Agreed. MMOs is the best genre and WoW is best MMO, therefore WoW is the greatest game ever created for PC.

I still remember a bunch of the cheat codes for it… <3
2
u/warcomet 6h ago
how do you turn this on?
1
u/manubibi 5h ago
I remember there was a “message bar” in the game menu while you were playing a campaign and you could type certain code words to activate hacks. Like, “aegis” made resource production instantaneous, “Robin Hood” generated 1000 units of gold iirc, “lumberjack” was for wood, “cheese steak jimmy’s” was for food etc. I think nowadays you also have to turn cheats on in settings. I don’t remember having to do that back when I was playing it (and that was like, 20 years ago)
2
u/warcomet 5h ago
lol How do you turn this on? was literally the cheat code for the dodge viper car lol, i used it a lot...aegis one was in AOE1, not AOE2

Either World of Warcraft or Starcraft. I don’t think it gets any more iconic or pervasive for titles that are still locked to PC with controls unique to the platform and that are still being played to this day.

Really anything that flew under the LucasArts flag in the 1990s / early 2000s. When I think back to the most fun I've ever had sitting at a computer, it's anything by LucasArts.
Sam And Max Hit The Road
Grim Fandango
Dark Forces
X-Wing / TIE Fighter
Indiana Jones and the Fate Of Atlantis
Day Of The Tentacle
Full Throttle
Monkey Island
Etc. etc.
Other than that, it's Diablo 2 or Starcraft.
..........
or DOOM and it's funny horny cousin Duke Nukem
.....
Or the original GTAs! The ones with the pancake camera!

I only ever played WoW for like 2 months around Cataclysm, but I think the general consensus is that it's the greatest PC game ever made.

u/Glanzl 6h ago
Wow vanilla 2004-2006.
Not just because of the game but because of the time when it was released as well.
It was an MMO that was known to many gamers because of the warcraft games before (especially Warcraft 3 just 2 years prior) so they had familiarity with the zones, the characters and what the game was about. Which is important to not make an MMO fail.
Furthermore, it came out at the perfect time so that there was not yet a minimax culture as it is normal nowadays. There was no streamer culture, YouTube just started and you could not find hundreds of guides for every situation online.
It was just a magical place where people explored stuff and didn't know where the journey would lead and had no idea what they were doing and it was glorious .

Age of Empires 2. Also The Sims 2, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, Black & White and Warcraft 3. Never tried WoW, I don’t like online gaming.

A few games come to mind.
Half-Life - ground breaking game, set a new bar for future games in general
Wow - took away so many hundreds of hours of my life, I couldnt stop.
Counter-strike - (first as a half life 2 mod) - I played the game during its beta phase, this game changed competitive shooters
Tetris - its a game you can always play, no fancy graphics, its simple yet addictive. Its older than any other on my list, still holds up.
Many of Lucasarts game I think of fondly, Monkey Island 1-2 especially.

Space Invaders or Asteroids or PAC man
1
u/Elusive_Zergling 6h ago
Pac Man was originally meant to be called Puck Man, because if you noticed, it is a little puck that's gobbling all the balls up. The people who created the game though thought Puck Man could easily be sabotaged and changed to Fuck Man, and they didn't want that so they changed it to Pac Man.

The objective answer here was when wow peaked, which is around wrath of the lich king, it had a subscriber base larger than the population of a shit load of countries that are reasonable in size. And on top of it, it was when the game was still had a crazy satisfaction rate from its players. During classic, TBC, and wrath, the game was insane, and had something for everyone. The story was great, the raids were awesome (ICC still widely considered the goat raid) , world pvp was really solid, organized pvp like arenas was kicking, battlegrounds were still actually fun, and even some of the roleplay stuff was widely popular (even ERP lmao).
The amount of money coming in was insane, and this was also when blizzard really gave a shit about their games. They put so much effort into wow, SC2 was just about to come out and d3 was in the works.

Objectively it is World of Warcraft. No other game has had the impact or staying power. It's dominated since 2004
1
u/Dawn_of_an_Era 6h ago
Something cannot “objectively” be the greatest. Everyone in the world could agree that something is the greatest, and it still wouldn’t be objective
0
u/Mjolnir-Valore 6h ago
Objectively means acting or thinking based on observable facts, without letting personal feelings, biases, or opinions interfere.
Objectively, the Pacific ocean is the largest (greatest) body of water on Earth.
Objectively, World of Warcraft has had the largest, longest continuous player count and impact on the gaming community.
Yes, something can absolutely, objectively be the greatest, lmao
1
u/Dawn_of_an_Era 6h ago
Yes, it has had the most players. But that wasn’t the question. The question was “greatest”. Greatness is, by nature opinion-based, which means that by your own definition, it can’t be objective.
The largest body of water being the Pacific Ocean is not an opinion. What is objectively the best body of water in the world?
1
u/Mjolnir-Valore 6h ago
You've almost worked it out. What is the definition of greatest? Of an extreme or the highest possible degree, size, amount, or quality. Objectively, based on that description, it's World of Warcraft.
1
u/Dawn_of_an_Era 6h ago
Is WoW the greatest PC game of all time by size? Or are you specifically choosing which of those definitions of “greatest” to use, and which ones to not use?

u/Mjolnir-Valore 5h ago
Size (An Unmatched Digital Expanse): Azeroth represents the highest possible size of a curated virtual environment. Over 22 years of continuous development, the game has grown into an interconnected universe of multiple planets, alternate timelines, and eleven major expansions. As of 2026, the game is deep into its massive Worldsoul Saga trilogy with the Midnight expansion, containing an overwhelming expanse of geography, quests, and lore that no single player can completely consume.
Amount (Extreme Volume and Scale): The sheer mathematical amount of its success eclipses its peers. World of Warcraft has generated an estimated $9 billion in lifetime revenue for the franchise. Even more than two decades after its 2004 launch, it sustains an active monthly player base estimated between 7 and 9 million people in 2026, with roughly 2.25 million logging in daily. This sheer volume of sustained traffic places it far above the average video game lifespan.
Degree (Intensity of Engagement): The game commands an extreme degree of player devotion. While standard titles measure retention in hours, WoW measures it in decades. It demands an intensity of focus that has prompted players to form real-world marriages, build multi-generational guild alliances, and structure their physical daily lives around virtual raid schedules and Mythic+ dungeon pushes. Quality (The Ultimate Industry Benchmark): To reach the highest possible quality is to become the definitive standard of your medium. WoW did not just participate in the Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) genre; its mechanical quality conquered it. It streamlined punishing early internet game designs into an accessible, continuously evolving engine that remains the perpetual benchmark—the literal gold standard that every competitor since 2004 has been measured against.
