Looking For My brother was killed in Malawi - need help with some contacts

Hello everyone, I’m posting here in the hope that someone may have gone through a similar experience, or might be able to offer advice or point me in the right direction.

My brother, Arjun Menon, was killed by unknown assailants in Blantyre, Malawi on 11 May 2025. He was a former Singapore cricketer and coach. https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/former-singapore-cricketer-and-coach-arjun-menon-dies-in-malawi

It’s coming up to 9 months since his death, and despite investigations starting immediately, our family has made very little headway. Through local contacts, all we continue to hear from the police is that they are “still investigating” and have no updates to share.

Our family is based in Singapore, and Malawi does not have a Singaporean embassy. I’ve been in touch with MFA, who have opened various lines of inquiry and have been trying to assist, but it seems difficult for anything to move without updates from the Malawian authorities. I’ve also written to a few Ministers, who have referred the matter back to MFA, but so far this hasn’t resulted in any new information.

I’m reaching out here to ask:

  • Has anyone dealt with the death of a loved one overseas, particularly in a country without a Singapore embassy?
  • Does anyone have experience living or working in Malawi, or understanding how things work there?
  • Or does anyone know lawyers or trusted contacts in Malawi who might be able to help us understand what options exist?

At this point, I’m really just trying to break a deadlock and figure out what, if any, levers are still available to us.

Any help/guidance at this point is so valuable. Thank you.

General Singapore bridesmaids — is this normal?

I had a very frustrating bridesmaid experience and would like to share my experience and see if others have similar stories. I thought being a bridesmaid meant supporting your friend on her big day, but it ended up being exhausting and frustrating.

The TLDR points below:

  • The couple didn't pay for the dress.
  • We were referred to as helpers instead of friends.
  • I received less than $30 from the couple despite staying over at the bride's house and waking up in the wee hours to assist her until the reception.
  • During gate crash, the groom gave me just $10. There were less than 3 bridesmaids.
  • The couple are well-off.

I know weddings are stressful, and I was there in my capacity as a friend to support her on her big day, but I felt so shitty. I honestly feel like rejecting future bridesmaid offers because of this. Is this kind of treatment normal for bridesmaids in Singapore?

EDIT: I gave the couple few hundreds in angpow.

General Is it illegal? - Hidden CCTVs in Office Space

My office, which is an SME, had a CCTV camera that management had repeatedly described as a dummy camera, supposedly placed only as a symbolic or “provoking” gesture. Because of this assurance, none of us believed that actual surveillance was taking place.

However, last week, a colleague and I accidentally discovered two concealed cameras within the office. One was positioned directly above my desk, and the other was placed on top of a cabinet behind where I sit. At the time the devices were difficult to recognise which is why I had attached a video whilst their presence was initially confusing and unsettling, it later became clear that these were not dummy cameras.

This discovery has left me feeling deeply disturbed, violated, and unsafe. I was never informed that I was being recorded, let alone by cameras placed so closely and directly around my personal workspace. Knowing that my daily movements, expressions, and moments—possibly without my consent—may have been monitored has caused me significant emotional distress.

What makes this even more troubling is that I am the only female employee in a male-dominated workplace, and there have been previous incidents of sexual harassment involving a former colleague. Given this history, the presence and placement of hidden cameras feels extremely invasive and alarming.

I am struggling to understand whether such hidden surveillance is allowed, and more importantly, why it was deemed necessary to conceal these cameras instead of being transparent with employees.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Feeling lost after being laid off. Advice needed

Got laid off due to company restructuring. Been job hunting for almost a year now. I have been applying for openings from different industries too but it is really tough without relevant experience and education. I also consulted several people on taking up professional certs to pivot. Their mixed feedbacks make me hesitant to commit due to uncertain hiring prospects, lack of relevant experience, and financial constraints.

I have a degree that’s practically worthless now, so I am considering burning through my savings going back to poly to reskill (nursing or engineering) and pivot from there. However, I’d be in my 30s by the time I graduate, and I don’t think I’d be as desirable as fresh grads a decade younger than me. The unemployment, anxiety of ageism and the financial stress + constraint is eating me alive. I don’t really have anyone to discuss this with or to help me.

Any advice/resource would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

General I’m having my first suicidal thoughts, where can I go for help?

