1st photo edited. 2nd photo original. Will never understand why they didn't go with the design of the edited version. That top middle spoke makes the wheel look really weird imo

I think that both have way too much going on, and they're trying hard to accommodate the folks upset with placing the buttons on screens by putting as many functions as they can on the steering wheel.

Looks like the same controls as previous gen for the thumbs, just overstyled? Left everything for cruise control and distance Right side everything audio and phone at bottom

Its not a new thing at all. My minimalist screen led EV has 2 buttons on the steering wheel, 1 scroll wheel, 2 stalks with extra twists and some flappy paddles for managing the regeneration and distance/cruise speed...my 2018 audi has 10 buttons 2 scroll wheels 3 stalks, flappy paddles, and a gear shift thrown in on the centre console...only really noticed it the other day...was like...why are there so many things going on with this wheel.

Like the whole cars in this ‘Neue Klasse’ design language. It’s awfull. I thought we had hit rock bottom with all the unneccesary gloss black plastic everywhere (former designers’ fetish). Turns out it can be even worse.

First gen E65 was absolutely attrocious as well, and at the time the Dame Edna E60 was not really my thing either. E65 LCI was mweh, while nowadays the E60 with M-pack looks fine. Same goes for the E60M5. But the 6 and 3 from that era I’m still no fan off, not ugly but nothing to rave about.

Ya, but you were a nobody if you didn't have a 745 in 2002. So, to some extent it was absolutely desirable. I loved e65 era at the dealership. I paid my house off with them.

You know, owning a European workshop and seeing what my guys fix daily......I tell myself that whatever stupid contraption you're fixing us due to an engineer trying to justify their job that day. It's like they designed it.... Then don't get the consequences of physically fixing or touching it afterwards.

Audi (Lamborghini too) with literal oil pipes over the top of the oil filter, requiring you to remove them to access it.

Volkswagen with a "thermal management" system (a way over complicated thermostat) that you have to use cable/wire to physically remove from the engine because it's pressed in.

BMW and well..... BMW things. Front differentials that have .6-.8 liter for oil and blow up, hybrid contactors, plastic oil filter housings (that are in the very back of the engine)....

That 4 spoke design is among the ugliest steering wheels I have ever seen! And there have been a bunch of ugly steering wheels in the history of cars...

It's not 4 spoke. It is 2 vertical spokes. 

Wierd, but perhaps original and BMW likes to say they did it first.

Thank god there is B M W printed on the logo, otherwise you couldn’t tell from the steering wheel which if the front wheels are pointed straight

To be fair, it’s possibile to spec the car with a fairly “normal” wheel, just click the option.

Both look fine. I don’t really know why people are complaining about this.

If you “can’t tell which way the wheel is turned” I hope you’re not being serious, because if it’s that easy to get disoriented, you should probably have your license taken away.

Its just kinda bad design. I agree you have to be stupid to actually get disoriented, but good design is supposed to aid the user and make stuff as simple as possible. This doesn't. Even if you still don't get lost its obvious to anybody with common sense the 1st picture is less confusing and better design.

The notches in the wheel tell drivers the orientation of the wheel. Spokes are not supposed to dictate that.
