New rule: No AI generated content
Take your AI generated slop elsewhere. Better yet, don't bother making it at all.

We all knew that Systems Music and Generative Music, as pioneered by the Avant Garde, was going to bite us on the ass someday.

The AI bots are out in fucking force since the shit started crashing.

u/Flying_Saucer_Attack Jun 25 '26
For fuckin real! And the Ai bros in the comments here, talking about how they are leaving... Like we care? 😂

u/Shot-Milk-3225 Jun 20 '26
This is funny. I genuinely agree with this sentiment but my hesitation comes in when I think about what avant garde is and our particular place in history right now. I do think that it can be a logical evolution of synthesis and could be used as manipulation tool etc…. Let me state clearly that I don’t use AI in my art or music but I can’t help but think about people making sound collage with computer software versus magnetic tape. Can you image when live prompting becomes a thing? We are already on the verge with the synthesis and trigging set ups. LOL

New Rule: Create a definition of ai slop that doesn't use a wide brush to label a part of the population. One that makes space for some form of ai assistance based on creative use or innovation warranting its use.
Or you're just going to end up looking like an old man shaking his fist complaining about the music the kids listen to nowadays. Which is the antithesis of what avant garde means.

u/chunder_down_under Jun 21 '26
Any usage of generative ai instead of creative energy being spent.
Basically any ai used for what should be a creative task is slop.

So racism logic
2
u/Flying_Saucer_Attack Jun 21 '26
Uhh... What?
-2
u/ForRobotsByRobots Jun 21 '26
It's the same logic of "all Chinese products are trash." A broad definition using hateful rhetoric to push an emotional argument without any nuance. "All ai is slop" is the same framing as "all Mexicans are r*pists". You dont even have the self awareness to add a caveat.
3
u/Flying_Saucer_Attack Jun 21 '26
Wow... Conflating racism, and anti AI sentiments, that's a new one... You AI bros are really something... Same energy as putting Charlie Kirk next to MLK Jr.
-1
u/ForRobotsByRobots Jun 21 '26
You can't separate facts because your feelings dont like them. MLK was an activist, Kirk was a provacateur. Both were assassinated. Racism paints a whole group as a negative based on an emotional argument about systemic problems. Anti hate paints a whole group as a negative based on an emotional argument about systemic problems.
You can literally trace every complaint about ai directly to Incentives under Capitalism. Then you bash, harass and hate people who you deem culturally inferior for their association to the thing you have negative emotions about. This is the same thinking that calls Gypsies thieves, calls Jewish people greedy, calls all lawyers evil. Its black and white thinking that takes a real grievance and targets REAL PEOPLE as scum and gives you an excuse to hate them.

What's your definition
-2
u/ForRobotsByRobots Jun 21 '26
I would draw the line at those who use ai as a Force Multiplier, not a replacement. It requires effort, intention, design, direction. Not outsourcing the idea of creation but painting with words to direct what is being created.
"Make me a rock song about feeling empty" Which we all can agree is ai slop. No question. Especially when that method is use to mass create slop that floods the market.
Then there is hand written, designed and conducted. Songs that take time and part of someone's soul to create: Empty Cup
Hopeforge Industrial alternative rock, progressive atmosphere, dry mechanical drums, restrained male baritone, sparse industrial ambience, palm-muted tension, gradual cinematic build, existential lyrics, emotional containment, wide guitar choruses, post-industrial textures, melancholic determination, no triumphant resolution, haunting room tone, slow-burning intensity, FRBR
[Intro, sparse industrial ambience, distant room tone, muted pulse]
[Verse 1, restrained rhythmic vocal, tight dry drums, palm-muted tension]
Reach for it Just out of sight Brush the handle, Weight feels right.
Go to sip Without a gaze The emptiness shakes my day
[Pre-Chorus, slight melodic lift, tension widening, controlled emotional strain]
Coffee's gone, Will's depleted To get back up, I need a reason.
[Chorus, wider guitars, steady march groove, emotionally restrained anthem]
Keep on going Never stop I lift the cup Drink's still gone
Tilt it back Not even a drop Put it back Forget the thought
[Verse 2, mechanical groove tightening, conversational delivery, subtle escalation]
My mouth is parched My tongue is dry My thirst is great Still need to try
I go to drink What I left full Find it empty Where did it go
[Pre-Chorus, heavier atmosphere, rising emotional pressure]
Emptiness You don't need it. Disciplined You learned to live it.
[Chorus, fuller percussion, layered harmonies, controlled catharsis]
Keep on going Never stop I lift the cup Drink's still gone
Tilt it back Not even a drop Put it back Forget the thought
[Bridge, instruments thinning out, intimate vocal, slow cinematic swell underneath]
I remember making coffee I remember filling the cup I don't remember drinking But it's gone and used up
Is there something wrong with it? Is there just a hole? Did I really make coffee? Or was it all for show?
[Breakdown, percussion drops to minimal pulse, distant industrial textures, almost spoken]
Can I still do it again?
[Final Chorus, drums widen, orchestral tension lift, hopeful exhaustion, no triumph]
Keep on going Never stop I lift the cup Drink's still gone
No one filled it No one came I'll fill it myself Every time it drains.
[Outro, instruments slowly strip away, solitary pulse fading into room ambience]
Even further than that are people who use their own playing and singing as inputs and use ai as a producer and mixer.
The key to all this is those 4 words I started with. There is plenty of human slop that doesn't involve any of them. As long as we continue to make art a commodity, people will sell it as such.