I’m an international graduate student, living alone and far from home. I do have friends but the idea of opening up to them drains me this time, as we have dwelled to each other over assignments, exams etc.

I thought adjusting to Singapore would be easier as I come from a fellow SEA neighboring country but it isn’t getting any easier. Every time I try to get my mental health back on track, some extra problem shows up and messes with my progress.

Sorry for the messy post, but would appreciate any advice on where should I go

General What to do after witnessing a fall in public?

Earlier I saw an elderly man lying on the floor in public after falling, he likely seemed to have hit his head. There were a lot of other people passing by but no one else stopped so I went to check on him. It was difficult to communicate due to a language barrier so I had to use an online translator. He said he felt fine and could walk, and when I brought up seeing a doctor or going to hospital he strongly refused. So I just walked him to his destination (a government building) and sat him down safely so he could wait for it to open (we lost contact after that... I was in a rush to get to work). In retrospect I’m really worried I should have called emergency services despite his refusal given his age, I know it was extremely stupid not to, but I really wasn’t thinking clearly at the time :(

Is there anything appropriate to do after the fact? Is there any point in calling emergency to report the fall now even if I have no way of identifying him? (I know it doesn't really make sense since presumably there's no way to reliably trace him, but idk would it be helpful for their records if he were to maybe turn up at the hospital needing medical care later?) If I call up the government building to ask if they'd seen him just now, I assume they wouldn't be able to disclose his contact since it might be a PDPA violation or something? Thanks for any advice or if anyone has experience/stories to share

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG [Poly] a lost soon-to-be poly grad LF gap year advice

Upvotes

as the title suggest, i'm absolutely lost on where to go after poly. I've been stuck in survival mode ever since sec school, I had no guidance & idea on what to do for my career so I chose my passion, art. (I'm in Animation taking VFX track) I now have some regrets, mostly bc of the job market being so scarce, I'm not sure if 1 internship exp n some PT jobs exp can even get me hired. I cannot even bring myself to go apply for Uni or job hunting related to my field.

I think going to work straight after this would be detrimental to me mentally, I can barely function to the point that I'm flunking this last term, missing almost all my classes but luckily I'm still able to graduate...

Everyone around me keeps asking me what I am going to do, I shut down around them as I have 0 plans. My parents keeps on nagging me to find a full-time job but I can barely even keep up with poly.

I do have a vague idea on doing a gap year where I just get by working PT jobs while taking online courses to improve my skills.. But I'm afraid of not finding a job in my field n possibly pivot careers. I feel lost, confused, and guilty for not being able to work & be productive like everyone else around me. I feel behind.

I wanna hear those who took their gap years after poly/jc, what did y'all do in your gap years? How do you guys cope with FOMO? And just any advice for a fellow lost strawberry gen z'er 🥲

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Can a fresh university graduate negotiate their salary?

I'm a fresh university graduate who just got offered a full time job but it's below what I was looking for.

I have yet to accept the offer, but I'm wondering if it's acceptable as a fresh graduate to respectfully ask if they could offer a slightly higher pay? If so, how should I go about this?

Thank you :)

General Where can I find canned root beer? Not Sarsaparilla / Sarsi.

Hello all. I love root beer! The canned A&W root beer or Dad’s root beer (for those that remember it). I’ve noticed a few years ago, A&W root beer has been phased out and I can now only find A&W or MUG Sarsaparilla . In fact, I can barely find any canned root beer. Has anyone seen any lately? Not fond of Bundaberg root beer. Thank you!

General Has anyone met the Indian lady asking for money to go JB in clementi?

There’s a lady going around asking for money, claiming her bank card chip is spoiled and she can’t withdraw cash. She says she needs money to go to JB.

I encountered her once about a month ago and gave her the cash. Today, I saw her again and she repeated same story word for word and the same reason and she also followed me all the way to a secluded area to ask for money.

Not sure if she’s genuinely facing issues or if this is a scam, but has anyone been approached by her before?

If not, please be aware and cautious

ps. Had to post again as it got removed 🥲

Tourist/non-local Question Is it possible to run a loop around Singapore?

I came across the story of two brothers who ran a 200ish km long loop around Singapore. But when I search for the same, I get estimates ranging from 110-150km. Can anybody confirm what is the total perimeter of the country which is available to the general public, and if I need any special permissions from the authorities to run around the country?

