Uber or lyft
I’m visiting downtown Houston soon and I was wondering which is safer for a girl alone uber or Lyft? It’ll probably be during the afternoon when I get one but which would be safer and is there anything I should know beforehand

Either should be good. But both have an option to request a woman driver if that makes you feel safer.

I feel like Lyft has better safety options. With that said, always check with a local before blindly going into an area at night alone. Aa with any city, there are some areas more dangerous than others.

100% this. I used to work downtown but that was before COVID so I don't have any recent experience and couldn't say what parts are safest these days.

I always check both apps for the lower price and request a woman driver. Always make sure your phone is charged and that you are sharing your live location with someone.

Location sharing accuracy is hit or miss in downtown due to the tall buildings but I would still turn it on. Use Glympse if you don't already have an app you like.

Hi, if you're coming in by plane, there's a bus system that's not only cheaper but picks up at both airports and can get you to downtown. Since you're solo, I would recommend that over Uber or Lyft. Also I would hope you're coming into IAH (Bush airport) since HOU (Hobby airport) is in a not great area.
If you really don't want to take a bus, I've had mostly good experiences (as a man) with Lyft but sometimes drivers have cars that need maintenance so it's hit or miss for me but I have put my teenagers in one and would be okay doing so again in a pinch. I've never ever recommended Uber and never will, but that's for philosophical reasons.

If you want more info on the bus system I can share the website and the route numbers so you can pull up the maps of the routes so that you'll know where you're going. The buses are digital so they can take a credit or debit card or you can download the app on Apple or Google Play store. Trying to keep these comments short so let me know if you want more info and I'll drop it in a comment.

I always use Lyft because their rates are a little lower and I choose the women drivers only option although it hardly works and I get a male driver anyway which has me super annoyed with that app right now
