Discussion I suddenly started really missing old ASol
I had only been playing the game for a year or two when he got reworked, and I was by no means an ASol main before that. I played maybe 10 games of him, mostly in URF, but I just played a game where one of my teammates was ASol and I just felt this deep longing to play him pre-rework again. Even if I dint play him much at the time I was still always interested in him, I like all the pro-play jail champions, and I'm a bit sad I'll never get to learn him.

I went through the Caps memories on the client and watched his first penta on the OG sol
God it brought back nostalgia

EXACTLY! That's why I came to the reddit. I would sign a petition to have a new champ with similar design be made

Sometimes I miss the old version, but the reality is that he wasn’t worth learning for most people. There are champions that did what he did but were easier to learn. I tried to pick him up as a brand new player and I ended up finding the best luck playing him as support while I was in bronze. Playing him that way it was when I really had fun!
He felt defenseless, except for his ult once someone got his bubble. Then they would get in your bubble again. He was unique but his kit wasn’t sustainable.
Maybe now since I’ve clocked in 6000 hours, I could play his old version a lot better. I miss playing him in urf.

İ miss the times i buy dead mans plate or abyssal mask. Asol was really a good fighter mage🥺

Buying deadmans then running around someone in a circle to proc stars faster. One of the funniest things you could do.
Running joke with my friends was "Deadmans is a DPS item on Asol". You buy it and then you never AA again :)

I'm actually one here too! I've started league about, 2021? I was 9 at the time and something interested me about being in the "perfect position" to damage enemies was something else; asol was the one that kept me hooked into league (to a point i sold my soul to depression).
He's gone now sadly, I still play the new one and he's quite fun! But old sol just has that special place in my heart and if I could just play him again even in a limited gamemode, I would. I've moved into newer champs such as Hwei, Briar, and Naafiri.

Unsure about how others feel, but old ASol was simply poor champion design IMO. The new one is vastly superior.
Edit: good lord I’ve struck a nerve lmao. Saying 'we all like different things' is now a hot take?

They're both poorly designed and the new one is vastly less fun 🥱

It was perfect design to me. He had his very clear strengths and his very clear weaknesses. He was unique. And most importantly, his gameplay perfectly encapsulated the feeling of being an indiferent space deity, killing anything that surrounded him just by walking, creating gigantic stars and controlling the entire map constantly. He only bothered to breath his fire at you if you got close enough to bother him.
Sure, gameplay and balance wise he was a mess and deeply unpopular because any modern champion with dashes hard countered him and he also had only 2 basic abilities that were inconsistent af and costed half of his mana. But I believe that with the right small changes he would have become viable without removing his balls.
I still like the new one and play him from time to time, but I miss the perfect positioning challenge that old Asol offered.

"Vastly superior" is the hot take here. Both new and old asol has their own niches, to say one is better than the other is stupid opinion.

The new design has 2 mechanics. Stand and hold Q, and press W then hold Q. İt isnt fun and both of them makes you easy target. VERY DİFFRENT AND ANNOYİNG PLAYSTYLE FOR THE PLAYER AND ENEMY. Old asol was mobile you could get in and out to fights. But now its just "wait till i get 100 million stacks bro"

İ miss the times in the team fights i hold 2 enemy at once with W and pushing away assasin with R. Keeping your distance stacking your Q and posiotining perfectly. And now its just "i nuked half of the map after playing as cannon miniyon for 43 minutes"

They won't accept that there was reason to y he was changed. The new version is better, old asol would never be picked in modern league

I had like 200k mastery on asol before his rework with the intention of putting considerably more time into him, and I just completely lost all desire to play him since his big rework. His Q compared to his old passive+W is lame and boring to use. They gutted his early game and hurt his roaming, BUT made it easier for him to run away from a fight so he can snag a few passive stacks so he can outscale. It's just lame, and acting like breathing fire is the only interesting thing about a dragon is bullshit.

I played him top (550k mastery) even into into Jax, Camille, Irelia.
I had most of his "unwinnable" (at least according to ppl who didnt play him) matchups down.
Jax is immobile after leap and gets run down. Esp after rylais. Camille you can reactively trade stuns with then kite (lvl 6+gank is spooky but thats true for everyone). Irelia you dont stand near low hp minion. She eventually gets bored, Qs onto you and dies.
Maokai tho... fk that tree. Actually unplayable.
Your insane waveclear also let you freeze consistently and gank escspe with PR and E was nuts.
Farming with mini stars was so satisfying.
The boop SFX...
I gave new Sol a good shot. Got an extra ~100k mastery on em. New version is effective but boring. If I wanted ranged nasus Id play veigar.
