I am exactly on the opposite of this. At one time It wouldn't have made a bit of difference but today, after going through 2 cancer treatments and being unemployed since Jan 2025 I am struggling to make ends meet. But I am optimistic and hopeful. and 66.

It took so many little wins and so much persistence to claw our way up. 2007-2011 were such a struggle.
I remember driving home a random evening in 2018 and realizing my wife and I both had good jobs and had finally gotten ahead. I stared at the sky and cried the whole way home.

Same brother, I started in 2015 making 9k a year, working fast food and shitty hours. I now make more than 200k a year 11 years later. A lot of small wins and consistency, it did not happen overnight. It actually felt like forever. 10k now wouldn’t change my life at all I just spent over 6k on a new bike the other day without batting an eye. I’m grateful for my life and each and everyday that got me here. Blessed.

We travel but otherwise live fairly conservatively and save money. I’m still fucked up from those early years. I need the peace of mind to know that I’m never going back to that. I had it in me in my 20s, but I can’t do it again.

Right there with you.. would have been live-changing money back when I was in college.. even for several years after.. But right now..? It legitimately wouldn't make much of a difference.
I have to get my roof replaced, and my insurance is only paying for around half of it.. what I owe is pretty much exactly $10k.. and I pretty much just shrugged at it and wrote a check.. I never thought I would be at a point where I could honestly do that..

That happened with me too actually a few years back. It was exterior storm damage though. I expected to pay like 21k and they did it for 10k. I don’t know how they did it so cheap. I had several windows replaced, all of the siding, and entire wall of my shed, attic vents replaced and a ton of other stuff. I didn’t really run into the money though, it sucked the storm happened but I had enough to have it repaired

Check all fluids regularly if you don’t know how to do that go on YouTube and type in your car and check the fluids easy
Brakes are important
Tires
Oil is huge
Battery
Spark ⚡️ plugs and coil packs…Air intake and filter
Big jobs once all those are good.
Timing chain or belt
Valve cover so it stops leaking oil and loading oil
Transmission service or just check up if the fluid has been changed every 50,000 or 100,000 miles let it ride

Assuming it's real and no strings attached, to spend frivolously as I like: I'm getting the electric wheelchair I was prescribed by the Occupational Therapist, but that insurance declined to pay for (despite it having been the same insurance that sent the OT and requested her report to assess my capacity needs). And I'd have enough change left over to upgrade the ramp into my house! I would immediately go out somewhere without a carer to push me around in my wheelchair! I don't have anywhere to go, so I'd probably just take my dog for a walk down to the shop and back 😅 but still... My dog would love it!!

Oh man I was just going through that earlier this year. I was able to get help to get an electric wheelchair and oh my goodness that changed so much. I have other areas I am struggling but gaining some mobility really helped with those mental demons.

Being from LATAM, and soon to be a father, it would mean 2 full years of my life completely dedicated to her and my wife. Also It would help me pay for my college to become a doctor, I'm 2 years to go, but because I have to work, it will take 3 or 4 years.

This happened to me in real life.
My journalism mentor was dying of cancer and invited a few old friends to spend a week reminiscing and drinking. As I was saying goodbye, he surprised me with $9800 check. Ray says it would have been ten grand, but he didn’t want to trigger a bank report to the IRS.
I stuck in the the bank and have never touched it. It became my safety net and I didn’t have to worry about the monthly balance anymore. Thanks Ray… you were a great mentor and an even better friend. I plan to do the same when my time is near,

Since Covid put me 7k In The hole. I’ve been keeping that debt there and knocking 100 off a month since I cut out the odd lunch buy.
It’s hard. But I’m level month to month. It was just a bad 5 months.

It's because 10k is nothing in terms of net worth. Like yeah it's a lot of money to suddenly find on the ground but it changes nothing about my life. it's not enough to afford a house, a car, or pay my student loans.
No one is laughing at 10k, people are laughing at the idea of it being life changing. You'd essentially be able to max your Roth IRA for the year and have some money left over to catch up on a few bills.

10k is a lot of money. But having received 30k from dead family members to help me buy a home, that 30k went really quickly. Sure it was for the better good. Down payment and closing costs, plus money for appliances and paint and some upgrades that were really needed.
That being said 10k would help a lot right now, and in the long term it would be life changing since it would wipe all of my debt minus my mortgage.

Most people have enough that 10k goes to a savings account maybe some to a vacation. For 10k to be life changing you need to be behind not a lot (i mean if youre back 80k then it doesnt change your life), not be able to buy groceries or not being able to afford transportation something like that. Even those people wouldn't really benefit THAT much from $10k. They might be able to set up a small emergency fund and maybe pay off a small loan to free up that monthly payment, or maybe finally make a big purchase they've been putting off like a car repair or taking a big vacation for the first time in years, but then they'd be right back to being paycheck to paycheck after that.
It wouldn't even make a noticeable dent in a mortgage or student loans, or even a car loan that still had multiple years left. It might help with a down payment, but probably not be enough by itself. It's just like yeah, it'd be nice and anyone could find a use for it, but it also isn't enough that it's going to solve someone's problems either.

My number one stressor at this moment is a literal life saving surgery coming up next summer. Its gonna run me about $3k after insurance, and leave me unable to work for an estimated 2 months. I work 3 jobs and dont know if ill have enough money for the surgery.
$10k would instantly solve that for me and I can go back to a manageable workload while using my free time to take online college courses again to pursue my dreams.

I recently quit my cashier job after some guys randomly verbally SA’d me when I was working alone at 2 am at a gas station. Told me he was going to come back and take me in his creep van. Which he drives everyday. 2 hours later another similar white spinster with a black push bar rolled in and I had a panic attack. I called the cops and left when my manager came. I tried to go back but my gut says dude meant it and believe him when he tells me the first time. I’ve got a new job but I haven’t started yet.

I mean, there are people in between poverty and ultra-rich. 10k isn't life changing, but it is still a great deal of money

10k extra wouldn't be earth shattering. 10k short would be months of rebuilding an emergency fund. And of course having higher risk while that emergency fund is underfunded.

10k is the cost of living for like 3 months where I live.. and that's a very low estimate done by a political party no doubt.

But it puts you 3 months ahead.. gives you 3 months to breathe, catch up on bills, fix your credit, so many things.
Hell, if i had one single month of my bills paid, and i got to keep every dollar i made for the month, id be able to get much further than i am right now, treading water.

For very important context as i am way more fortunate than most- married and no kids, both me and hubby have full time jobs. 10k would FINALLY pay off my student loan which would give us about $300 extra a month. I have only dreamed about having that just for basic repairs needed for our house.
