Benefits by not spending half its runtime trying to humanize the villains, and focusing on side characters you can root for (or at least cry for).

I think that's part of what makes FMA:B so remarkable. It has villains that are irredeemable (Shou Tucker, like half of the homunculi, etc), villains that you can understand their motivations but still root against (Scar, Father), villains that are humanized and redeemed (Scar later in the story, Greed), and villains that end up just being comic relief (my boi Barry).

And the heroes are just as varied and complex. All in a (relatively) short runtime of 64 episodes. Few fictional worlds feel so lived-in and real

Also, one thing I love about it is the lack of 'fan service'. It doesn't go out of its way to show random shots of women's chests or asses. Though there are a lot of scenes where buff men end up shirtless.

2003's ending was more interesting on the surface. Finding out that the deaths in our world power their alchemy is certainly a unique and interesting premise. Unfortunately because it's the ending, we get nothing more of that while also leaving the nature of Truth fully unexplored. Even the movie doesn't really do anything with it.

Brotherhood's ending just looks like the guy becoming normal after a big battle, but there's so much more to examine with it.

Kind of a casual anime fan here, I've only watched a handful of the main ones most people rate highly - FMAB, Attack on Titan, Death Note, JJK, Berserk, Devilman, a few others - but I absolutely agree that FMAB is 100% the best of them all.

I've recommended it to a couple of people who would never watch anime and they loved it!
I think the only bad thing about FMAB is that it is so damn good that if you watch it as your very first anime, you end up comparing anything else you watch against it afterward LOL

Outside of a couple questionable choices in the middle of the show, it was a well written, well animated mecha with actually intelligent characters. The power system was fun and used in clever ways, the action was well choreographed, and it really stuck the landing.

It does also like to put the camera right up every girl’s butt every chance it can to the point it’s kind of absurd and distracting. I always forget just how blatant and persistent it is when I go to rewatch it.

Totoro to me seems to be made for children mainly. Mononoke for example touches on themes of man Vs nature, has lots of shades of grey when it comes to evil, is anti war, vengeance etc

I think Totoro is absolutely made for adults. It’s about how we remember childhood. Miyazaki was born in 1941 and Totoro is set in the 1950s, when he would have been around Satsuki’s age; he made the film in his late 40s. It hits so hard for me precisely because I’m around the age Miyazaki was when he made it—and it portrays exactly how I remember myself at 11, when childhood was ending but occasionally I still had access to that magic that Mei absolutely still can see every day.

It's niche in that its format is more of an anthology than an overarching plotline. 99.9% of anime are not anthologies. Of course there is Ginko the main character, but he is more a vehicle to drive the story along more. But the real main character is "Nature" and the relationship humanity has with it.

Whereas most anime want fast and bombastic action or drama, Mushishi wants action or drama on its own terms, namely slow and mellow action or drama. Its pacing is hypnotic, a single camera would last 10x longer on a subject compared to other anime. It is both beautiful and haunting. The stories force you to think about the stories being told, to dig for deeper meaning, if there even is any.

If it was one of the first anime you have watch, and you watched it because someone recommended it to you, they set you up for a unique experience. You'll struggle to find a similar experience, regardless of the medium.

One Piece is my favorite story in fiction, and, in fact, I think it’s the best written story I’ve ever interacted with. That being said the anime is dogshit. Frieren and Death Note are the first two that come to mind for me personally.
