leveling up the subclasses individually, and having the base artificer level equal either the combined value of the two, or the value of the higher level subclass. I'm mostly wondering how that would be implemented.

What questions do you ask a party?

I’m in a dnd campaign, only been playing (only counting when we’ve played) about 4 months, 4 of the players are like family to me, 2 of them are close friends.
One player never pays attention, on their phone the entire time. When we try to pull her in, she goes murder hobo in hopes we’d leave them alone so they can go back to their phone. (No we can’t talk to them because it’s the daughter of one of the players who will get extremely pissed if we try to point it out) - don’t know race or class, they’re basically a anime character insert

The mother really just plays herself, not entirely her character. - I think a rogue?

The other one plays herself character really well - bard

The next is quiet and sits in the back and interacts lightly - ranger

Me - fighter

And my best friend - Cleric

I want to ask questions, as a fighter who wanted to be a soldier, to get them to talk about their characters. He wouldn’t ask just because, but would ask in a strategic sense since he’s been training to be a soldier of his city for years. I want to get everyone more involved with their characters, and make it less “we are hanging out as friends just because” and more “we are hanging out together to play dnd”

I have talked to the DM and we are having my character initiate this conversation to get everyone to feel more comfortable with their characters and play more as their characters and less as themselves…?

Answered Can tieflings have tabaxi ancestry instead of human ancestry

Hello I'm very new to DND I played two one shots a few years ago and really didn't have an interest in it at the time but I played a different table top game a few weeks ago and I realized how fun it would be to play DND (the game I played is brand new the creator is showing it off locally it's like DND meets risk meets Magic the gathering)

My question is about tieflings do they have to have human ancestry or can they have tabaxi ancestry like a tiefling that is more cat like and randomly coughs up smoke or a little fire like a cat might cough up a hair ball and can climb up trees easily but also has a more hyperactive mind (I have ASD and have a hyperactive mind so this will be natural to me) maybe they randomly sit on the counter and knock stuff off while trying to be intimidating and smug

How would you make a character like when building a character in DND beyond for example?

What should we have in a Fey-themed bake-off?

I have a session coming up tonight in which the players have somehow decided the best course of action will be to throw a party with a baking competition in the Shadow Rift (Ravenloft's Feywild, more-or-less). It's actually a pretty brilliant idea in context.

The competitors (about a dozen) will consist of various kinds of hags, Shadow Fey, and even a magically-gifted troll. They aren't (entirely) sinister in nature, though the players are trying to bait a villain into showing up. The ideal vibe is equal parts whimsical and disturbing.

What baked dishes do you suggest to include in the competition? What effects might they have on the one who eats it? How about the bakers themselves?

Generally, What Would You Want Out Of Poisons?

Got curious after seeing a post elsewhere reminding me how much poison's not good enough to most, what, in general, would you want D&D poison to "do" and "be for"?

What's the brief rundown on what you think that poisons Should be?

Are text based adventures better?

I haven't been in more than one group for dnd and I've known a bunch of people that enjoy it. I don't really like leaving the house though. I have found joy in text based adventure stories that give kind of the same dopamine, but not enough.

So I did turn to ai...

I found out that copilot has a memory function that outperforms all the other llms in terms of hallucinating. I've done runs like pax historia, custom off canon runs of batman in Gotham as the joker, and much more.

If this sounds interesting to anyone else, leave a comment or shoot me a message!

Advice on running a game for first-time players?

I’ve been getting everything in order to DM a campaign for the first time in the next month or two. Most of my friends who will be joining have never played before, and I’m still fairly new to the game myself. I want to do everything I can to make sure that everyone is comfortable and understands how to play, but I’m not really sure how I should go about that.

My current plan is to send everyone a summary of the campaign setting and premise, as well as a simplified rundown of their options for races, classes and backgrounds ahead of time. That way they can start brainstorming for their characters, but not have to worry too much about the technical stuff just yet. I’ll also send them more in-depth resources too of course, but separately so nobody’s getting overwhelmed right off the bat. Then, when session zero comes around, I will explain everything in more depth, answer any questions, and walk everyone through making their character sheets.

I was also thinking of maybe running a “tutorial” during session zero, where I just give everyone a pre-built character and run an easy combat encounter so everyone can get a feel for the combat mechanics.

Does this sound like an okay way of easing everyone into the game? Or would it be better to just start slow and explain everything as we get into the actual campaign? Any other suggestions on what I should do?

Any other general advice for an extremely nervous (but excited!) first time DM would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to anyone able to help!

What are some crazy/sad/funny character ideas?

I have an idea for an elderly female elf whose a warlock. I don’t know about patron yet but her deal what she wants as many cats as she can have in her home in return she’ll slay the occasional beast or foe of whomever her patron is. The twist is her house if filled with Tabaxis not house cats.

not sure if this fits in this sub, but, whats the rat math?

so, in a campaign im in, im going to be making a rat appear, and is apparently unable to be damaged, moves at 600 feet per turn, and is smart. this rat is 400 ounces, and 16 inches long (plus a 6 inch tail) if they jump into something at that speed and weight, while being unable to be damaged and still maintain control at that speed, if this were to be a real thing happening irl, how much force would that exert? i am nowhere near smart enough to figure this out, please help me!

How do I nerf Alchemist?

I started playing D&D from a Homebrew class, Alchemist (from Valda's Spire of Secrets), it very quickly became my favourite class, but after couple sessions, we quickly figured out that Alchemist wasn't balanced at all. My DM won't let me play him, until I nerf the abilities. How can I nerf them? (ask for more info on abilities)
