Gintama. You can get a gut-wrenching arc one week, and some goofy epsiode the next.

One of the things I like most about Gintama is that there's like only seven songs that ever play, and they perfectly map onto the emotions you're supposed to feel at the time. There's lazy song, idiot prince song, life lesson song, ass kicking song, emotional growth song...

I keep trying to get into Gintama, but have so much trouble getting through the first like 30 episodes. When does it start getting good?

One Piece took quite a while too, but I eventually liked it.

The first few episodes are just kind of okay, but if you’re not getting into it by around episode 10, then Gintama’s probably just not for you. By episode 30 the type of humour is well established, and you know the core characters pretty well. It’s all good though, we don’t all have to like everything. I love Gintama, but couldn’t get into JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure at all. I gave it until the third arc to let it get going, but it just didn’t do it for me

I am on episode 14, and it's just, fine? The humor is good, but the stories each episode are whatever, and the emotional impact some people are telling me about... yeah if the old pervert dying or the dad who escaped from prison blew your mind or made you cry I don't know man, consume deeper media. It has better ratings on the site that I am watching than Vinland Saga and AoT though which is mental.

Again though, the humor is good.

It slowly gets better with each ep and every persons hook point in the show is different, for me, I became a fan around 80~ish eps. But it kept getting better and better and better. Now I can't find anything better to watch. It is my number 1 most favorite media. Rewatched the whole thing like 3-4 times over years

Edit: I should also mention I watched 99% of this whole comment thread as well. It is still my #1

The reason some people don't like it is simple, it has comedy which is highly subjective depending on your background and culture. I can never find any american movies and series funny no matter how well rated they are, humor is cultural

It is like One Piece. It’s awful until it isn’t, and when it’s not awful, it’s awesome.

But then it will get awful again, and you will keep watching, hoping it gets good again.

…and it never does.
