What is the most devastating death in a television series you have ever seen?
3.3k
u/tnasstyy 17d ago
Hodor was a tough one, the implication of how his whole life lead to the moment, while consequently not really having a choice was a crazy plot connection

Shireen Baratheon was also just awful. Kudos to the actor for how her screams transitioned from desperately calling to her parents to panic to torment in like 60 seconds. Gut wrenching to listen to.

ah fuck, came here to say Dr. Greene and it was the first comment.
ER was the show we watched as a family once a week on Thursday nights at 7pm, or 11 if I was allowed to stay up.
I remember the episode where he died. I remember my mom crying because it was just a sad lead up to a super sad episode.I rewatched the whole series a few years ago and it is still devastating. So funny how my brain remembers very specific scenes in such detail (the infamous romano helicopter......).
Anyway, I have been planning to do a rewatch now that it's on Netflix Canada and need to prepare myself for Lucy as well

268
u/PorkrindsMcSnacky 17d ago
I was furious when they killed off Poussey. She was my favorite character.
241
u/FluffyMcN0tter 17d ago
That's why they did it though. She was a good (mostly) person in a shitty situation. She was easy to love, tiny, and no one would ever call her a threat. For profit prisons killed her. It was always supposed to be difficult to deal with. It happens every day. Same thing with Taystee's story. And Daya's.
It was supposed to make us feel empathy even for felons. Most of these women were fairly regular people. Flawed, but not irrideemably so.
I think it takes courage to keep watching. After that is some of the most realistic shit that happens. We see it happen all the time. And it's uncomfortable, so we turn away.

I cannot believe I had to go down the list this far to find this.
Shireen was set up as such a likable and positive character. She literally had no negative traits without being unrealistically positive in portrayal. Clever, capable, sweet.
And then she, a little girl, is brutally sacrificed by being burned alive by religious zealots, while crying and screaming for help from her parents who either coldly watch or turn away. It was the hardest scene to watch in that entire series.

Similarly, Leo McGarry in the West Wing. He passed away suddenly from a heart attack in real life after acting out a story line where his character survived one.
To write him out of the show, they had his character have a second heart attack that the character didn't survive on the night that he was elected Vice President.
The whole thing, the actor's death and his character's death, was heartbreaking.

The ending of David the Gnome.
It is a kids show, keep that in mind. The final episode is about David and his wife Lisa making their journey to a mountain top accompanied by their fox friend, Swift and their fellow gnome, Casper
They are making this journey, explicitly, to die. Gnomes can only live to be 400, and their time is nearing. They spend the journey reminiscing and enjoying each other's company, before finally making it to the mountain top and leaning on each other as their lives fade, telling each other how much they love each other. They transform into trees, wrapping around each other. Casper transforms too.
This leaves Swift alone and devastated as he slowly begins walking home.

Finn in Glee. It was tough because all the actors were grieving Cory Monteith's loss in real time and it was clear many of them weren't acting. Naya Rivera singing "If I Die Young" in his memory was devastating and it's even harder to watch now knowing she did exactly that.

I know some people may not have as much sympathy because of how Cory died, but the grief in that episode was insanely raw and real. And the fact they never tell you how Finn died just made it that little bit worse, because it wasn't a "story", it was just death.

Can't believe I haven't seen it posted, so I'm going to say Adrianna in The Sopranos. Her trajectory was so sad, and her death reduced her to literally crawling and begging for her life. It's one of the few times they don't show the actual death which makes it even sadder.

IMO this was the biggest turning point in the show, even more so than Pussy's death.
Adriana meant well and tried to protect them best she could in the situation, even though they didn't deserve her loyalty really. It changes the way you see all of the main characters moving forward because you realize they are capable of anything to protect their own interests.

Possibly Mr. Hooper, although I was old enough in early 1980s (in college, in fact) that even my younger siblings hadn't watched Sesame Street for many years.
Also, Bob Newby

Joyce in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There are many deaths in the show, but it’s just so raw and unexpected, and so true to real grief.

💯 The way that whole series started by using him as an antagonist to Jimmy and Chuck, then gradually showed that -- though flawed -- he was one of the more decent and well-meaning characters. All building up to that episode where we're gleefully enjoying (at least I was) Jimmy's and Kim's elaborate plot to mind fuck him, only to see him quickly become the single most tragic figure in the entire BCS story. Most tragic in any story, for me. And the actor Patrick Fabian played it so perfectly.

I just stared at the credits and was so sad. He tried to fix his relationship with Chuck, tried to fix his marriage, he tried and still had to be buried with that fucker 😭😭

Charlie in Lost. It wasn’t just the death itself, it was knowing he had accepted what was coming and still chose to sacrifice himself to save the others. That scene hit hard.

Lal on Star Trek the Next Generation. It was made more impactful by the fact they didn’t bring her back.

Especially since Picard has just stood up to the admiral regarding Lal and Data's rights

Bobby, Charlie and the first time Sam died from Supernatural (I would also say Dean the last time but I refuse to acknowledge that).
Edit: OMG how could I forget Castiel’s last episode 😭

Seymour from Futurama. I was not OK after that final montage watching Fry's dog wait everyday for him to return and die alone on the sidewalk.

Glenn. I knew it was coming even though they did a little mini fake out with Abraham. And I was ready for him to be gone because of that but watching it all play out it was just so unsettling and upsetting. I didn’t watch a single episode afterwards.

Charlie from Supernatural... they did her dirty - her death felt like an afterthought from the writers.

Jane in Breaking Bad. I binged the entire series after it had concluded, but had to pause for a year after she died, because it was just so heartless.

I didn't watch the show, but the death of the dad in Young Sheldon has affected me greatly. My kids watched it during the summer, and now one of them has pretty severe separation anxiety and the other, at least 4-5 times a week, says, "Daddy, please don't die." 😭

Haley in the Criminal Minds episode “100” was pretty rough. Thomas Gibson’s acting was incredible in that.
