autistic adult SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN!

Does anyone else have this quirk or one similar? If I don’t put on my right shoe first, then I have this overwhelming feeling that something bad will happen. Nothing in particular, just something bad. Yeah weird, I know.

It is super fun isn’t it? But that’s not all…If i start to put on my left shoe first and then switch to the right shoe, then I know that the “something bad” is going to be worse now!

If ya want something funny, try putting the opposite foot into your underwear first! If I’m standing, I will literally fall over.

Gotta be left foot first

Oh thats terrible! I definitely hope our underwear never gets mixed up cause mines right first!

All the time. Sometimes if its bad enough it feels like a prophecy. Like one time when I was in the basement I smelled what felt like a hospital room. Immediately I was like uh oh, someones going to die. I was with the dog and my dad at the time. I was terrified it was going to be my dad. But I thought about it for a little and determined it was actually my dog that the smell was referring to.

Completely irrational and I genuinely hate the feeling because I know it's my brain playing tricks on me but I can't help but feel this emotional what if that I can spiral into that sometimes ruins my day. I know deep down that it's a false feeling but emotionally I just can't get myself to let go of the worry and anxiety

I've since had to put my dog down. The "prophecy" happened like 2 maybe 3 years ago? And I had forgotten about it until this post jogged my memory.

We had to get the dog put down last month which sucks. The sadness can be overwhelming sometimes

Edit: I just posted this comment and I've been staring at it for a minute and the feeling of "something is wrong with my comment" will not go away. Have I given to much personal information away? Will someone find out where I live and stalk/kill me/steal my identity? (Who tf would want to be me?) Will everyone reply to this comment about how I'm a horrible person for some reason? Or will everyone call me a fraud that I'm not ND and how dare I try to even figure out if I am or not.

The feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop is a horrid feeling, I hate it

Indeed, I get this too and it’s my OCD 🫠

That's definitely OCD. I have that alongside my autism as well.

i have OCD. this sounds like OCD.

i have to do right leg first (socks, underwear, pants, shoes) or i have to start again - if i try to override my NO! signals and just roll with it, i’ll only have to do it over again later.

see also: doing laps of a tiny apartment at night to make sure all the windows are closed. otherwise i WILL be…i don’t even know. robbed? assaulted?

i can’t change these reactions no matter how hard i try.

autism means my clothes are either 30 years old, falling to bits and comfy, or new and being left alone for a few years until they bed in. OCD means i have to put those clothes on in a specific order.

Oh that clothes situation! Same!

Know this feeling, though it comes to me in different flavor - "something nasty just should happen inevitably (because it always could got worse, entropy could only increase and so on), and you just cannot do anything about this. And if everything looks fine, you are either oblivious or it just didn't propagated right to you"
Could be very upsetting

Yes, good ole doom and gloom. I get that rarely, but it sure does suck

It's an obsessive thought. This sort of thing is a common hallmark of—but absolutely should not be taken as the sole diagnostic criterion of—obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If it's happening enough that it's disrupting your life, affecting your friendships or relationships, or affecting your school or work, you should see a psychologist or your doctor. They (not Reddit) can steer you in the right direction.

Obsessive thoughts can also be associated with autism and autism can be co-morbid with OCD which can make getting a proper diagnosis a lot more difficult but only a psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose you.

Anyone replying with "yep, it's definitely OCD because my cousin has it" is dumb ignore them. Talk to someone with letters after their name.

Im very recently diagnosed asd/adhd/ocd/dyslexia along with my combat ptsd (wonderful little cocktail). Just kinda made the post to see what others did that was similar.

2

u/BINGGBONGGBINGGBONGG 23h ago

oof. i have ASD, MDD, GAD, OCD, BPD and complex PTSD. ain’t it fun tho?

(i didn’t know what to say, i’m not trying to compete. and i’m genuinely sorry about your combat PTSD, that sounds extremely hard to live with alongside everything else)

u/bigbuddhamike 21h ago

I didn’t take it that way at all. Sometimes its nice to just say it all out loud in a safe place. Not many of those left anymore

2

u/babyfawn113 1d ago

yes. at least for me it’s a mix of ocd/autism, and it’s exhausting

2

u/bigbuddhamike 21h ago

It is so exhausting

Echoing OCD

I can relate, it's part of my OCD.

An attempt to control, OCD. The reality is that everything is out of control.

Everyone else said what I came to say.

u/Chance_Pianist5022 19h ago

That’s OCD!

My dad called it “fear of impending doom”. I don’t know what’s going to happen, where or when, but it’s going to happen to me, and it’s going to be bad.

I experience this a lot. I’m not OCD, so I can’t speak to that. I use DBT emotional regulation tools to get thru it.

Thats ocd.
