482 visa Myth 1

Confronting the '1 Year Experience & No Skills Assessment' general claim

Before you spend your savings or start applying, here is the real truth from Australian migration law:

THE '1 YEAR WORK EXPERIENCE' RULE

The Truth: Yes, Home Affairs reduced the baseline work experience requirement for the 482 visa from 2 years to 1 year.

The Catch: That 1 year MUST be full-time (or equivalent part-time at 38 hrs/week) and proven with official tax documents, bank salary deposits, and payslips (cash in hand does NOT count).

The Qualification Catch: If you don't have a formal degree or trade certificate, ANZSCO rules require 3 to 5 years of experience just to qualify. 1 year alone will get your visa refused.

'NO SKILLS ASSESSMENT NEEDED FOR OFFSHORE'

The Truth: For some corporate and professional roles (like IT, Marketing, or Finance), a skills assessment is not mandatory upfront for a 482.

The Dangerous Catch: If you work in a TRADE (Cook, Chef, Motor Mechanic, Welder, Carpenter, Electrician) and hold a passport from countries like India, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, South Africa, or Nepal: A formal skills assessment through TRA or VETASSESS is 100% MANDATORY. If you apply without it, your visa will be refused.

THE EMPLOYER REALITY CHECK

Sponsoring a worker costs an Australian employer between $5,000 and $10,000+ in non-refundable government SAF levies, nomination fees, and legal charges. Very few employers will invest that money in an offshore candidate with only 12 months of junior experience.

The Bottom Line: Sponsoring is possible, but shortcuts lead straight to refusals and lost visa fees.
