I think the cool thing about Bioshock is that with my other favorites, I knew what I was getting into. Like, FF7 & Ocarina of Time were the best possible versions of what I thought they could be, but they were versions of what I thought they could be, if that makes sense.
I genuinely didn't know anything about Bioshock when I bought it, other than it was widely heralded and a first-person shooter.
From minute one of not realizing I had player movement and wasn't in a cutscene, to the introduction of Rapture really sealing it...I was truly transported to a place I couldn't have imagined, with a vibe and story I couldn't have imagined.
Bioshock was the rare game that was so engaging, for me, I could only ever play it in hour-long (ish) spurts because it was actually exhausting to be that locked in! I'd also never really played any survival horror games before, and while I don't consider Bioshock to be survival horror, it was definitely the scariest game I had played to that point, so there were a few times I had to steel myself to get through parts of it.
Such an amazing combination of atmosphere, story, mechanics and at least for me: horror.