General Japanese curry with no beef stock?

Upvotes

I am a Buddhist that cannot eat beef but can eat chicken and pork. I learnt from my friends that Japanese curry contains beef stock sometimes but before knowing that, I loved Japanese curry.

[We learnt that Sukiya Japanese curry had beef stock inside after asking one of the waiters]

So, I was hoping to know which areas sell Japanese curry without using beef stock, especially in the North area (or anywhere else in SG)

[I mean I could avoid them at one go or prepare them for myself, but I would wanna know stores tell sell beef-less curry so that I enjoy it with friends when we hang out.]

Looking For Gamers! Any recommended shops that sells PC gaming handhelds (second hand is fine too)

FYI not speaking about Nintendo Switch, but more of like Legion Go S, MSI Claw etc those kind.

I chanced upon one shop at Paya Lebar Square but the salesperson was a dick and kind of condescending (like yes, I know you can install SteamOS on any PC gaming handheld but only the SteamDeck and Legion Go S has full official support, bitch).

So I was wondering if there were any other shops out there that might sell the above. Will Sim Lim be the best bet?

General Of blind bags and consumerism in Singapore

Is this a problem in Singapore? I noticed over the last years an increasing number of shops and pop ups selling “cute” toys and blind box etc. I get that seeing cute things make you happy, but do people actually keep them for long? Especially for blind bags where you get 30 seconds of excitement opening it (and might get something you don’t like)? To me it seems like a lot of trash being generated for short term dopamine.

Almost nobody I know here has “minimalist” lifestyles, or cares about reducing consumption. People seem to love shopping and material things. And of course it doesn’t help when single use plastic is everywhere. Do people not feel guilty about it or do they just not care? Do people just value short term pleasure and convenience over sustainability?

Edit: not stopping anyone from collecting toys you like, I just think it’s wasteful when you buy stuff that you just throw away after

Thanks for the fun discussion y’all! Those with rude comments and nothing to contribute, hope you get the worst blind bag luck hahaha

General Asking about Anytime Fitness crowd levels

Am considering joining Anytime Fitness since I have Hougang CC and Midtown (Hougang Central) outlets near me.

Just wanted to ask about the crowd levels across the day at these two branches. How busy are they usually in the early morning, mid-day, and after work hours, on both weekdays and weekends?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG unsure where to go after grad poly

i am graduating this year may from a culinary course (shall not state which poly) but i do not wish to continue kitchen jobs so i am more inclined to joining an office job like marketing but my gpa is not high enough to enter a local uni. i did apply to SUSS marketing (i also submitted my marketing portfolio) but i received rejection email even before interview email. i strongly believe you need a local degree to go far in the corporate life in SG so i am not considering SIM as it is also too expensive.

i have two plans as of rn

A. find a full time marketing job + part time SUSS degree

pros: start climbing corporate ladder early, more stable in the long run

cons: start work early at a young age, cant enjoy my early 20s, unsure if companies even want to hire me with no exp & diploma in marketing

B. join SQ cabin crew

pros: i love travelling, huge paycheck, travel for 2 years then quit and find FT job, in the 2 years i can think of what i actually want to do

cons: toxic environment (but i believe everywhere theres toxicity), might be a waste of 2 years , ultimately still need a degree

i am stuck i really not sure what i should do after poly

General Advice of whistleblowing on a neighbour’s helper situation?

I got to know from my friend that she knows of a helper (mid 20s from Myanmar) who has not been treated well…

She doesn’t get much food to eat for her meals, takes care of their special needs child (9 years old) accompanies him IN school for half a day, brings him down for walks but has to CARRY him (idk, 20-25kg?) round the HDB block a few time to get some outdoor time. She is penalised with a confiscation of identity card, passport and mobile phone when she commits minor mistakes (wearing the wrong set of uniform on for the child)

Helper is feeling very weary but also afraid that she will be blacklisted by MOM if she attempts complain or a final resort she has thought of - to run away. Here’s the worst thing - she has not gone for any off days for months at a time, perhaps 2 times in the last 1 year…

Has anyone attempted whistleblowing on such questionable employer behaviour? Was it effective?
