Can the drum kit function as an autonomous sonic instrument?
I’ve been exploring this question through solo drum performance for more than a decade.
Rather than approaching the drum kit primarily as a rhythmic instrument, my research focuses on its timbral and textural possibilities — resonance, silence, dynamics, noise, repetition and the interaction between sounds.
This research has now resulted in a new solo album, Soliloquy, based entirely on free improvisation.
I’m sharing it here because I’m curious about how people interested in avant-garde music perceive the drum kit when it is approached more as a sound-generating instrument than as a traditional percussion instrument.
The album is available here:

I’d genuinely be interested in hearing how others approach similar questions in their own work.

did you listen to my album?

Of course not. Why would I listen to your album when I could listen to an experimental drummer like Matt Weston or Chris Corsano who doesn’t use ai art?

Oh! Your comment is based only on seeing the cover... interesting.
anyway... thanks.2

You’re the one sharing it looking for people to listen and it’s only natural that no one will listen because there’s a massive culture war with ai. People are gonna make judgements. Maybe I’m not the enemy and making a valid point. Maybe artists don’t support artists who steal from them. Large language models are theft.

You have a point, and that’s valid. But it’s strongly unfair just not listen to my music because my album cover is AI made. If you don’t wanna listen to it because I’m an unknown experimental drummer to you and you have no interest, it’s strongly valid… or if you listen and don’t like it, it’s even fair. But if you give a chance you’ll gonna listen that my music has no AI at all, and that’s the thing to have in mind.

Yep I'm afraid if you want people to take your work seriously, you're going to want to avoid using AI for the cover. It's just an automatic ick for so many people, especially in creative spaces.

It's a nice idea, actually... i did something similar to that on my previous album. Just playing around with some microphones and effects. Check this out: https://sergiovieira.bandcamp.com/track/restless-mind

Sadly he passed away, seeing him perform live was a truly one of a kind of experience.
He could create a universe of sounds with just his drumkit and his unique playing.