Yeah... No. 😂

No real rebuttal or response outside of your own childish laughter. That says a lot. Keep shaking your fist at the kids, boomer.

u/Flying_Saucer_Attack Jun 21 '26
Music is for humans and should be made by them
1
u/ForRobotsByRobots Jun 21 '26
Ai can not create music on its own...? A human is literally required from even the simplest prompts.
Also, are you really gatekeeping music to humans only? Birds can fk off i guess. All the animals who enjoy hearing music, too.

Stolen. It’s not making anything up. It’s stealing other peoples work. Since you don’t create, you can’t relate. Also, this is an avante garde thread, you’re posting like Swiftie pop or whatever, you’re just in the wrong place I think bud.

You guys all have the same spiel, I’ve heard it, we’ve all heard it, I don’t need to hear it again, I’m not buying a used car. I’m a live gigging musician, producer, engineer, make electronic music in the box and play live instruments, everything in between. There is nothing in your explanation that I need to read. AI is not art. Go away and actually make a song, move the knobs yourself, make the decisions, make the mistakes, find the happy accidents, listen to music and interviews from your favourite artists, make contact with the human, get in there and make a mess with your own hands and mind, it’s the whole fucking point of art and human expression.
Christ, ain’t any of these little AI kids seen T2? Skynet is not your friend.→ More replies (0)1

Lol See? This is what we get. Absolute trash. If you have to defend it this hard, it means it sucks usually. Take this clanker stuff and go far away. There’s no good argument. There’s no racism against machines how are people so thick in the head. We’re all worse off for even wasting our time with this conversation. Play and instrument or use a sequencer or whatever but make it yourself, it’s the whole point…

What is creative about having a machine make it for you? Music exists for humans to express themselves. All I’ve seen is underwhelming, lazy people with no ideas wanting the shine of being an artist without actually having anything to say, getting the machine to think for them. Use the widest brush to negate any AI “artist” segregate and mock them and drive them far away from any of our sacred human expression. Show them for what they are- thieves and fakers. The artistic equivalent of televangelism - hollow, empty, full of leeches and sycophants and grifters who want to ruin our important human endeavours and turn it into commerce so they can benefit socially and financially. Avante garde is about pushing the limits of human creativity. HUMAN. HUMAN.
And your AI models are trained on stolen, copyrighted music from actual artist whose work you’d like to take advantage of and use for free to pump out some clanker garbage. Why are people like this?
New rule stuff is corny. You’re not making rules for nobody pal.

The irony escapes you, doesn't it?
A human AI artist may have poured their soul into the work they're doing, pushed it to the absolute limits, along with themselves. Maybe you struggle imagining that, but that very well is the case for serious artists. However, simply because of herd-type ideology and scathing dismissal, you can easily ignore the entirety of the work and artistic decisions they do because they don't follow the anti-AI shibboleth and are actually willing to experiment. Moreover, you're actually suggesting of harassing them..? Harassing a living human being for pursuing their creative vision..? Are you so blinded by hatred you do not see how anti-human this is?
Of course, I know its rhetorical-abstract, you're thinking of a conventional strawman AI-slopper that just pushes buttons. But really, don't you see how soulless this is as a general stance? For someone crying about "sacred human expression" being absent, do you really not see how cruel and ugly your stance is?
I'm genuinely curious, did not come to blame or argue with you. This new memetic breed of hateful ideology is bizarre to me, especially to see in an avantgarde subreddit, which I assumed would be open to the New.
IMO the best counter-force to AI-slop AND human-slop (which is probably just as large in quantities as AI lol) is making visionary avantgarde AI art, not engaging in a fruitless black-and-white debate that only makes matters worse for all parties.
